READING GUIDE FOR THE GOSPEL OF MARK This guide is set up for use during the 40 days of Lent. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday ___________________ and continues through ___________________ the day before Easter. The 40 days do not include the Sundays between Ash Wednesday and Easter. This gives you a break each week, or an extra day to make up (in case you miss a day or two). Try not to get behind. If you do, please do not try making up more than two days at a time. Does 16:19 remind you of something we say in the Apostles' Creed? 6. Who worked with the disciples (16:20)? HELPFUL DEFINITIONS PHARISEES - A Jewish religious party during the time of Jesus. They were strict in obeying the law of Moses and other regulations which had been added to the law through the centuries. SADDUCEES - A small Jewish religious party in New Testament times, composed largely of priests. They based their beliefs primarily on the first five books of the Old Testament and differed in several matters of belief and practice from the larger party of the Pharisees. They did not believe in a bodily resurrection. ELDERS - Influential Jewish religious leaders, some of whom were members in the supreme council of the Jews. SCRIBES - Expert lawyers, who interpreted and worked on developing explanations of the law. In the day of Jesus the scribes had developed a complicated system of tradition to be sure people carried out the law correctly. HERODIANS - a group that supported the royal family of King Herod. They were concerned more about the political aspect of life than the religious. CHIEF PRIESTS - appointed leaders of the Jewish faith. Together they formed a council that set regulations and made religious judgments.
