Presidents Note
With the AGM behind us we can now concentrate on the forthcoming season. The AGM
resulted in the 2009/10 season committee being elected. There are a few new faces joining
the committee. I am very pleased to welcome Bree Ambry heading our Training &
Assessment section while Dianne Summers joins us to add to the representation of our
Nippers. We have two positions yet to be filled; these being head of Youth Leadership &
Development and Boat Captain. The AGM witnessed the election of Max Jeffrey as a life
member of the club. This was a well received nomination and well deserved.

We have received over 250 memberships so far this year using the Lifesaving Online system.
To ensure membership renewals are processed quickly please pay your fees online, or post a
cheque, at the same time as you request your renewal through Lifesaving Online. Without
payment we can’t guarantee nippers a position in the Nipper program.

We will no doubt see a gradual ramp up of activity at the club as we go into the spring
season. Once again I mention that it is our club, so if you see something that may need some
maintenance or cleaning up, please put up your hand to assist.

Regards
Marc

Nipper News
Where does the time go? Winter sports are coming to an end. Spring is here and summer is approaching at
lightning speed. And at Point Leo SLSC, we are already working on our amazing Nipper Programme. Things
will be pretty much the same as last year with two sessions running:

CUBS: Under 7, 8, 9 and now also including Under 10
LIONS: Under 11, 12, 13 and 14
Dates, times and details will be confirmed in the next Mine.

Nipper numbers will NOT be increasing this year so to ensure your place, you must renew by 30th
September, 2009. Your spots will be given out to our ever increasing waiting list on 1st October, 2009.
Registration is online and Kim has done a fantastic job in providing clear instructions (If I can do it
then anyone can!) Please read them carefully and follow.

One change that has occurred is in the structure and organization of The Junior Programme. The change is
that we do now actually have a structure! I take this opportunity to thank Gavin Taylor, Stacey Lethlean, Lucy
White, Blane Paton, Duncan Fraser-Smith and Di Summers for brainstorming and developing this. I believe
that with this structure the Point Leo Junior Program will only get stronger.

Point Leo SLSC has the greatest parent support. Our parents are enthusiastic, involved and very talented
and that is why our program is so great (that is a decent pat on the back!).This year, there is an expectation
that all families will have at least one parent assisting with the program. Details on roles available will be sent
out in October.

We are prepared to run an Adult Bronze Course leading up to summer if required. Please email me on
juliaosh@bigpond.net.au to register your interest.

Below is a word from Blane Paton who is the Water Safety Coordinator for the upcoming season:

Water Safety For Nippers

As most of our members are aware, our nipper program has grown enormously over the past three years.
This season we are anticipating 400 nippers.

Two areas that will require greater parental support are:

    1. WATER SAFETY Adult Bronze (parents) are needed to assist in swimming areas and board areas.
    2. I.R.B. Additional adult bronzes are needed to qualify as IRB crew and IRB drivers.

I will be contacting current adult bronze holders to ask for your assistance with the nipper program. However

Max Jeffrey – inducted as an Honorary Life Member.
At the recently held AGM Max Jeffrey was nominated for Honorary Life Membership of Point Leo SLSC. This
nomination was approved by members attending the meeting. All would agree that Max is quite a unique and
popular member of the club who is only too happy to assist in those day to day matters that continue to crop
up over the patrolling season. You might not be aware however of the following factors that were considered
by our Honorary Life Members before they agreed to nominate Max to the AGM.

    • Max gained his Bronze Medallion in February 1963 and has been listed as an Active, Active
Reserve, Associate or 500 Club Member since that date.

    • Our available patrol records reveal that Max carried out his patrol obligations up until the 1985/1986
season, a period of 22 years. For some years he was a Patrol Captain.

    • Max was Clubhouse Administrator in 1978/1979 and was a club Vice President from 1980/1981 to
1983/1984, and from 1999/2000 until 2000/2001 – a period of 7 years serving on the club committee.

                                                                                                                 8
Other Club Involvement.

    • Supporting roles at 1985 SLSA National Titles, State Titles and other senior and junior carnivals held
        at Point Leo.
    • Assistance with Nipper BBQ’s since mid nineties and a minor role in helping on the beach in the
early days of Nippers at Point Leo.
    • Worked with the organizing committee to successfully run the annual Boxing Day swim, the club’s
most consistent fundraiser held at Point Leo.
    • Loyal supporter of club activities - fundraisers, local/interstate carnivals, working bees, identifying
        and sourcing potential club sponsors.

During the 2008/2009 season the club hosted three major beach events at Point Leo – the Flinders–Point
Leo Boat & Ski Race, the Boxing Day swim and a Senior Carnival. On each of these occasions Max drove a
tractor transferring equipment and boats on and off the beach. He has assisted with the Nippers BBQ and
has been an integral part of the team that has organized and carried out the Spit Roast Dinners at the club.

Max graciously accepted his Honorary Life Membership medallion and certificate in front of his many friends
and in particular his son Andrew, and daughter Sarah at the AGM. Unfortunately, his acceptance speech did
not match the Gettysburg Address but we knew what he was about.
Well done, Maxwell!!

Vale – Graham Tierney
It is with great sorrow that we advise the passing of Life Member and past President Graham Tierney.

Graham joined the club with his family, wife Clare, son Gary and daughter Cheryl in 1965, and was soon
involved in the administration of the club. He took on the role of Competition Manager in 1968 and was one
of the guiding lights at the club at a time when Point Leo was at its strongest competitively.

Graham was elected President in 1972, a position he held for 5 years. He later chaired the 1985 Australian
Titles Organizing Committee and was elected to Life Member in the early 1980's. Graham’s official
contribution to the club was, however, a very small part of the influence he had on the members. He was
always ready to listen to any problems and helped many young members through difficult times with both
wise advice and practical assistance.

Graham left an ongoing legacy to the club in his son Gary and grandson's Mark and Haydn.
Graham was truly one of nature’s gentlemen.
The clubs sincere sympathy goes to Clare, Gary, Louise, Mark, Haydn, Cheryl and family.
Thank you
The Tierney family would like to thank all members of the Point Leo SLSC for their support and kind words
on the recent passing of Graham Tierney. Graham loved his time at Point Leo and will be long remembered.
Special thanks to those many members who represented the club at Graham’s funeral - it was a great tribute
to Graham & his family and was greatly appreciated.

The following article appeared in Lifesaving Victoria’s newsletter
Bree Ambry, Community Education and Lifesaving Integration Coordinator, reflects on Life Saving Victoria's
first Lifesaving Experience Day for deaf children: Life Saving Victoria, in conjunction with Deaf Children
Australia held its first Lifesaving Experience Day on Saturday 4th April 2009 at Sandridge Life Saving Club.
The day gave a number of deaf children the opportunity to learn lifesaving skills in a safe and controlled
environment.
The participants, aged 11 to 19 years old, learnt CPR, beach sprints and flags during the program. Despite
the cold and windy weather they also ventured into the water to practice some board paddling skills. As the
feedback from the participants was extremely positive Life Saving Victoria will be looking at conducting a
program like this twice a year, with one held in December and the second in February. These programs will
cater for deaf children from both schools and the extended Victorian community.
Our thanks goes to Lance Hately from Rosebud LSC who spoke to the participants about his experience in
being a deaf competitor in Surfboat rowing as a junior and now in masters. We also thank Joanne Davis and
her daughters, from Point Leo SLSC, and Jeannette Medcraft from Mornington LSC, who assisted with water
safety. Joanne also spoke with participants about her experiences being a deaf lifesaver.
                                                                                                         9
Protecting our Borders
The Australian Customs and Border Protection Service is responsible for protecting the Australian
community from illegal cross-border activity. While Customs and Border Protection is actively engaged in this
activity, the protection of our borders can be enhanced through the involvement of members of the
community who look out for and report suspicious activity along our coastline, in remote areas, and in and
around ports and marinas. Recreational clubs, such as the Point Leo Surf Life Saving Club, can play an
active role in protecting our borders by reporting suspicious activity. So while you are enjoying sailing,
camping or other pursuits, if you see something suspicious, report it. Suspicious activity should be reported
to the Customs and Border Protection Hotline on 1800 06 1800. The Hotline has received over 30,000 calls,
and has resulted in significant seizures of illicit drugs, illegal firearms, and endangered wildlife. So, take note
of anything unusual or suspicious that you see or hear, and report it. In doing so you too will be assisting in
protecting Australia. The Customs and Border Protection Hotline is operational 24 hours seven days a week.
To report anything unusual or suspicious, call
Customs and Border Protection Hotline on 1800 06 1800.
