◊ First Stop: Look Up Your VSU ID Number

Your VSU ID is a 9-digit number used in place of your social security number.

To find it, go to the VSU/SCT Banner Homepage at: http://www.valdosta.edu/it/eas/sis/

Scroll down the page until you see the Related Resources menu. Click on the VSU ID Lookup.

You now see the page (below). Enter your personal data in the boxes as specified.

                                                  2
◊ Second Stop: Change Your PIN to a Password

Return to the Banner home page and click on the prominent button.

Use the page (as pictured below) to enter the Banner system:

       • Enter your 9-digit VSU ID number
       • Enter your PIN
(It consists of your birth date – NO slashes and a 2-digit year.)
Eg: January 2, 1973 would be this PIN: 010273
       • Click the “Login” button

You will now be prompted to change your PIN to a Password.

                       This screen will appear:

      • Re-enter your PIN in the first box
      • Enter your New Password in the second box.
(You make it up. The new password must contain 8 characters composed of letters and numbers.)
           Eg: my24name
(This password expires every 180 days. Create a new one when that happens.)

                                                     3
◊ Third Stop: Find Your VSU Email Address

Return to the Banner home page and click on the prominent button again.

Now you are ready to login to the Banner system.
Enter your VSU ID (all begin with 870+6 digits) and your new Password (example given below).

From the Banner Menu, select the “Personal Information” link (as circled below).

On this screen, click the “View E-mail Addresses” option.

                                                   4
Your VSU E-mail address is on the line marked “Preferred.”
This is the address received by your professors and used for all VSU functions.

◊ Fourth Stop: Register for Your VSU Classes

You can do this from the Banner system, too.

From the “Main Menu,” select the “Student & Financial Aid” link (as circled below).

From the “Student & Financial Aid” menu, click “Registration” (as circled below).

Online guides that show you step-by-step how to register and use other Banner services were under
revision at the time that this E-Hiker Guide was being revised. Check the home page of the Registrar at
http://www.valdosta.edu/registrar/ for new links to help guides.

                                                   5
◊ Fifth Stop: Using BlazeNet E-mail
You can click on the BlazeNet link in the right corner of the VSU Home page or go directly to it through

answers many questions asked by first-time BlazeNet users.

Explore your personalized options, including the “groups” link.

                                                      6
On the “My Groups” page, you will find the “MLIS Students” link.
All MLIS students and faculty are members of this group.

                             Tuition Waiver Information & Policies

If you are on a tuition waiver through the University System of Georgia (USG) Tuition Assistance
Program (TAP), please be advised of these two conditions related to course registration:

       1) A student on a USG tuition waiver who withdraws from an approved course prior to its
completion will be ineligible for a waiver for one semester.

        2) A student on a USG tuition waiver receiving an Incomplete in a course has one semester to
complete the course (tuition-paying students have one year). The final course grade must be submitted to
the TAP Coordinator of the home institution. Failure to convert your Incomplete to a grade within that
time period results in ineligibility for a waiver for one semester.

For a full description of TAP regulations, see the USG: Tuition Assistance Program Policy at
http://www.usg.edu/employment/benefits/tuition/policy.phtml/.

GALILEO is the name given to the network of online publications, databases and Web sites available
through its member libraries. You may use the GALILEO system from any computer with an Internet
connection. If you are not on campus, you will be prompted for passwords. If you connect to GALILEO
from your BlazeNet email page (as shown on Page 7) OR through the “Anywhere Access” login (shown
above), you need not enter the GALILEO password.

                                                   13
GIL is the name given to the Library’s online catalog. It is available in many formats.
You can find GIL through the “BOOKS” tab on the Library’s “Quick Search tab.

Hint: For best results in this easy search box, use quotes around titles and drop A, An, or The as leading
words. Use quotes around names and invert them (e.g., enter David Macaulay as “macaulay david”)

You can click on the GIL@VSU Library Catalog link (just above the easy search box).
This search entry screen lets you connect to Keyword and Exact search options.

You can also link to the Advanced Search (just below the easy search box).
This search tool gives you more precision and more options.

                                                     14
ILLiad is the University’s Interlibrary Loan system. Use your BlazeNet login to submit requests.

There are two types of ILL delivery:

        • If you submit a regular ILL request, the print materials (e.g., books) are mailed to you.
Whenever possible, electronic copies of journal articles are e-mailed to you.

        • If you submit your request via GIL Express, the material on your request will be delivered to
the USG library nearest you and you will be expected to retrieve it from that library.

The MLIS Program has a policy that discourages using the ILL service for obtaining required textbooks
which you will find at http://www.valdosta.edu/mlis/student_resources/documents/ILL_Textbooks.pdf.

Borrowing Books from Other USG Libraries

Your VSU enrollment entitles you to borrow books in-person from any library in the University System of
Georgia (USG). You, of course, must abide by the loan policies of the lending library. Book check-out
requires showing your VSU ID card. If you do not have your ID card in hand, you must give your 9-digit
VSU ID number + a government-issued picture ID (driver's license, Georgia ID card, US passport, or US
military ID).
