Islamic Calligraphy from Beyat Gallery, Now Open in Khan Murjan at Wafi
One of the latest openings in the Egyptian quarter of Khan Murjan at Wafi
is Beyat Gallery which is considered to be the only gallery dedicated to
Arabic calligraphy in Dubai. For the opening, works from the famous
Egyptian artist Musaad Khudair, are being shown and he visited especially
for the opening.
Musaad Khudair was born in the northern-eastern Egyptian city of Bur
Sa’id year 1942 and was fascinated by the art of calligraphy from an
early age. His first teacher was his older brother Muhammad Khudair. At
the age of ten, Musaad participated in writing signs for stores and
various commercial markets in that city. He soon joined a calligraphy
school in the city of Tanta and earned a diploma in calligraphy.
Musaad moved to Cairo where he met and greatly benefited from the works
of a number of distinguished calligraphers such as Sayid Ibrahim,
Muhammad Husni, and Muhammad Abd al-Qadir. He also earned a further
calligraphic certificate from the school of Khalil Ali Agha. Musaad has
a studio in the traditional quarter of Cairo called “Hay Al-Jamiliyya”
where he works and contributes his calligraphy to various television
programmes. He writes in different traditional Arabic fonts and his
favourite scripts seem to be the “Diwani” and “Kufic” scripts. Musaad
was also commissioned to execute monumental Quranic scripts in the main
mosques of Cairo, Port Said and other Egyptian cities.
Musaad Khudair is considered amongst the most famous and creative
calligraphers in Egypt. He is the head of the Egyptian Society of Arabic
Calligraphy and represents his country as a judge in the International
Calligraphy Competition organised by the research centre for Islamic
History, Art and Culture, in Istanbul.
“Beyat Gallery blends in well with the Islamic theme of Khan Murjan with
its beautiful calligraphy work, especially that it is a unique gallery in
Dubai, offering only Arabic calligraphy,” said Victoria Smith, Group
Marketing Director, Wafi. “We are privileged that for the opening they
are showcasing the work of the talented Musaad Khudair. We are looking
forward to all the future calligraphy exhibitions at the Beyat Gallery in
Khan Murjan.”
Khan Murjan is a traditional souk with an Islamic theme and architecture
which is based on a 14th century souk in Baghdad and includes four quarters
– Egyptian, Syrian, Moroccan and Turkish. It provides 150 bazaar shops
with vendors from across the Arab world in a unique marketplace
environment. It is the ideal location for the Beyat Gallery as it is an
artistic haven in the heart of Dubai
