Ian Baker-Finch

Ian Baker-Finch turned professional in 1979 and won the first of his 16 championships in 1983 at the
New Zealand Open in Auckland. His first major victory in Australia came at the 1987 Australian
Matchplay Championship at Kingston Heath. This was followed in 1988 by a stunning playoff win in
the Australian Masters where he knocked a five iron within a metre of the cup on the first playoff hole
to beat Craig Parry and Roger Mackay. Ian has a host of Australasian PGA Tour victories most
notably the 1990 Coolum Classic, 1992 Vines Classic and the Open titles of Victoria, New South
Wales and Western Australia.
Among his long list of credits, Ian has won tournaments on all four major tours, including the 1989
Colonial Invitational (USA), the 1988 ASO Open (Japan), the 1985 Scandanavian Open, and the 1993
Australian PGA.
Ian’s moment of glory came in 1991 when he won the British Open at Royal Birkdale Golf Club. His
final round 66 was one of the greatest ever in major championship golf and included an outward nine
of 29 where he birdied 5 of his first 7 holes. His final 36 hole total (64-66) is the best ever by an Open
Ian has now turned his hand successfully to golf course design, management and TV commentary in
the United States. His course design work includes the impressive Golf Club at Kennedy Bay
regarded by some as Australia's most authentic links golf experience. His golf course design
company has numerous projects under construction around the world with the Arabian Ranches Golf
Club in Dubai his most recent work.
Ian is returning to professional golf after a 5 year break to play the Handa Australia Cup in Perth!

2007 Handa Australia Cup Champion Jan Stephenson was the glamour girl of professional golf in the
1980s, one of the first LPGA stars to openly embrace and champion a sex-sells approach to
marketing. But the focus on her blonde-pinup looks sometimes overshadowed what was a world class
golf game.
While a teenager, Stephenson won five consecutive New South Wales Schoolgirl Championships in
Australia, beginning in 1964, and followed that up with three straight wins in the New South Wales
Junior Championship. She turned pro in 1973 and won the Australian Open that year. Stephenson
joined the LPGA Tour in 1974 and was named Rookie of the Year.
Her first LPGA victory was the 1976 Sarah Coventry Naples Classic but her most productive period
was the early 1980s, when she won all of her majors in consecutive years: 1981 du Maurier, the 1982
LPGA Championship and the 1983 U.S. Women's Open.
Stephenson became as famous for her sex appeal as for her golf during the early to mid-80s, when
she posed in a pinup calendar. She had big hair, bright makeup and eye-catching outfits, and she
urged the LPGA Tour to fully embrace her approach to marketing. There's no question she grew the
audience of the LPGA Tour during this time with her glamorous approach to golf - but many criticised
that approach. History now shows that she was ahead of her time.
On the golf course, Stephenson won three times each in 1981, 1983 and 1987, those wins in '87 being
her final ones on the LPGA. In total, Jan won 16 LPGA titles, including 3 major championships.
Stephenson continued playing LPGA events throughout the '90s, but was hampered by an injury
incurred during a mugging in Miami in 1990. Her left ring finger was broken in two places, an injury
that still bothers her play in cold or wet weather.
Stephenson is a founding member of The Legends Tour, the Official Legends Tour of the LPGA and
has won 2 Legends Tour events – 2000 Hy-Vee Classic and the 2005 BJ’s Charity Championship
(partnered with Cindy Rarick). She is also one of very few women in the golf course design business
and has been the recipient of numerous awards. Among her many charitable projects, Jan produced
an exercise video for people with arthritis as well as serving as honorary chairman of the National
Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Media and Spectators
Over the past 2 years the Handa Australia Cup has grown and attracted a great number of spectators
and media support throughout the Pro Am and tournament proper. In 2007 the tournament launch
(preceding the Pro Am) was covered by TV stations Channel 7, 9, 10, ABC and Fox Sports. Ian
Baker-Finch also conducted live interviews “pre round” with ABC, Nova 93.7 and Mix 94.5
We expect 2008 to attract even great attention with 2007 Champion Jan Stephenson returning after a
full year overseas, Ian Baker-Finch once again showing his professionalism and great charm on
course as well as Peter Senior the Chairman of the PGA of Australia joining the field.
