                                                           OVERVIEW
Word is probably the most popular Word Processing program in the marketplace today. It is found
most frequently as part of package of programs for the Office or Home use. Word 2007 is sold as
Word 2007 Student and Home addition, Professional addition and several other versions. It is sold
as a part of a suite of programs, which include WORD 2007, Excel 2007 Power Point 2007, and
Outlook Express 2007, called Microsoft Office.
Word 2007 Student and Home addition is the version that we will examine today.
                                                          INTERFACE
The interface is entirely new for those of you who are upgrading from Word 97-2003. The old main
menu line is gone and replaced by tabs at the top. If you click on any tab, Home, Insert, Page Layout,
References, Mailings, Review, View, and Add-Ins then a “Ribbon” will appear with many icons and
commands. We will investigate this latter. The old toolbars are for the most part gone. There are
many “Drop down menus” that are available on the Ribbon.
Note the small icon on the extreme right border of the tab menu. This is the Help icon. Clicking this
allows the user to have available many help subjects including those on the internet. The F1 key is
also available for HELP. The user can also find a page here that has a list of where Microsoft moved
all of the commands from Word 97-2003 when designing Word 2007” an Internet connection is
required for this.
                                                            FORMATS
There has been some confusion about the “new” format of Word 2007. It is called XML format.
People have told me that the earlier versions of Word do not understand Word 2007. Word 2007
can be saved as Word 97-2003 format and read by Word 97-2003.
Suppose you have Word 2007 and wish to send an attachment to an email. If the sender sends the
attachment as Word 2007 and the recipient has one of the Word 97-2003 versions of Word, then
the recipient will have difficulty “reading” the Word 2007 version. A fix for this is for the sender of
the email to save the document in Word 97-2003 format,(versions 97, 2000, 2002), and send in that
format. Now the recipient can read it, even if the recipient has Word 2007.
How do I know which format I am working with? On the top banner is the name of the document. If
the name includes [Compatibility Mode], then you are working in Word 97-2003 format. If this does
not appear then you are in Word 2007 format. If you are working in Word 97-2003 and wish to
convert to Word 2007 click the Office Button and click on CONVERT
SUMMARY: Users with Word 2007 can read Word 97-2003. Users with Word 97-2003 can not read
Word 2007. This is not exactly true because the Word 2007 will appear with some “garbled”
formatting in Word 97-2003.
                                             THE QUICK ACCESS BAR
The Quick Access bar is above the tab bar. The user can put almost any icon that they wish on this
bar for easy and quick access to a command.
