The Aggregate Industries guide to LEED Certification
LEED Certification — The Aggregate Industries Guide
Aggregate Industries
Our core business of producing crushed stone and sand and gravel is complemented by downstream operations that produce ready mixed concrete, asphalt and concrete products. In addition, recycling, liquid asphalt, soil remediation and retailing businesses are also included in Aggregate Industries operations. Aggregate Industries operates seven regional construction materials businesses in the United States. These regional businesses participate in all sectors of the construction industry, supplying aggregate-based materials and contracting services to a wide range of projects including large, publicly-financed infrastructure projects and commercial and residential developments. Aggregate Industries is an environmentally responsible producer and supplier of a comprehensive range of construction materials including virgin and recycled construction aggregates, asphalt, ready mixed concrete and precast concrete products.
Aggregate Industries’ commitment to sustainability
Aggregate Industries seeks to optimize the utilization of all raw materials and to increase the use of recycled materials in its products. In this way we can reduce our dependence on virgin materials and so minimize our impact on the environment at the source of their extraction. At Aggregate Industries we believe that the sustainable development of our business is vital to our success. All of our US operations are now certified to the international standard for environmental management systems, known as ISO 14001:2004. An online version of our Sustainability Report can be viewed at www.aggregate.com/sustainability. Aggregate Industries has a number of strategically located operations within each of our seven regional businesses, allowing our customers the ability to minimize transportation to their job sites.
The drive for sustainable construction
To encourage all developers to consider the sustainability of their construction products, the U.S. Green Building Council has introduced the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. This comprises a credit accumulation system to help developers rate how ‘environmentally efficient’ their building projects are. It focuses on a number of criteria including: a) Sustainable Sites (14 possible points) b) Water Efficiency (5 possible points) c) Energy & Atmosphere (17 possible points) d) Materials & Resources (13 possible points) e) Indoor Environmental Quality (15 possible points) f) Innovation & Design Process (5 possible points) Total = 69 Possible Points (based on LEED-NC, version 2.2) By means of a project checklist, those involved in a LEED rating system can allocate points to specific elements of a project, such as the type of construction materials used. The aim of this rating system is to accumulate enough points to reach a certification status, thereby providing an overall environmental sustainability classification rating for a building project. The classification relates to the entire built structure, including the vertical and horizontal infrastructure and footprint comprising car parks, walkways and other elements. G Platinum LEED certification = 52 or more points G Gold LEED certification G LEED certification G Silver LEED certification = 51 – 39 points = 38 – 33 points = 32 – 26 points
Most federal, state and local governments now require new government buildings to achieve LEED certification. Please email LEED@aggregate.com for advice on how Aggregate Industries’ products can help your project gain LEED points or to request a technical data sheet for a specific type of material. Stormwater Design, Quantity Control
Summary of Requirements
If existing imperviousness is <50%, implement a SWMP that prevents the post-development 1.5 year, 24 hour peak discharge rate from exceeding the pre-development 1.5 year, 24-hour peak discharge rate. If existing imperviousness is greater than 50%, implement a SWMP that results in a 25% decrease in the rate and quantity of stormwater runoff. Use light-colored paving materials (with a Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) of at least 29), or an open grid pavement system for at least 50% of the site hardscape.

Use concrete. The range of concrete reflectivity for concrete with gray cement is 0.35 - 0.40 when new, and 0.20 - 0.30 when aged. The range of concrete reflectivity for concrete with white cement is 0.70 - 0.80 when new, and 0.40 - 0.60 when aged. Use concrete made with substitute materials such as fly ash or asphalt made with reclaimed asphalt pavement, recycled concrete road base, recycled asphalt road base.
