a message from the CEO
For more than 20 years, the Hospitality Training Association Inc. (HTA) has been helping turn dreams of a career in tourism and hospitality into reality. Through our innovative and comprehensive courses we have helped our students become successful chefs, restaurateurs, waiters and hotel managers. So, it is with much pride and pleasure that we present HTA’s course options for 2008/2009. A range of exciting courses covering certificates and diplomas that will prepare and qualify you for advancement in your chosen field of endeavour. Statistics show that tourism and hospitality are among the fastest growing industries in the world. Today, we are all part of one giant global marketplace. A qualification in hospitality offers opportunities to advance your career in areas as diverse as resorts, cruising, casinos, the airline industry and 5-star multi-national hotels or boutique operations. Just as the students who attend HTA are drawn from every corner of the globe, so can you gain the chance to work in many different countries around the world. The size and scope of employment opportunities in tourism and hospitality is endless. Over 1.3 million people are employed in Australia’s hospitality and tourism industries. The total spend in Australian tourism
alone in 2005/2006 increased from $73 billion in 2004/2005 to $80.7 billion. In terms of accommodation that equates to over 14 million room nights. This year more than 500 million arrivals will be recorded at the top tourist destinations around the world. By 2010 there will be over 50 million outbound Chinese tourists. Staggering figures indeed, but what an opportunity for the well-prepared graduate. And there are none better equipped to reap the benefits of this growth explosion than the thousands of students who pass through HTA’s doors each year. Our established links to the tourism and hospitality industry are the foundation of our college. We have consistently delivered world-class training and genuine opportunities for career advancement, within high profile organisations, for our students. Whether you are taking your first tentative step or you are ready to make that quantum leap to the next stage of your career, HTA can help lay the exciting world of hospitality and tourism at your feet.

overview of HTA
“ HTA’s connections ensured I got paid industry experience at three 5 star hotels as part of my qualification.”
Patrice Bowen Diploma of Hospitality Management
No other college can lay claim to having the level of support and endorsement from Queensland’s five peak tourism and hospitality industry bodies as HTA enjoys:

covers the practical side through on-the-job experience. Each semester, all students undertake a period of paid industry placement relevant to that semester’s subjects – making HTA’s courses not only relevant and practical but very much ‘hands-on’ as well. As Queensland’s leading tourism and hospitality recruitment and employment specialists, HTA plays a critical part in the future well-being of the hospitality industry. We will continue to train and provide the calibre of people needed to sustain industry growth and development. James Visser, President of HTA and Chief Executive of Restaurant & Catering Queensland, sees tourism and hospitality as a major growth industry that will continue to expand rapidly. This is one of the key reasons why HTA’s future is assured:
Hotel, Motel & Accommodation Association Clubs Queensland Restaurant & Catering Queensland Liquor, Hospitality & Miscellaneous Union Queensland Hotels Association
These five associations formed HTA more than 20 years ago and are the driving force behind tourism and hospitality in Queensland. Through their involvement, HTA graduates gain an edge over competitors in terms of practical knowledge, experience and industry placement. A not-for-profit organisation, HTA has evolved into one of Australia’s most respected and successful training providers and has been responsible for the career advancement of many thousands of young people worldwide. Today, HTA has the respect of the Australian government, the hospitality industry and other bodies because of its professionalism, its nationally and internationally recognised short courses, diplomas and certificate qualifications plus its ongoing commitment to recruitment, employment and training. Our college not only provides a solid grounding in the theoretical aspects of a career in hospitality, it also 2
“In its 25-year history, HTA has achieved and contributed much to the industry it supports. I am proud of the leadership role the college has played in supporting the growth of tourism and hospitality through training and the provision of qualified people to fuel that growth. With no sign of the upward trend in worldwide tourism numbers diminishing, I see HTA as remaining a vital component in the continuing success of tourism in this country and very much in the industry spotlight.”
James Visser – CEO , RCQ
Through the provision of short courses, certificate and diploma qualifications, HTA offers training in all facets of tourism and hospitality that is recognised both nationally and internationally. Currently over 1.3 million people are employed in hospitality and tourism throughout Australia. Each sector caters to different requirements within the industry. Forecasts predict Australia’s tourism arrival numbers will swell to in excess of 5 million annually, with a projected increase to 7.6 million. Based on forward projections, it is estimated that, over the next few years, up to 300,000 new jobs will be created Australia-wide as a result of the current boom in tourism, which heightens the need for professional training. HTA believes the required level of professionalism in the industry can only be achieved by furnishing candidates with both practical and theoretical skills aimed at enhancing knowledge, self-confidence and self-esteem while still providing ongoing work placement assistance and career development. There can be no doubt that the future of tourism and hospitality throughout the world is an exciting and challenging one. The employment opportunities created will provide a fascinating, rewarding career for students with a qualification from HTA. 3
studying in Australia
“ I love the challenges and opportunities that HTA provides.”
Stephanie Christiansen Certificate III in Commercial Cookery
Australia is a great place to live and study and Brisbane is Australia’s most livable city!
Australia is one of the three most popular study destinations in the world for English-speaking international students. It offers an environment where the standard of living is among the highest in the world, yet with living and tuition expenses that are considerably lower than those of the USA and UK, and is home to people who are warm, friendly and out-going. Australia offers a multicultural society that welcomes international students from all backgrounds. Our lecturers have considerable experience in teaching classes with students from around the world. At HTA, you can make life-long friendships and develop international networks with students from every corner of the globe. HTA’s philosophy is to encourage students to think independently and to be innovative and creative in their approach to studies. This philosophy helps to promote a distinctive culture that produces confident, ambitious graduates equipped to take on exciting new careers in the global market.
WHERE ELSE BUT QUEENSLAND?
If you’re looking to study and pursue a career in tourism and hospitality, you could not pick a safer or better location than Queensland. Australia’s ‘Sunshine State’ is recognised as one of Asia-Pacific’s most popular tourist meccas and is one of Australia’s fastest growing and most vital economies. The hospitality industry is booming around the world and Queensland is helping lead the way with world class hospitality and tourism destinations. With exotic island resorts, world class hotels and theme parks; stylish restaurants and cafes and international sporting and cultural events that are the envy of many, where better than Queensland to receive world class training that will start you on the pathway of a career in tourism and hospitality. BRISBANE – A SOPHISTICATED SUB-TROPICAL PARADISE
The often repeated saying about Brisbane’s weather ‘beautiful one day, perfect the next’ is just one of this sophisticated and modern international city’s obvious lifestyle benefits. A place of festivals, events and a co-mingling of cultures, Brisbane is an ideal environment in which to live and learn. Less than an hour’s drive away you have the sparkling beaches of the Gold and Sunshine Coasts and within the city’s environs world-class sporting arenas, parks, gardens, entertainment venues and hundreds of different activities and events to exhaust even the most active of people. Getting around Brisbane is safe and easy too with ready access to public buses, trains and ferries that offer generous discounted student fares. With its network of bike and walking tracks crisscrossing the city and river, it’s no wonder Brisbane was recently voted by the Economist Intelligence Unit Survey as one of the world’s Top 8 cities to live in, making it the perfect place to study for a career in hospitality.
A HOME AWAY FROM HOME
Living away from home in another country can be quite a daunting prospect. That’s why, in addition to student housing and rental accommodation, HTA has access to a range of excellent homestay placements, close to the college, with friendly, caring families. These homes are recommended by BECAB Homestay Management and usually include a private room with study desk, a shared bathroom, clean linen and towels, breakfast and an evening meal Monday to Friday and all meals on weekends.
Student housing is also available. This can take the form
of apartment blocks or houses dedicated to students and usually includes a fully furnished unit with utilities and telephone connections, some with internet capabilities. Some students also opt to live independently in rental
accommodation. Rents in Brisbane vary depending on
the location, size and facilities available. It is not uncommon for a group of students to share rental accommodation to reduce their living expenses and overheads like gas and electricity. However, compared to Melbourne and Sydney, Brisbane offers a much cheaper student destination without compromising lifestyle.
