ES 410: Spatial Analysis Final Project
         Research Question

Where are the Insider’s Guide attractions
located?
How can we best represent this information?
            Insider’s Guide
• Environmental Science Junior Seminar
  project promoting the Meadville community
  and local economy
• Through highlighting local businesses,
  entertainment, and establishments
• This is an on-going project that will include
a website, and brochures to promote and
  support local attractions
               Techniques

• Locating addresses for the Insider’s Guide

• Geocoding: combines map information with
street addresses in order to locate a point
  uniquely (Class Handout: Geocoding)
               Geocoding
• This is done by entering addresses into
table. Then the information is processed by
the GIS program. Then the GIS maps the
  addresses appropriately.
• Based on the address ranges in each road
segment, the GIS interpolates where the
point should be located on the map.
               Geocoding
• Building an Address Locator
• This locates the zone in which your
points are located, and imports specific
street names and address ranges for that
  zone.
               Geocoding
• Matching Addresses
  Interactively
• This is where you can
  modify the specifics of
  the addresses in order to
  fix unmatched addresses.
               Geocoding
• Aerial Photograph
• Adding aerial photographs over your street
map allows you to actually see buildings
and streets, and better allows you to
  manually place unmatched points.
                Geocoding
• When nothing else
  works
• Drive out to a
  location in order to
  place the address
  correctly on the
  map.
              Map Making
• How to best represent this information?

• Maps are clearly are the best tool for
  representing spatial information. Thematic
maps “show information about any one of
myriad special topics superimposed on a
  base map.” (Campbell, 9)
             Making Maps

• Specific maps were needed for lodging and
dining. These were made for easy insertion
  into a brochure or webpage.
              Map Making
• All Inclusive Map
• This map was designed to show all
attractions within Meadville. This would be
a good map for people unfamiliar with the
  area to use.
• This map works well as a foundation map
for layer additions. New or needed maps
can be easily made from this map.
                Problems
• Address Matching
• Categorizing specific businesses
               The Future
• This map can be used in the future for
specific needs (ex. events mapping), or
directions. Making updates in the attribute
tables for each of the layers will be easy
should new attractions open, or close.
• Hopefully this project can be used by future
  Allegheny students to become more
  involved in their surrounding community.
