Remote Access Guide Access to online resources from outside the Oxford network Working within the University network If you are a member of Oxford University and are using a PC, Mac or Unix workstation within the ox.ac.uk domain, you will be able to access most electronic resources without requiring a username and/or password. Working outside the University network Remote access to all e-resources Current advice on remote access can be found at www.ouls.ox.ac.uk/eresources/remote_access Use the Log In on OxLIP+ and your Oxford Single Sign-On (SSO). Click on Log In and you will be prompted to fill in your Oxford SSO. This is the same as the username and password used for Webauth, Weblearn or Herald. You may have to choose the University of Oxford from an intermediary webpage. You can either find University of Oxford in the drop-down list or type Oxford in the keyword search box. You will then be presented with the University of Oxford Single Sign-On Login Important: if you sign-in using your SSO you need to close the browser completely as well as logging off to ensure you really are logged off afterwards. Once logged in you have remote access to all databases, electronic reference works, e-book and e-journal packages that are controlled via IP-recognition. This includes virtually all e-resources with the exception of:  Digimap,  Zetoc,  Crossfire,  ESDS: To access these databases users will be prompted for their SSO again. Information about the specific requirements of individual databases which have special restrictions can be found on OxLIP+. Click on the [image of i] icon by each resource. Remote access to all e-journals is also possible directly from OU e-journals . You will be prompted to log on with your Oxford Single Sign-On (SSO) when clicking through from the list of e-journal titles to the individual journal homepage. It is easy to click through to OU e-Journals from OxLIP+ and if you used the login from OxLIP+ you would still be authenticated in OU e-Journals via the SSO. Athens Since the beginning of August 2008 Oxford University has provided access to electronic resources via the Oxford SSO rather than Athens. Access via Athens has been discontinued as has the Athens Alternative Login. The new arrangements using the Oxford SSO will enable you to easily access a wider range of resources (such as e-journals). Personalised services A few resources (e.g. ZETOC) used Athens for personalised services such as alerts. These will have to be either migrated or cancelled and reinstated. (a) If your alerts were registered using your Athens details, you will have received an email from the database provider explaining what you need to do. (b) If your alerts were registered using your email address and password, you do not need to make any changes (c) For advice on access to legal databases please contact the law librarians at law.library@bodley.ox.ac.uk. For more information or for help with accessing a particular resource please email eresources@ouls.ox.ac.uk. Accessing electronic resources direct from publishers’ websites For some resources, the publisher's website will allow you to log in directly using your SSO. However, since some publishers are not yet SSO-compliant, this is not possible for all resources, so it is recommended that you begin from OxLIP+ each time. Logging into OxLIP+ will authenticate you. If you do choose to go direct to a publisher’s website you may see a log-in where you can use the SSO. The link is called different things by different suppliers (which is another reason to access via OxLIP+) but can be referred to as Institutional log-in, UK Access Management Federation log-in, Academic Login or Shibboleth. Log-in options can also be seen which are independent arrangements offered by the publisher to individual or corporate subscribers and won’t accept the SSO. It is much easier to use the OxLIP+ route. Remote access (using VPN) It is also still possible to be allocated an Oxford IP address through the University’s Virtual Private Network (VPN) service although no longer necessary for access to electronic resources. This requires registering for a remote access username and password and installing VPN software on your PC. More information at: www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/network/vpn Information for external readers using Oxford University Libraries Direct, off-campus access to all electronic resources is not available to those holding library cards (rather than blue-stripe University cards). See www.ouls.ox.ac.uk/services/admissions for information about entitlement. External readers are only entitled to walk-in, i.e. on-campus, use by the terms of our subscriptions to most electronic resources. However, a few resources (principally in law and business) are further restricted by log-in to current University members even on campus. Readers who have affiliations to other academic institutions may be able to obtain off-campus access to their home subscription resources remotely by arrangement with their home institution. External readers using their own computers can access the resources either by plugging into a data point in the library or by using the wireless network oulsreader. See www.ouls.ox.ac.uk/sers/support_ouls/wireless2 for details. Problems with access Please report any problems with accessing electronic resources using the Oxford Username Single Sign-On to eresources@ouls.ox.ac.uk. Problems with your own username and password should be directed to the OUCS see www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/helpcentre. What do I do if I have forgotten or never knew my Oxford SSO username and password? For online help see www.ict.ox.ac.uk/oxford/username/ . All members of Oxford University holding a current University Card automatically have an Oxford Single Sign-On Account (Bodleian Reader cards are not valid for this purpose). New members of the University are sent the account details in a letter from OUCS to the member's primary University address, normally within three working days of the new University card being issued. The account then needs to be activated within 30 days. If you have a current University Card and have never received or have lost the account details, your local IT staff can provide these for you. Alternatively, you can contact the OUCS Help Centre either in person, or via their help request form. OUCS can provide account details via the University internal post or via email to a working University email account. They cannot be given over the telephone or sent to non-University postal or email addresses. I've forgotten my Oxford Single Sign-On password, or it has expired - what should I do? If you have forgotten your Oxford Single Sign-On password or it has expired, you can reset it yourself. To do this, visit the OUCS password reset web page: www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/registration/oxford/forgottenpassword.xml. If you find that you can't remember the answer to your security question (or are a long-standing University member who has never set one up), you will need to contact the OUCS Help Centre www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/helpcentre (tel:(2)73200 or use their help request form to ask for a Rescue Code. Use the Rescue Code to set up a security question and answer via the web page at: https://webauth.ox.ac.uk/security_question. Then reset your password at https://webauth.ox.ac.uk/reset_password. Further help  If you don’t know your Oxford Single Sign-on Username and password go to www.ict.ox.ac.uk/oxford/username  If you have any registration queries email registration@oucs.ox.ac.uk  For help with username or general IT queries go to: www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/helpcentre  For VPN troubleshooting go to: www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/helpcentre/troubleshooting/vpn  For assistance with electronic resources email eresources@ouls.ox.ac.uk  Full details of OUCS Remote Access Services are available at: www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/network/remote Important note: if you sign-in using your SSO you need to close the browser completely as well as logging off. This is particularly important if you are using a public computer room. If you do not close down your browser others may be able to access your account. This leaflet is also available online in alternative formats (www.ouls.ox.ac. uk/guides). Please contact aracu@ouls.ox.ac.uk for requests for Braille and audio.
