A SERVANT’S HEART, THE SECRET TO UNITY! ! Mahatma Gandhi, would’ve been an Christian if it wasn’t because the disunity of Christians. They turned him away as he was entering the church just because the way he was dressed. The preached love but do not show love. He became one of the greatest Hindu leader that ever lived. ! Malcolm X, would’ve been a Christian if it wasn’t for the disunity of Christians. He was the son of a Black preacher, His mother was white. But because of some people who call themselves Christians who burned his house and killed his black father, the KKK (The Klu Klux Klan) have been the stumbling block of Malcolm becoming a Christian. He became the most influential Muslim leader in history of America. John 17:20-23 Jesus prayed… “My prayer is not for them alone (his disciples). I pray for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. We need unity… We need to be united… We need to understand that we are created to be INTERDEPENDENT to each other…. Not dependent!!! Just like God had created nature…. We are interdependent to each other. FLYING DUCKS… Truly, God has ordained His creation to live in community. Besides human, many of God’s other creatures are created so that they must live in harmony and relationship. Jack Canfield, Mark Hansen and Patty Hansen’s great little book Condensed Chicken Soup for the Soul explains how geese function in relationship. The authors inform us that geese increase their flying range by 71% by flying in their “V” formation. “As each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately following.” When a goose gets out of line it immediately feels the added drag and rejoins the group. “When the lead goose GETS TIRED, it rotates back into the pack and another goose flies the point. The consistent willingness to lead and follow improves performance for the whole wing. Geese honk from behind to encourage those in front to keep up the pace. The followers cheer the leaders on. ! even the ants work together…and need each other… ! the herds in the field know that it will be safer for them to be with the others instead of being alone and being an easy prey for tigers or lions. How can we be united…? We will never be united when we only look for our own gain… Don’t ask what your country can do for you…. But ask what can you do for your country… With the life covenant that we are introducing in this church…. Don’t ask what the church can do for you if you sign…. But ask yourself… what can you do for this church to… how can you be of service to your brothers and sisters.. what part can you play to establish God’s kingdom in this place…? We need to have the spirit of a servant!!! What is the real meaning of a SERVANT? A SLAVE… Take note of the word SERVANT In the olden days.., SERVANTS were actually SLAVES…., which have been bought from the slave market. They do not have THEIR OWN RIGHTS any more, but they wholly belong to his / her master. Their sole purpose of living, is to serve their master and not to live for their own needs. Before we agree to anything, let us consider this important fact that when we consider our selves servants or slaves of Christ.., it actually means that we are willing to give up our rights…, our feelings…, our needs, etc. 1 Cor 9:19 Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone to win as many as possible. Matthew 23: 11-12 “The greatest among you will be your servant. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted”. But how can we be a servant?????? Attitudes of a SERVANT: a S.O.F.T heart!!! The letter “S” 1. A Servant SERVES. We need to have the attitude of a servant, who is not concentrating to promote ourselves… but look for ways in which we can SERVE…, FIRST…, the Lord Jesus SECOND…, the people around us. Jesus fed the 500 people…. He didn’t have to…. Normally He would be fed…. But he had a heart that serves… In Mark 6:30 on wards, Jesus was tired… He told his disciples to come with Him to a quiet place and get some rest.. They sneaked out quietly from the crowd and go on a boat to a solitary place.. But when people saw him and his disciples leave… they ran on foot on the ground and got to the other side before Jesus… when Jesus saw the multitude on the other side… He said…”WILL YOU JUST LEAVE ME ALONE FOR ONE SECOND…!!!” No… He didn’t say that…. His had compassion for them… he had a SOFT heart they were hungry…, they were in need… he began o teach them again.. he began to comfort them again… he began to satisfy their needs again,… he put aside his hunger and tiredness… He served them again… He put other people first… Himself last… Do not be overwhelmed with our own problems in life… True story…. Just came back from business trip… At Kalimantan for a week to shot wood logging place… Dry cleaned all my good black clothing and expensive colourful jackets… have to go to Singapore next three days… to do some post production on a tv commercial no clothes.., no news fro dry cleaners.. Ari rang… burnt! The day before I’m suppose to leave… I was doing a launching for some kind of car tyre at the Ballroom of Mulia Hotel in Jakarta.. my tickets and passport were ready, they’re with my seecretary… my secretary and my crew drove to Senayan Shopping Centre…, which was close to Mulia Hotel to get some KFC… they parked in the secure car park… then their car got broken into…. I didn’t know anything…. when my secretary arrived at the hotel… she refused to go in the ballroom… she was crying histerically and some of my coleaguess were trying to console her… I approached her and tried to console her… as usual I joke around with her… but she cried even more louder… she told me… “I lost your passport and your plane ticket!” “Our car got broken into and they stole your passport and ticket…” “I’m sorry Pak Ben” inside I was shocked…. But I chose to stay cool… its done … nothing else I could do… but what I can do is to make her feel better…. So I did… I told her its ok… I joked around some more…. She started to smile…. I put her first… my self last…. I served her in her time of need A few months later.., on my last day at the office, evryone wrote me a note… she wrote me one also… “Tank you for not getting angry at me when I lost your ticket and passport. All of us will miss you…, especially me!” Or are you going to put your friend first? Over your own problems… And put yourself last..? Will you serve your friend first and have a servants heart?? Do you have a SOFT heart?? He told His disciples to feed them.. But one of disciples complained and said.. What…? Feed all these mouths…? All 5000 men , not including women and children. Took out his calculator and said.. ”It will cost 8 months wages to feed all these people!” A servant is not calculating… a servant serves Have a SOFT heart!!! Just like the woman with the alabaster box…. She washed Jesus’s feet with her hair and poured a very expensive perfume on his feet… Judas said..” that just cost you 1 years wages!!! You could’ve given it to the poor you silly woman!! A servant is not calculating…. A servant serves Have a SOFT heart!!!! Jesus washed the disciples feet… Explain the culture of feet washing…, The newest servant (rookie), the lowest in rank of all servants will have do the feet washing job. No chairs or tables…, the sit on the ground, recline on some cushions, food in front of them along with their dirty and smelly feet. That’s why they need a foot washer… just a little different from the hot towels you get on aeroplanes… hehehehehe But Jesus took the role of the most lowest of servants… to teach us and modeled to us that we need to be like servants.. serving each other. Jesus was not calculating…, even He was the highest in rank and superior to his disciples… Actually He was God himself in human form… He had a servant’s heart.., he serves… He had a SOFT heart! The letter “O” 2. A Servant OBEYS ! But we cannot just obey UNWILLINGLY…, ! We have to be obedient…, to God and to the authority God has put over us Matthew 8:8-10 (Faith of the Centurion) The Centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, “Go” and he goes; and that one “Come” and he comes. I say to my servant, “Do this” and he does it.” He is a man under Authority…. But when he tells his servant to do something…, he will do it.., willingly…, because he knows he is a servant. ! Jesus said “Not many in Israel have this kind of faith”. ! In other words Jesus is looking for people with this kind of attitude and mentality ! A heart of a “SERVANT”. ! Let us also have this kind of attitude, having a heart of a servant and an OBEDIENT MENTALITY towards the people that God has placed on top of us. We need to have the spirit of a servant.. A servant doesn’t care who his master is… What level of maturity is he at…? How smart is he…? How influential is he…? How rich is he…? How much does he know the Bible…? A servant will obey whatever his master tells him… Obey your leaders… obey your pastors… obey your parents…. Obey your boss…. Obey the LAW!!!!! Keep to the SPEED LIMIT! Do not park where it says NO pARKING! Ephesians 6:5-8 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favour when their eye is upon you, but like slaves to Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free. Don’t have a hardened heart… That looks for the good of your self… To always looking to prove that you are right… Wanting your own way…. Obey… Have a SOFT heart!!! The letter “F” 3. A Servant is FAITHFULL Proverbs 20:6 Many a man claims to have unfailing love, but a faithful man who can find? Luke 12:42-44 The Lord answered, “ Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in cahrge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time? It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns. I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possesions. Matthew 25:21 His master replied, “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will out you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness”. God is looking for servants who will be faithful in the task that God has entrusted to them and who will be faithful and true to each other. If it is ushering…., be faithful in being a great usher.. if it is playing music, be faithful in being a great musician if it is leading a cell…, be fathful in being a great cell leader… if it is picking up your friend every cell day and every Sunday…, be faithful in being a great pick up-er! If it is cooking… or cleaning… or studying… or working at your work place…. In caring for your family… Be faithfull When it is our time to be face the great white throne…. Jesus will say to us… “Well done, good and faithful servant” But make no mistake…, He will not say “well done” if we haven’t done well… He will not say “good” if we haven’t been good… He will not say “faithful” if we haven’ been faithful to His vision and to our brothers and sisters He will not say “servant” if we haven’t served… God and each other. “When a goose, for whatever reason, falls out of the formation, two other geese follow it down and provide help and protection. They stay until the goose recovers or dies. Only then do they launch out together or join another formation to help them catch their group.” They are faithful each other…… The letter “T” 4. A Servant is TOLERANT We need to understand that all of us are different… That we are not alike each other…. There are certain things in other people’s behaviour that will make us cringe… There are somethings in other people that we just cannot stand…. But the key is tolerance…. As is written in Ephesians 4:2-3 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing one with another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Bearing with one another… tolerance…. At times we cannot 100 % agree to somebody…. But it is up to us… if we want to focus on the 95% in which we agree on or to focus on the 5% whish we don’t agree on… It is up to us if we want to focus on their faults or if we decide to focus on their strengths…. We are ONE BODY…. We have the same goal… We are going the same way…. You might not agree 100% about signing the covenant statement… You might not agree 100% how we do cells… You might not agree 100% about everyone being a leader…. You might not agree 100% with the way your leader is tackling a certain situation… You might not agree 100% what some people are doing…. You might not agree 100% to what your parents are doing… You might not agree 100% with what your boss is doing… But if we want UNITY…. We cannot let all these petty little things to become the FUEL of division….!!! We need to have tolerance with each other…. We need to have a soft heart…. We are going towards the same goal…. We are in the process of PERFECTING THE BRIDE FO CHRIST!!!! That is why it is very important for us to establish covenant with each other…. That no matter what… we need each other we are interdependent upon each other… we need to be united… we need to be one…. So that world may know and see that Jesus Christ is Lord… Let us be ONE VOICE!!! How can we do this …? How can we be one …? We need to be servants with SOFT Hearts… SOFT S…. for a heart that SERVES O… for a heart that OBEYS F… for a heart that is FAITHFUL T… for a heart that is TOLERANT Jesus prayed… “… that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that world may believe that you have sent me. Conclusion: ! if you want unity in your family…. Have a SOFT heart. ! If you want unity in your work place… Have a SOFT heart. ! If you want unity in your team…, Have a SOFT heart ! If you want unity in your cell.., Have a SOFT heart… ! If you want unity in your church…, Have a SOFT Heart. ! If you want unity in this world… Start to have a SOFT heart and teach other people to have a SOFT heart. -Amen- .
