One week option available: Coupled with its turbulent and fascinating history and unique architecture,
Friday 23 October to it has to be THE artists dream with a painting at every turn! The entire
Friday 30 October 2009 city is based along a labyrinth of small streets, and we are lucky enough to
5 nights in Malta plus 2 nights be based for our stay where the true spirit and vibrancy of Valletta can be
 in Gozo: £1,095 per painter!
                                    viewed at its very best.
Our 5 nights in Valletta will encompass the famous sights of this magnificent, historical city, as well as
give you enough free time to explore the ancient streets and spectacular architecture of this fascinating
city steeped in history and atmosphere. Valletta is made for walking and many streets are made for
pedestrians only!

The remarkably central and convenient base for our exploration of Valletta offers spectacular panoramic
views of the Grand Harbour from its top floor restaurant/breakfast room. It is only a stones throw away
from the Upper Barrakka Gardens, the highest point on the 16th-century bastion walls which also
provides a magnificent panorama of the Grand Harbour as well as of one of the city’s most handsome and
most photographed buildings: the Auberge de Castille, a wonderful example of baroque which now houses
the Maltese Prime Minister's Offices.

As well as painting / sightseeing in Valletta we will also visit Marsaxlokk and Mdina, two very
contrasting locations where we will set up our easels and get inspired!

Marsaxlokk which is pronounced Marsa-shlock on the south coast of the island - is quite simply the
prettiest fishing village on the island. It also holds Malta’s largest fishing fleet, and the harbour, with its
multitude of colourful lazzus (traditional fishing boats), is a painter’s dream. A small market lines the
seafront and it is a haven for fish lovers with an array of good quality restaurants.

Mdina, the Silent City, is a time capsule of medieval palazzi and a world unto itself. As the capital
Mdina was the seat of power of the ecclestical, military and civil authorities. It was – and still is - the
home of the oldest Maltese families. Because of its commanding position on a high ridge that runs along
the south-west of the island, there have been settlements here since the Bronze Age. Within its
boundaries are grand palazzi, monasteries, churches, cathedrals and museums. Mdina is one of the
world’s finest examples of a medieval walled city that is still inhabited.

                                            Gozo (5 Nights)
It is only a short 25 minute ferry crossing to Gozo, and in stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of Malta,
it is an island of farmers and fishermen, which adheres to the solid values of those who live by the
elements. Despite its small size, the island gives an immensely diverse prospect for the painter.

Our 5 nights in Gozo will be based on the outskirts of the pretty Gozitan village of Xaghra, a mere ten
minute drive to any locality in Gozo! Xaghra’s (pronounced Shur-rah) main square is one of the most
attractive on Gozo, with old-fashioned shops, a good restaurant and a café bar.
Sailing into Gozo’s only port, Mgarr, gives you a concentrated view of all that makes the island special:
chapel, church spire and fort line the horizon, small flat-topped houses, tiny fields and greenery rise to
meet them, while at the water’s edge bob gaily painted fishing boats. En route you are sure to have a fine
view of the minute island of Comino. The flashes of limpid, turquoise sea are its famous Blue Lagoon.

Throughout our time on Gozo you will see why UNESCO wants to make it a World Heritage Site. This
tiny island includes the world’s oldest free-standing temple, unspoilt villages where the pace of life
is typical of Mediterranean lifestyle of years gone by and near-biblical landscapes. In the countryside, flat
topped hills rise out of valley floors, dry-stone walls contour every gradient and church domes crest the
skyline. The outcrops of limestone range from imperious grey through glowing russet to rich whipped
butter.

                              Painting Tutor – Frank Halliday

Frank Halliday was born in Yorkshire more years ago than he will admit to, and
has painted all his life. After following a successful business career which took
him all over the UK, he finally settled in Norfolk, where he has been able to focus
on his passion for painting. His love and enthusiasm for painting have drawn him
into lecturing, demonstrating and running workshops for those who want to paint
                        for themselves.

Frank has had one man exhibitions in Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Norfolk,
showing works in oils, pastel and watercolour. His paintings have sold
successfully to collections in Europe, America, Australia and throughout the UK.

Three of Frank's watercolours entitled "Norfolk Skies" have been published as limited edition prints. He
has written two easy to read books on watercolour painting, produced six videos on how to paint,
appeared on television, and even been featured in ‘Painting on the Radio’ for the BBC!

When he is not running Painting Breaks at his B&B in Felthorpe, near Norwich, Frank works
professionally for Winsor & Newton as a demonstrator, tutors workshops for Arts & Leisure Painter
magazine, and demonstrates at shows around the country. Frank’s dry Yorkshire sense of humour makes
every class or course that he runs a perfect delight, and you will have fun learning. Tuition will mainly be
in watercolour but also in other media as required. Tuition is usually arranged in day sessions that last
from 10am to 4pm, so there is time to relax before dinner and/or take in a sight or two!

                              Non Painting Partners & Friends
We have ensured that your holiday will include a strong flavour of Malta and every day will be different.
There is much to see and do with many wonderful places you will want to visit in both Malta and Gozo
which makes it a thoroughly unique holiday experience for both painters and non-painters alike. This is
an ideal chance to include your partners or friends in the fun!
                                           Accommodation
Castille Hotel - Valletta
Situated in the heart of Malta's captivating capital city our base in Valletta is the superior category ***
Castille Hotel. It was originally built as the residence of the influential De Robertis family originally from
Bologna, Italy, at the turn of the 16th-century. The hotel still preserves the elegance and beauty of a by
gone era and it is a million miles away from the very impersonal concrete tower blocks that blot some of
the Maltese coast.

The hotel offers the local charm that we wish all our guests to experience, in any destination we visit.
This is not just our opinion, but also that of previous guests of the Castille:

“The Castille is a hotel with real personality and charm, as well as a lovely staff. I loved sitting outside and
looking over the city while eating my breakfast... Malta is very special, and Castille, to me, is "true" to its
location.”

“I love the views from the roof-top restaurant, the great location, and the CLEAN rooms. The staff are the most
personable and helpful people I've ever met in a hotel -- and that friendliness is especially what will keep me
coming back. The Castille has been a 'home away from home’ for me…”

The hotel hosts two charming restaurants, the roof top restaurant which commands panoramic views of
the island's mainland and the majestic fortifications of the unique Grand Harbour, and La Cave Wine
Cellar and Pizzeria: both offer guests a wide selection of local and international cuisine.

All rooms are tastefully furnished with period furniture and fittings to blend with the building's
architectural beauty. Some of the rooms are augmented by a traditional wooden Maltese balcony. All
rooms are ensuite and equipped with individual air-conditioning/central heating, wall-to-wall carpeting,
radio, satellite TV and direct-dial telephone.

Cornucopia Hotel - Xaghra
One of the island’s top hotels; the **** Cornucopia Hotel is located on the outskirts of the pretty Gozitan
village of Xaghra, on a high ridge with views over the fertile Imrik valley over to Victoria and down to the
sea at Marsalforn. The hotel has been attractively converted from a traditional farmhouse into a 48 room
hotel.

With the bar and lounge area dating back over 300 years, the décor throughout the hotel is traditionally
Gozitan from the limestone walls to the arched restaurant with a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere
throughout. The Cornucopia makes a special feature of its grounds. Two freshwater swimming pools, a
whirlpool and a childrens’ pool are set among gardens and terraces. Accommodation at the Cornucopia is
in rustic finished spacious air-conditioned / centrally heated rooms. Singles receive a twin room for sole
use. All rooms have a balcony or terrace.

Meals are served in the stone vaulted ceiling restaurant. Breakfast is an enriched buffet, and dinner is a
mouth-watering choice of Gozitian and Italian specialities.
                                      Travel Arrangements
We can appreciate the convenience of flying from your regional airport and
it is for this reason we do not include flights in our holiday package.
Instead we prefer to leave you the freedom to make your own travel
arrangements. All schedule and charter flights arrive at Malta
International Airport at Luqa. Flying time from the UK is about 3 hrs 15
mins. An increasing number of low-cost airlines now fly direct to Malta
                             from the UK and Ireland:

Ryanair operate flights from London Luton and Dublin to Malta Luqa airport (www.ryanair.com).
Easyjet operate flights from London Gatwick and Manchester to Malta Luqa airport (www.easyjet.com).
There are also many other direct flights from UK regional airports operating year round, including
Belfast, Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, East Midlands, Leeds/Bradford, Newcastle and Norwich.

Malta’s national airline, Air Malta (in the UK, for enquiries, tel: 0845 6073710 or check out
www.airmalta.com) operates from London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London Stansted, Birmingham,
Manchester and Glasgow airports in Britain. There are no direct flights from long-haul destinations.
Guests from the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia can fly to London or Rome and take a flight to
Malta, but before booking it is worth comparing the cost of a cheap flight to London, and then a charter or
low-cost airline to Malta.

Wherever you arrive from you can be assured of a friendly welcome as we meet you off your chosen flight
at Luqa airport before transferring you to our accommodation, which is approximately a 30 minute
transfer. We do occasionally ask you to wait with us at the airport for other guests arriving on later
flights before being transfered however we do try to keep this wait down to a minimum (usually no more
than 1 hour).

If you are not confident booking your flights over the Internet, let us take the hassle out of organising
your travel – we are more than happy to arrange and book your travel for you. Alternatively, visit your
local travel agent and ask for flight only options to Malta. For guests arriving early or wishing to stay
on in Malta after the painting holiday we can recommend and even book accommodation at a wide choice
of hotels and B&Bs in Malta, a taxi journey to/from Valletta - to/from Luqa airport costs in the region of
25 euros each way. We offer a very competitive optional Sicily Add-On, 2 – 5 November 2009 (fully
escorted). Please contact us for further details.
