 SURVEYS INDICATE SUPPORT FOR
  SMOKE FREE ALFRESCO DINING
 AREAS & OTHER CENTRAL PUBLIC
            SPACES
An independent business and community survey for the Council by Myriad
Research has shown there is strong support for the introduction of smoke free
alfresco dining areas under Council control and certain public places under the
Council’s jurisdiction.

Lord Mayor of Hobart, Alderman Rob Valentine said that the public areas
presently under consideration included Elizabeth Mall, Wellington Court and the
Hobart Bus Mall, as well as alfresco dining areas under Council control..

“Myriad Research conducted surveys with businesses and members of the
community in those areas under consideration. With the Business Survey of 163
questionnaires there was a 92.6% return rate with a clear majority of 63%
agreeing with the general proposition to make alfresco dining areas smoke free.”

“60% of businesses surveyed also agreed with the proposition to make other
public areas smoke free. Interestingly, 72% of the business owners in Elizabeth
Mall supported smoke free alfresco dining in that area while 66% of businesses
agreed that the Mall should be smoke free in its entirety,” said Alderman
Valentine.
“The strongest support for smoke free areas emanated from the general public.
A total of 334 questionnaires were completed with 75% of respondents in favour
of smoke free alfresco dining, while 57% supported making other public places
smoke free. The survey also found that people in Elizabeth Mall were equally split
in favour and against a smoke free Mall.”

The results of the survey were outlined to business during a meeting of the Safer
Hobart Community Partnership at the Hobart Town Hall on Wednesday 25th
November.

“A further report will now be prepared to look at a range of strategies for Council
to consider as to how the introduction of smoke free alfresco dining in areas under
Council control may be implemented, including the establishment of Elizabeth
Mall, Wellington Court and the Hobart Bus Mall as smoke free areas.”

“This will involve looking at the complexities of each option. The Council needs a
clear and coherent strategy to implement and support smoke free public areas.
There is also the need to consider suitable areas where people can smoke in the
vicinity of the Malls that is not going to cause discomfort to the majority of non
smokers,” said Alderman Valentine.
