called to play an even more significant role in the future. In your view, what are the most

you are currently aware that could, in the coming years, affect our business?

Question #3

High Purpose at GMCR and the Opportunity for World Benefit

A. Employee Version. Think back to when you first became aware of GMCR as an
organization with a sense of purpose or mission. It may have been when you were
offered a position at GMCR and you decided to say yes, or it may have been after
you were already working here. What were the attributes that most attracted and
excited you about your work, about the people, or even the sense of purpose or
mission of GMCR as an organization?

B. Green Mountain Coffee Roasters has not only articulated a high purpose, but has also
lived a high purpose in terms of customers, partners, people, countries of origin, the
environment, public policy, and so on. Tell me the way that you see GMCR having
     tangible world benefit.

        a. Describe the three ways that GMCR does benefit the world – three things that
make you proud to be part of this company and community.

          b. Please share with me one story, an example of GMCR being an agent of world
benefit—it could be small; it could be large; but one example that has
provided inspiration and sense of purpose for you.

Internal focus. Now, let’s think about what you see as the best internal practices:
strengths and qualities that provide a foundation for us to achieve high growth and positive
world benefit. What are those strengths and building blocks – strategies, systems,
structures, values, process teams, technological and human capacities, etc. What are those
distinctive and core strengths that we should keep, and build upon even as we move into a
changing future?

Question # 4

Moving from Good to Great

In creating conditions for phenomenal, sustainable growth, great organizations know what
they do best, what it is they do not want to change as they adapt and streamline for the
future. They know the strategic level capabilities that set them apart from other
organizations.

A. As we think about taking GMCR the next step to being a world class business,
measured by both profitability and social benefit, what is the one thing you believe
differentiates us, something we could literally be the best at in the world?

B. Tell me an example of a time when GMCR successfully grew its business, a time that
might provide us with some insights as we think about ways to grow the business in
the future. Our business has grown most phenomenally when….?

C. Describe what the 3 words ―sustainable phenomenal growth‖ mean to you, and
please share your vision of the most successful realization of sustainable phenomenal
growth for GMCR. Building on the best of our past but now leaping way beyond, what
new things might we consider if we wanted to catalyze growth in a phenomenal way?
What could we be doing (small or large) that is new, different, changed, or
     improved?

Question # 5

Pervasive Leadership

Leadership is about growth and change and about bringing out the best in people. High
performing organizations empower and challenge people to initiate beyond what they
believe possible. In so doing, these organizations nurture the inherent leadership capacity
within each employee – recognizing that leadership includes and, also extends far beyond,
position or level.

   A. You probably have seen or experienced a number of exemplars of leadership in your
years at GMCR, individual and group acts of leadership you admire (for external
stakeholders, “in your years of contact with GMCR” or simply answer this question by
reflecting on your own thoughts on leadership). Think for a moment about one
story, one example of the kind of leadership you value, something you have
experienced, heard about or seen at any level of GMCR. What happened? What is it
you most value in this story of leadership? Based on this story, what are the key
qualities of outstanding leadership, in your view?

                                                                 Participant Worksheets

     B. Now, think for a minute about the leaders you value most and of what you notice
about their self awareness and the way they manage themselves, their commitments
to developing themselves, and about the ways that their personal leadership affects
their ability to lead others. What, in your experience, is the sign of a leader who is
very aware of himself/ herself and of those around him / her? How does that self-
awareness show up in the way he/ she leads others and provides leadership to the
        organization?

C. For ―Leadership at Every Level‖ to become a reality, it calls for organizational support
as well as taking personal initiative.

            a. What support would you need to be more of a leader in your current position?

            b. When supported in this way, what would that allow you to do? How would
that feel? What would be the benefits?
