BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING….

HAVE A GOAL!

The most important thing to think about before you start to market your short film
is: “What is my goal?” Do you want to market yourself as producer, writer or
director? Do you want an entry level job in the film industry? Do you want your film
to screen at Sundance or to attract international attention from distributors and
agents? Do you want to win prize money or sell the film to airlines and television
stations? All these are legitimate reasons to market your short film. There are literally
as many reasons and ways to market your short as there are to produce one.

HAVE A BUDGET!

The second thing a short filmmaker should lock down is a budget for marketing the
film. Dubbing costs, entry fees, designing and printing slick covers for screening
tapes or dvds, freight and postal costs can add up very quickly. Work out how much
money you are willing or able to spend and stick to it. Keep in mind marketing a
$5000 film can cost just as much as marketing a $100,000 one. Your marketing
budget is not usually a percentage of the production budget of the film, so draw the
line at what you can realistically afford to spend and tailor a plan accordingly.

GETTING A JOB IN THE FILM INDUSTRY

For many budding young filmmakers, producing a short film may be part of college
or university course work. The best way to utilise your short film is to use it as a
“calling card” to send to producers, production or post-production companies or
advertising agencies in New Zealand. Send a cover letter with your film as an
introduction and detail your long-term ambitions in the film industry. If you are lucky
enough to have your film screened at a festival, contact producers and production
companies and invite them to your screening.

A list of producers is available from the New Zealand Film Commission. Production
Companies are listed in the Databook, or try the yellow pages.

FILM FESTIVALS IN NEW ZEALAND THAT PROGRAMME SHORT FILMS

The most effective way to market your short film in terms of cost and exposure is to
target film festivals, competitions and screenings in New Zealand. Listed are some of
the festivals that are a regular in the New Zealand festival calendar. Other film
festivals pop up from time to time in most major centres, so keep track of what high
schools, fair and arts festivals are doing in your community. They may be looking for
content and have access to screening equipment. Alternatively, you could team up
with other short filmmakers or students and organise a screening for your films.

THEATRICAL SCREENINGS IN NEW ZEALAND

A theatrical sale is often the most difficult to secure. For financial reasons domestic
exhibitors are set up to screen feature films as many times as possible during a day
on a rotation. If there is a short showing before a feature, the cumulative effect can
reduce the number of screenings per day.

Theatrical short film releases must be negotiated directly with distributors or
exhibitors. Send a cassette of your film with supporting written material (including
brief synopsis) or arrange for a private screening for the exhibitor. Cast and crew
screenings are frequently a good time to achieve this, most particularly as you are
assured of an enthusiastic audience response.

DISCLAIMER: While every care has been taken to represent accurate information at the time of publication, the New

                                                                                                Page 4/16
Contact your local cinema if you have a short film of particular interest to a regional
area. Independent cinemas are often privately owned and may not have the same
time pressures as the multiplexes.

If you do negotiate a theatrical release with your local cinema you will need to
provide prints. 35mm is still the most preferred. Some independent theatres will
accept 16mm. It is unlikely that you will get any payment for a theatrical release so
consider the cost associated with supplying a 35mm print and how to finance this
before you approach an exhibitor.

INTERNATIONAL FESTIVALS AND SHORT FILM MARKETS

As there are literally thousands of film festivals internationally, it is really up to
individuals to tailor a festival strategy based on your goal and your budget. (Good
niche short films for example: gay or lesbian, made for or by children, Jewish,
fantasy/thriller subjects usually find a festival circuit). Getting into a major festival on
a niche circuit can almost guarantee other invitations.

The New Zealand Film Commission’s post-production fund lists long established
international festivals identified as being significant for short films on the festival
calendar. These festivals are extremely competitive and receive thousands of
submissions annually. If selected to one of these festivals the NZFC may assist with
finishing funds and travel. See the Short Film Post-Production Fund guidelines for
details on this website: www.nzfilm.co.nz

Short Film Festivals with Markets

Another effective way for buyers and distributors to see your film is to enter it to a
festival that has a short film market attached.

Clermont-Ferrand, France (Jan-Feb)

www.clermont-filmfest.com - One of the most established short film markets in the
world, Clermont-Ferrand has recently introduced a fully digitised short film video
library where buyers can watch every short film submitted to the festival.

SELLING YOUR SHORT FILM

GET SOMEONE ELSE TO SELL IT FOR YOU!

SHORT FILM SALES AGENTS/DISTRIBUTORS
Selling short films is difficult. Short films are usually produced with no broadcast
audience in mind or with any input from television programmers or marketers who
are able to “place” the film in a particular timeslot. Most short films, however worthy,
will never attract festival attention, or a television sale, let alone a theatrical release.
For the short film distributor finding a home for a non-saleable film can mean
financial disaster. Distributors or sales agents will prefer to pick up short films that
are under 10mins, funny and award-winning to exploit in every media worldwide.
The standard commission is between 35% - 50 % of all revenue after costs.

If you think your film has good production values and marketability in content or
style (animation and gay films can do reasonably well) send a short letter outlining
the selling points of your film with any reviews or press material that you have along
with a screener to a distribution company.

See distributors/sales agents list at the end of this guide.

TELEVISION

Sales of short films to broadcasters in New Zealand and internationally are controlled
by acquisitions executives or programming departments. As television is a dynamic
medium, programme trends and timeslots change rapidly. Sometimes short films are
programmed in half hour blocks and sometimes as interstitials. Generally, larger
television markets including Europe, UK and USA are more likely to acquire short

                                                                                                Page 6/16
films as cable channels proliferate and traditional free-to-air television and public
broadcasters are seeking product.

Following is a list of television stations that may acquire short films, check the
websites for accurate contact information. Send your screening tape or dvd with a
cover letter addressed to the short film acquisitions executive.

See buyers list at the end of this section.

DVD/VIDEO & INSTITUTIONAL

Dvds/videos are made available to the consumer either as a sales item or for rental.
Outlets selling videos include: The Warehouse and several large book chains such as
Whitcoulls. Decisions on stock are usually made at a head office level. However,
national distributors such as Village Roadshow in Auckland may be interested in
handling your film if it has clear commercial potential (minimum sale of 600 – 1000
units).

Local dvd/video dealers are usually rental only. Visit your local video outlet and check
out the films on the shelves. If you think the retailer might be interested in your film
as a rental item, send them a screener for consideration.

Libraries, art galleries, museums, schools, universities and other institutions buy
dvds/videos from time to time. Strongly themed or documentary works are often
more popular with institutions. Universities, polytechnics and other institutions may
prepare their own compilations of short films or run a library for students.

INTERNET

In many ways, the internet has become an actual screening outlet for short films.

There are now many sites where you can view short films by streaming on
broadband. These sites are constantly looking for submissions from new filmmakers.
Some act as sales agents and will offer monetary returns, but most are simply
offering you the chance to get your film seen.

Alternately, a lot of international short filmmakers are now creating their own
websites, from which their short films can be viewed, and information about
themselves accessed. If you’re using your short film as a calling card, this could be a
valuable tool.

NB. Short filmmakers probably shouldn’t consider releasing their films over the net
until after the usual festival outlets and sales agents have been exhausted. If a film
has been sold to television or on dvd is any territory there are probably rights issues
that should be addressed before broadcasting your film on the internet.

MARKETING MATERIALS

Materials and services are required to sell short films, and all buyers require
