REVIEW (40%)
GUIDELINES AND CONDITIONS
Students should present a written response in the form of a review.
The response will:
provide an examination of the functioning of textual features and an evaluation of their
effective use within the selected text
identify criteria for making critical responses to a textual form and refer to critics
apply criteria to a single text and evaluate how effectively the distinguishing features of
that form are used
be supported with appropriate reference to the text
demonstrate clear, concise and correct written expression, and observe conventions
and structure appropriate to the review
Conditions
the response will be in the form of an academic (as opposed to ‘tabloid’) review
the review should be between 850 and 1000 words in length

ESSAY (60%)
GUIDELINES AND CONDITIONS
Students should present an essay which compares and contrasts two texts of different
textual forms that deal with a common theme/themes.
The essay will:
compare and contrast the use of distinguishing features of each of the textual forms in
exploration of the common theme
uses evidence from the texts to substantiate your analysis and interpretation
use clear, concise and correct written expression observing language conventions,
structure and referencing appropriate to the essay form
Conditions
the two forms may be chosen from the same area of study.
the essay must be between 1400 and 1600 words in length
students who choose performed or exhibited texts should view the text in the intended
context (eg cinema, gallery or theatre). they should then be encouraged to study the
text in a reproduced form (eg video, art book, script)
