Four Step Passage Study Step 1 - OBSERVATION - What do I see? 1. Read slowly and record observations. 2. Ask questions... Who? What? When? Where? Why? How? 3. Six things to look for What things are emphasized? What things are repeated? What things are related? What things are alike? What things are unlike? What things are true to life? 4. Mark and define key words 5. Re-read passage and summarize observations Step 2 - INTERPRETATION - What does it mean? 1. Context What is happening at the time, in the culture, in history? How does the verse relate to surrounding verses? 2. Cross-reference How does this relate to other verses/passages in the Bible? Write these cross-references down! How do they help you understand what you are studying? 3. Use outside help for difficulties or additional insight. Strong's Concordance Bible Dictionary Commentary Step 3 - MEDITATION - What am I to consider? How can I apply this? Why haven't I applied this better in the past? If were to apply this, what changes would it require in my attitudes? Behaviour? What aspect of God's character requires that I apply this truth to my life? What would be the long-term effects of applying this truth to my life? What would be the long-term effects if I didn't apply this truth to my life? Think of an example when Jesus applied this truth. Who do I know who applies this truth consistently? What do I need to trust God to do regarding the application of this to my life? What is my part in applying this truth? Step 4 - APPLICATION - How does it work? From what you have learned, begin praying an application into your life. Look for principles, general truths that apply to a wide spectrum of life. Be SPECIFIC in applying what you have learned. S What Sin is there to repent of? P What Promise can you claim and act on? E What Example is there to follow? C What Command is there to obey? I What Ideas are there for prayer? F Did you Find a verse to memorize? I What Information can strengthen your faith? C What Condition or Challenge is there to face? Discuss with others the truth you learned. III. Summarize your Study Title Captures the essence of the passage. Theme Write one sentence that communicates the main. Key Verse Choose a verse that communicates the theme. Outline Organize your thoughts to help you remember. Questions Make a list of questions that surfaced in your study.
