                   Roosters out to claim Flag

The Northmead Roosters have wound up preparations for this weekends
post sectional play offs and are ready and raring to go.

The team went into camp on Tuesday night and despite concerns over a
certain member of the team possibly carrying the swine flu virus, side
manager Brian Burns reports all 14 squad members are in the right
frame of mind to bring home the flag this weekend.

“With the exception of Bonehead, all the boys are switched on and have
prepared really well for the game. The old fella has been a real nuisance
in camp all week, but that’s what we expected”, said Burns.

It is hoped that a big contingent of Northmead supporters will get along
to the games over the weekend and cheer them on to victory. With just
one side in the play offs the Wenty Leagues Ground Full sign will more
than likely go up, so get in early Rooster fans.

The club will be running the courtesy bus to Wenty Leagues over the
weekend and if you are interested, please put your name on the sheet
 on the notice board.

Spectators are urged to wear your club colours and get behind the team
as they hope to defend the grade 5 flag won last season. Wenty Leagues
has been a happy hunting ground in recent years, with our No.2 grade
 winning their just last season.

Selected Team to play Denistone East at 8.30am Saturday 13th June.

Third TOM MILLAN KEN BROWN KEN BARTLETT

                          Side Manager: Brian Burns
                      Selectors: Fred Lloyd, Mal Campbell
               Grade 5 – Player Profile
Scott Robinson (Robbo) – Yet to taste defeat this season and is on the
verge of being the first player to go through a season undefeated since
the great Percy Wilson from the Ashfield Bowling Club in 1912.

Terry Stephenson (Tel) – A Grade 5 winner back in 2006 who had the
misfortune of his room being next to Bonehead’s at Dubbo. Hopefully he
isn’t still carrying the scars of that trip and what he witnessed. Great
team player who can always be counted upon.

Tom Millan (Jockey) – Big Tom, not anymore. The former big fella has
been on fire this season and will have to step up again over the weekend
if the 5’s are to come home with the flag.

Len Joyner (Tiger) – Has been brought into the side to replace Bobby
Holt and has a huge pair of shoes to fill. Fortunately Lenny thrives on
pressure and is just the man to handle it. When you take on Jeff
Thomson on a green top with no helmet, playing bowls is not a problem.

John Spurway (John Boy) – Has had a great first season of bowls and a
win in the Zone play offs would be a great reward. Has put in plenty of
hard work and deserves to do well. The editor’s tip for player of the

Bruce Coggins (Coggo) – From BBQ cook to Pennant Winner in a season
(hopefully). The last man to do that was the great Bluey Johnson from
the Maroubra Club in 1944. The recent cold weather could pose a
problem for Coggo as he is strictly a shorts man.

Ken Brown (Mr Bowls) – What a season it’s already been for Mr Bowls.
Will add plenty of colour to the weekend as he lives and dies on every

Arthur Rudgley (Rudge) – Another finals series, another appearance
from Arthur Rudgley. Has had a great pennant season and has the big
game experience to get this side over the line.

David Wells (Junior) – Come into the side to replace David Swindail and
has the game to make a real impact. Another in his first pennant season,
but the big game atmosphere will bring the best out in him.
Grade 5 – Player Profile
Garry Smith (Hanso)– Can play in any position and do a great job for the
team. Says he enjoyed it more when Bonehead skipped (as he was at
the other end). Great team player who his team mates love to have
around. No pressure re the front cover Gaz !

Ken Bartlett (Bonehead)- The best reserve in the business. Selectors
again ignored his “reserve only” plea and he has played in every game
again this season. Has forgotten more about bowls than most people
know. Has vowed to get a “spa room” at Ettalong if they reach the state

Mick Kelly (Ned) – Pennant winner in 2006 as lead. Three years on and
he takes over the reigns as skip. Shouldn’t worry him as he has been
skipping from all positions anyway. A controversial character who loves
to give the mat away and has vowed to do so all weekend. No truth in
the rumour that he has had Fred Lloyd paint the target bowls template
on all rinks at Wenty.

Robert Cochrane (Rowdy) – Played most of the season in the fives and is
sure to get a run at some stage should there be a need for changes. Will
be there to cheer his mates on and is very much a big part of this side.

Mark Horan (Buster) – Buster is as keen as mustard to get on the
paddock at some stage this weekend, but will be just as happy to sit
back and watch the boys bring home the flag. Another of the “Tragic
Bowlers” in their first season and from what we have seen has a big
future at this club.

Good luck fella’s !

You have had a great season and win, lose or draw the whole club is
behind you all this weekend.

Betty Groves and Max Kissell the best and hope to see many of them back
at the club soon.

I’d like to thank Arthur Furness for his weekly reports to members on the
health of our many members and for getting out and visiting them and

Sudoku is coming to E-News
Sudoku is the number puzzle game that has taken the world by storm.
You will be using reasoning and Logic to solve the Puzzle.
Do not be mis-lead there is no maths involved.
The puzzle grid has numbers, but nothing adds up.
Prepare yourself for a great Challenge and some serious fun.
But Be Careful, every line across and down must be numbered from 1 to 9 using
every number in each column only once.

The name “Su Doku” is Japanese and roughly translated means “Single number”
The puzzle however is not Japanese origin,
Euler, an 18th Century Swiss Mathematician, created a simpler version called Latin
squares. Number Place was another relation, which was a first used in mainstream
US magazines in the 1970’s.
Sudoku first appeared in a UK magazine in 2004 And has since been a
phenomenally puzzle ever since.

How to play it.
The game consists of 3 puzzles across the page and 3 puzzles down the page
These are called regions. there is 9 regions in a game
Each region must have the numbers 1 to 9 used only once.
But the number must only be used once in each row, either down the page or
across the page and must not be duplicated in any row.

Using Scanning Techniques and the Pricess of Elimination, the right place of
missing numbers will become apparent.

The methods are all you need to get you started. Now, use your logic and reasoning
to solve the Su Doku Puzzles. As you progress, you will pick up new techniques
and possibilities to solve the puzzles. Prepare yourself for tougher puzzles, as each
one gets harder. Any finally, every puzzle is solvable, you shouldn’t use guesswork
