_ SCOPE AND CONTENT

The papers of James B. Brady span the years from 1898 to 1939, although the bulk of
the material dates from 1898 to c. 1900. The collection consists of membership materials
from a veterans organization, a military discharge, photographs, and artifacts of James B.
Brady. Most of the material relates to Brady's service in the Hospital Corps of the 1st U. S.
Cavalry Volunteers (known as Roosevelt's Rough Riders) during the Spanish-American War
and his membership in the United Spanish War Veterans. Topics include the Spanish-
American War (1898) and the United Spanish War Veterans.
The material is divided into three series:
                 Series I: [Personal Papers, 1898-1939]
Series II: [Photographs, 1898 and undated]
                 Series III: [Artifacts, 1898]

         ACQUISITION
The papers of James B. Brady were donated to the Sharlot Hall Museum by Florence
         Brady Bryan in 1980.

^ BIOGRAPHY

James B. Brady was bom June 24, 1870 in Platte City, Missouri, one of two boys born
to Captain John and Florense Belt Brady. Following John Brady's service in the U. S. Civil
War, the family moved to Colorado. A contractor, John Brady then relocated the family to
Santa Fe, New Mexico Territory, where he built a reservoir.

James B. Brady was graduated from the Kansas City Dental College, the first in his
class. He received a cash prize which he used to finance both a graduation party and his first
dental chair. Having spent all his money, he was obliged to travel in the baggage car with the
chair on his return to Santa Fe.

Brady served in the Spanish-American War, where he was assigned as a steward of the
Hospital Corps of the 1 st Regiment of United States Cavalry Volunteers (known as
Roosevelt's Rough Riders). Following his discharge on September 15, 1898, he moved to El
Paso, Texas, and resumed his dentistry practice.
Brady was involved in numerous civic and governmental organizations. He served on
the El Paso City Council, the School Board, and the Police Commission, where he acted as
chairman for twenty-five years. Brady was appointed to the State Board of Dental Examiners
and the State Board of Health, the first dentist to be so honored. He was active in both the
         Masons and El Maida Temple.

Brady died in December 1941 in El Paso, Texas.
