winter 2009 learn to skate
The Learn-to-Skate program offers 10 weeks of lessons with an emphasis on fun and progressive skill development. Trained instructors will teach participants the various skills of each skating level by utilizing specially selected equipment, activities and games in a noncompetitive environment. To participate in the Learn-to Skate program, please note the following: • Sharpen hockey or figure skates prior to the start of lessons. • All children should wear mitts or gloves. Layers of warm clothing are recommended. Snow suits are appropriate for preschool-aged children. • A helmet is mandatory for all children’s and adult’s Learn to Skate programs except for Novice, Junior and Senior figure skating levels. This does not include parents who are participating in the Parent & Tot programs; however, it is highly recommended that you wear one. • A proper-fitting CSA-approved hockey helmet is recommended. No bicycle helmets allowed. • All programs listed in the chart below are eligible for Child Fitness Tax Credits for children under the age of 10 years.

Parent or guardian must be on skates. 4- to 5-year old children participating in an ice skate program for the first time, or for those who have taken Parent & Tot. 4- to 5-year old children that have completed Preschool I. 6- to 9-year old children that have completed Preschool I & II. 6- to 9-year old children that are brand new skaters who want to learn how to skate. Must have completed Beginner IA or Beginner IB. 10 years and over, new to skating who want to learn how to skate. 10 years and over, must have completed Youth/Adult Beginner. Must have completed Beginner II. Must have completed Intro. Figure. Must have completed Basic Figure. Must have completed Novice Figure. Must have completed Junior Figure. Must have completed Beginner II. Must have completed Introductory Power. Must have completed Elementary Power. Must have completed Pre-Junior Power. Must have completed Junior Power. Must have completed Intermediate Power. Must have completed Senior Power. *Stick and puck/ring required.

With the guidance of the instructor, parents will help their preschoolers to stand up by themselves and progress to moving forward unassisted. Preschoolers will learn to get up by themselves and move forward and backwards. Glide forward and move backwards, introduction to stopping. Skate forward and move backwards, U-turns, introduction to stopping and forward crosscuts. Skaters will learn to get up by themselves and move forward and backwards, U-turns, introduction to stopping and forward crosscuts. Forward and backwards skating, back v-stops, forward crosscuts. Forward and backwards skating, stopping, turning and skill development. Forward crosscuts, backstop, hockey stop, double sculling. Forward and backwards skating, forward crosscuts, U-turns, two foot spins, two foot jump. Forward crosscuts right and left, bunnyhop, two foot spin, spiral, drag, two foot turns, forward inside edges. Outside edges, turns, jumps, one foot spins and spirals, introduction to backward crosscuts. Mohawks, back edges, jumps and camel spins. Solo or group number with footwork, jumps and spins.

Public Skating is a valued service provided for the many citizens of Winnipeg. Effective January 1, 2009, in keeping with the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and in promoting safe and positive activities for the children and youth of our community, all public skating activities will be provided free of charge. We encourage everyone to take advantage of these wonderful family opportunities. Free Skating times are available at 13 arenas as outlined below. Please note that some refinements have been made to the overall schedule that is currently being utilized for the Fall session. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for at all city-owned arenas and outdoor skating rinks, we strongly recommend the use of a CSA-approved hockey helmet for all age groups. All skaters should wear mitts or gloves and layers of warm clothing for skating enjoyment.

first line hockey skills • coed
A program for hockey players who want to improve basic hockey skills such as stick handling, passing and receiving and shooting. Each class will include a brief power skating session. Stick and puck required. Full hockey equipment is recommended. Must be able to skate. Helmet is mandatory. No class Feb 15. Fee: $55.12 10 weeks

outdoor pleasure skating
Numerous outdoor pleasure skating facilities are available at community centres and other park sites throughout the City of Winnipeg. Kildonan Park, Assiniboine Park, St. Vital Park and Harbour View Recreation Complex offer the opportunity to enjoy free skating accompanied by music and a warm shelter.
