June 1 Study Guide This study guide includes a comprehensive review of concepts that will be covered on the June 5th test. If this study guide is completed and signed by your parents you will be eligible to earn unit points. 1. Describe the difference between porosity of rock/soil and the permeability or rock/soil. 2. Use the following data to solve the problem: - a piece of sandstone has the following dimensions: 6cm X 10 cm X 4 cm - 200 ml of water is in to the sandstone - 120 ml of water flows out of the sandstone What is the porosity of the piece of sandstone? SHOW ALL WORK How many cubic CM of sandstone would be needed to hold one liter of water? Would this type of sandstone be a good rock to drill a well into? YES/NO , Explain. 3. Give an example of a rock/soil type with the following characteristics: A rock type that is very impermeable would be ___________ or ___________. A rock/soil type that is very permeable is ____________________. A rock soil type that has very low porosity is _______________. 4. Draw a well labeled diagram showing how water is able to infiltrate rock/soil layer of earth. 5. Create a graph in the space below showing how you believe the height of the water table would change over the course of a “normal” year. 6. Draw a diagram with at least 4 different rock/soil layers. In the diagram complete the following: a. mark and label the water table b. make one of the 4 layers impermeable in a location favorable for drilling a water well. c. mark and label the unsaturated zone d. mark and label the saturated zone 7. What is an aquifer? 8. Make a list of the five most important questions you would ask any well driller before he/she drilled a well in your backyard for home water usage. 9. Go to http://water.usgs.gov/waterwatch/ What part of the water cycle does this image provide data of? 10. Using the same website in number 9, do you believe WI has any river at or near flood stage? 11. What state does contain a high percentage of its rivers at or near flood stage? 12. Using the same website click on Nebraska. Now click on the North Loup River at St. Paul. Using the graphs provided, list the date and time of day that this river began to see a major change in water levels and amount of water flow. 13. Explain why the North Loup River at St. Paul, NE saw such large changes in water levels. 14. Define the following: Runoff – CondensationEvaporationInfiltrationTranspirationPrecipitation- 15. Go to http://www.ametsoc.org/amsedu/dstreme/images/pwater.gif What data does this document represent? 16. Explain what is meant by “precipitable water”. 17. Print this document and color code the map the following way: Blue = all area in the US with PW values over 3.5cm Yellow = all areas in US with PW values less than 1.0cm 18. Go to http://www.ametsoc.org/amsedu/dstreme/images/rad_frt.gif This is a map of where precipitation is falling in the US currently. Is it precipitating anywhere in the US where you colored your PW map yellow? YES / NO Explain. 19. What are the four methods of determining population of a species in an area? 20. What is the formula for determining population density? 21. Look carefully at the examples below. For each example record the method of determining population that would be most effective. a. number of wolves in Wisconsin = ______________________________ b. number of citizens in the US = ________________________________ c. number of dinosaurs that lived in Dinosaur National Monument prior to extinction __________________________ d. number of oak trees in Appleton = _________________________ 22. Study the map of deer population density in Wisconsin and answer the following Questions: a. How many deer per square mile does the DNR report in management unit 39? b. Using the scale on the bottom of the map, calculate an approximate number of deer you believe are in management unit 39. SHOW ALL WORK c. Where in Wisconsin do deer population densities seem to be highest? Why do you believe this/these areas of the state carry the highest densities?
