The St George Hospital is part of the Central Hospital Network of South Eastern Sydney Illawarra Health and
participates in the Area's Mental Health Service Registered Nurse Transition.

The Mental Health Service at St George Hospital, provides the following:

       Acute and general inpatient mental health

       Aged care and mental health service

       A 24 hour community-based services including crisis management, case management and rehabilitation

       Services for children and adolescents

       A consultation/liaison service to the general hospital population

       Psychiatric Emergency Care Centre

Current projects include:

       Clinical Supervision

       Management of suicidal behaviours

       Children of families affected by mental illness

       General Practitioner shared care

       Enrolled Nurses Program for Mental Health

       Beacon Demonstration Site Project for the reduction of seclusion and restraint.

Our services include
Overall services include mental health assessment, inpatient care, individual counselling and treatment, case
management and rehabilitation.

Commencement date
The proposed intake month is January 2010 however, where an alternate date is sought, this may be negotiated on
an individual basis.

Framework structure
South Eastern Sydney Illawarra Health is proud to promote its Area-wide Mental Health Registered Nurse Transition
Framework. Through this initiative we aim to provide you with a range of experiences and a chance to sample

various mental health nursing specialty areas in order to assist in building your career in this your chosen field.
Specifically, the Framework is designed to provide new nurses in mental health with the necessary clinical skills
and knowledge to practice safely and deliver a high standard of clinical care.

This Area Health Service contains many of the premier teaching hospitals in NSW and has a long-standing
commitment to clinical teaching. Our hospitals are clustered into three Networks to help improve the integrated
delivery of health services in our region and mental health services are located in each of them.

In order to provide consistency of content and introduce other unique features such as shared study days with
participants from other facilities, the Area Mental Health Registered Nurse Transition Framework has been designed
to be delivered in the same way at each of the hospitals across the Networks:

Northern Hospital Network:      Prince of Wales Hospital

Central Hospital Network:      St George Hospital

                               Sutherland Hospital –

Southern Hospital Network: Illawarra
                           on behalf of Lake Illawarra, Shoalhaven and Wollongong regions

Framework features
        A one year specialist transition to mental health nursing

        Comprehensive orientation

        Supernumerary status on commencement to hospital/ward/service

        A variety of work settings which range from unique inner-city through to rural locations

        Clinical placements which may include experiences in inpatient units and community mental health and
        crisis teams with adolescents, adults and aged care in a variety of specialist mental health fields

        Assignment to a multidisciplinary team

        The support of a clinical preceptor and regular clinical supervision

        Mandatory study days with classes at St George Hospital or Shellharbour Hospital which focus on
        discussion, critical thinking and education to enhance your professional development. Note: You may be
        required to complete academic assignments during your transition.

        Advance accreditation towards post-graduate studies at the University of Technology, Sydney, Southern
        Cross University or the University of Wollongong

        Permanent employment at the end of the transition

Important Notes:

During your first year of employment, you will need to undertake some training in Suicide Prevention, Aggression
Management and the Mental Health Outcomes Assessment Tool (MHOAT). This can be arranged through your
Nursing Unit Manager.

At St George Hospital we offer two clinical rotations through both hospital and community mental health


A full and current NSW driver’s license is essential for the community placements of this program.

There is no on-site accommodation at St George Hospital.

station and is only a five minute walk from the hospital campus.
