 POSITION TITLE:                     REGISTERED NURSE DIVISION 2 - MEDICATION
                                     ENDORSED

 LOCATION:
 RESPONSIBLE TO:                     MANAGER / DELEGATE
 ROLE ACCOUNTABILITY:

      •   Providing individual and appropriate quality care to residents, ensuring physical, psychological,
          social and emotional needs of each resident are fully supported.
      •   Administration of legally authorised drugs in accordance with Medication Endorsed Division 2
          registered nurse scope of practice including: schedule 4 poisons; schedule 8 poisons; or
          schedule 9 poisons; via topical and enteral routes only.
      •   Competent and safe administration of authorised drugs in accordance with legislative,
          regulatory, standards and best practice guidelines.

 MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS:

      •   Registered General Nurse Div 2 – Medication Endorsed with the Nurses Board of Victoria

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

      •   Certificate in gerontology or equivalent desirable.
      •   Certificate in Medication Administration of legally authorised drugs in accordance with
          Medication Endorsed Division 2 registered nurse extended scope of practice. Training to
          include the administration of particular medication through enteral, topical, subcutaneous and
          intramuscular routes within defined limits and Nurses Board Victoria guidelines.

   PROFESSIONAL & PERSONAL SKILLS:
       • Ability to direct, manage and participate in care teams supporting resident needs and achieving
         optimal resident outcomes.
       • Competent and safe administration of medications in accordance with Medication Endorsed
         Division 2 registered nurse scope of practice, legislative, regulatory, standards and best practice
         guidelines.
       • Ability to administer medication in accordance with the SCC (Vic) Residential Services
         Medication Management policies and procedures, Nurses Board of Victoria Guidelines for
         ‘Delegation and Supervision’ and ‘Extended scope of practice for Division 2 registered nurses to
         administer medications’.
       • Ability to administer particular medications in accordance with certified extended scope of
         practice via topical, enteral, subcutaneous and intramuscular routes within defined limits and
         Nurses Board Victoria guidelines.
       • Ability to undertake a broad range of roles and responsibilities with limited supervision.
       • Awareness of accountability for the provision of safe and competent nursing care and ensuring
         personal competence to provide care.
       • Responsibility and accountability for actions whilst remaining responsible to the Manager /
         division 1 registered nurse for all delegated functions.
       • Commitment to on-going professional development.
       • Ability to prioritise work according to the changing needs of the residents.
       • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

    •    In consultation with the Manager /Delegate, document changing care needs in line with RCS
         requirements.
    •    Administration of resident medications in accordance with the SCC (Vic) policies and procedures
         and all relevant guidelines, regulations and legislation.
    •    Accurate, timely documentation of residents’ care needs.
    •    Effective verbal and written communication skills.
    •    Ability to prioritise work according to the changing needs of the residents.
    •    Efficient management of resources.
    •    On a shift-by-shift basis, manage staffing requirements as per roster.
    •    Coordination, induction or supervision of other staff as may be required.
    •    Commitment to on-going professional development.

          fluctuations.

    •    Respecting and promoting dignity, privacy and confidentiality of each resident.
    •    Promoting facility and SCC (Vic) services in a positive manner to all stakeholders.


KEY ELEMENT 4. Team Development
                                  SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES

    •    Work collaboratively and under the guidance of the Manager / registered nurse division 1,3 or 4
         within the scope of practice and professional accountability standards of a registered nurse
         division 2 – medication endorsed .
    •    Coordinate, induct or supervise other staff as required.
    •    Acts as a role model for PCA’s and new staff.
    •    Attend and actively participate in relevant meetings.

KEY ELEMENT 5. Technical Skills
                                    SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES

    •    Responsibility and accountability for actions whilst remaining responsible to the Manager /
         division 1 registered nurse for all delegated functions.
    •    Provision of safe and competent nursing care including ensuring the safety and efficacy of
         nursing interventions.
    •    Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate resident care, including physical, emotional and
         mental assessments to ensure the resident is stable prior to any medication administration.
    •    Ability to recognise and report fluctuations in the resident’s condition and to report all fluctuations
         to the registered nurse division 1,3 or 4.
    •    Ability to safely, competently and legally administer resident medications in accordance with all
         SCC (Vic) policies and procedures, relevant guidelines, regulations and legislation.
    •    In consultation with the Manager /Delegate, document resident care needs in line with RCS
         requirements.
    •    Ensure staff compliance with SCC (Vic) Quality Management System & other relevant
         standards.
    •    Comply with SCC (Vic) competency assessment program as relevant.

KEY ELEMENT 6. Specialist Knowledge
                                    SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES

    •  Interest in and knowledge of best practice in:
                 Medication Administration and Management
                 Palliative care
                 Falls reduction and injury reduction
                 Diabetes
                 Dementia specific care and behaviour management
                 Arthritis
     • Knowledge of the ageing process and relevant diseases and an interest in maintaining this
       knowledge through available resources.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT REVIEW (CDR):

Performance shall be evaluated by the relevant manager annually or on request.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

•   Permission to conduct a police security check is required prior to appointment.
•   Attend yearly fire drill and be familiar with emergency procedures.
•   Maintain safe working conditions and safe working practices in line with the standards, policies and
    practices of Southern Cross Care (Vic) and requirements of the OH&S Act.
•   Carry out the policies and procedures of Southern Cross Care (Vic), as amended from time to
    time.
