INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
Hi, my name is Corey Augenstein and I am the Editor-in-Chief of the MLM Insider Online.
For over 16 years The MLM Insider has been the leading and definitive source of network
marketing information and education for millions of prospects and network marketers
around the world. We pride ourselves on being un-biased and totally objective in all the
information we provide to our visitors on our comprehensive website http://mlminsider.
com
The MLM Insider Online website features:
1. A Directory of MLM Companies with detailed information on each
company;
2. A Directory of Trainers; Training Tools; Attorneys; Lead Providers; MLM
Magazines; Card Decks; Audio/Video Producers; MLM Software Providers;
Watchdog Sites; Consultants; Trade Associations, Regulatory Sites;
3. A Comprehensive Library of Articles; Current News; Classified, Banner and
Press Release Advertising; Surveys and Polls; and Quizzes.
The fact is, no other website in the business offers what The MLM
Insider Online does. Just visit and see for yourself.
The MLM Insider is probably most noted for its “Annual Best
Companies in Network Marketing List”. 2007 marks our 13th
year publishing the list. Based on a number of factors, there are
an estimated 25 million plus of these lists in circulation throughout
the 13 years of publishing. What is really impressive are the
countless number of distributors who are now involved in Network
Marketing who made their decision on
which company to join using the Annual
Best Companies List and an article I wrote called “How to
Conduct a Proper Due-Diligence on a Network Marketing
Opportunity”.
Up until 2003 the list was published in a printed magazine
called NetWork Marketing Today - “The Best Companies
in Network Marketing”. In 2003 we decided to utilize other
distribution mediums which included both an eBook and CD
as the computer has become a more viable vehicle for getting
information out quickly and efficiently.
One of the more fun and popular additions to the Best Companies
Page #
INTRODUCTION
List release came in 1997 when we added what is
now called “The Distributor Choice Awards”
– Best Companies’ in MLM and “The Distributor
Choice Awards” – Best Generic Trainers’ in
MLM. Each year thousands of visitors come to the
MLM Insider Online website and vote for what they
feel is the Best MLM Company and Generic Trainer
in MLM. While it may be considered a popularity
contest, it still reflects on the great pro-activity of
distributors, and many times these same companies
find themselves, completely on their merit, on
my personal Best Company List. This of course
reinforces these particular opportunities as ones
to strongly consider getting involved with as a
distributor.
In the last Best Company release we added yet
another feature. Two Demographic Surveys directed
at Male and Female Distributors. These two surveys consisted of questions that tried
to pinpoint just who are the network marketers of today. The results provided are
invaluable for the marketing and recruitment efforts made by existing and future
distributors.
Many more features will be added in future additions. I know you will like what is in this,

ABOUT THE EDITOR
About the editor
Corey Augenstein founded The MLM Insider in 1991 as both an information/resource
and watchdog publication on MLM. The magazines true specialty was exposing the
negative elements of the network marketing industry with objectivity and integrity.
Corey’s actions and The MLM Insider contributed to the eventual demise of many MLM
companies by acting as a catalyst for lawsuits and distributor abandonment of those
companies. Due to his tenacity in exposing negative elements
in the business he was paid the highest compliment by then
Upline Magazine and John Milton Fogg who referred to him as
the “Ralph Nader” of MLM.
In 1993 Corey started what was to become the most
anticipated annual event in network marketing, occurring
at the beginning of each year. This was his release of “The
Best Companies in Network Marketing” reflecting what
he considered to be the top ten opportunities in network
marketing. In the 13 years since, an estimated 25 million
copies of these various best lists have gone into circulation.
In 1995 Corey coauthored with another industry expert, Len
Clements:
“The Definitive Guide to Understanding Network
Marketing Compensation Plans”
In 1995, Corey produced an audiotape based on his 1993 article titled: “How to
Conduct a Proper Due-Diligence on a Network Marketing Opportunity”
Also in 1995 with the advent of the Internet he started the MLM Insider Online Website
http://mlminsider.com which focused primarily on watchdog information and to some
extent on more pro-active subject matter on the business of MLM.
In 1997 Corey decided that some real nuts and bolts, positive sales, training,
education and other pertinent information vital to a distributor’s success were what the
marketplace demanded. Thus, the Network Marketing Today magazine was born and up
until the end of 1999 was published six times per year and had a circulation of 20,000
per issue. The MLM Insider on-line also became more pro-active and started around this
same time to focus strictly on the positive elements of network marketing by mirroring
the Network Marketing Today magazine.
In 2000 Corey saw the future of his business, as well as that of MLM, was going to be to
a great extent even more dependent on the Internet and he decided that more timely
information was needed and beginning in February 2000 he started publishing the MLM
Insider twice weekly newsletter which provided valuable training information.

HOW TO CONDUCT A PROPER DUE DILIGENCE
ConduCting A ProPer due-diligenCe on A network MArketing
oPPortunity©
By Corey Augenstein
Even though I first wrote this article back in 1993 (with many revisions since) I still can’t
escape the fact that its relevance today is just as important as it was back then and I
don’t make any excuses for using it still again in this years “Best Companies in Network
Marketing” E-Book. The article is very important, especially to those of you who are new
to the business of network marketing.
Despite all the years that have gone by, the fact
remains that the majority of prospects who get
involved in a network marketing company still fail to
conduct a proper due diligence on the company and
oftentimes go down with the ship.
This is inexcusable given the informational
resources that are now within easy reach thanks
to the Internet and the vast array of other
informational resources now available. One of your
major sources is of course The MLM Insider Online
but there are many others. Please refer to the many
resources available on the MLM Insider website.
Following are some suggestions that will give you
a huge head start on your due diligence and help
eliminate many companies from your consideration
while elevating others. Most of this information can be found out with minimal research
which won’t consume much of your precious time.
1. Company Age - Due to the high number of failures that occur in just about
any start-up business, I would suggest you avoid joining any network marketing
opportunity of less than one year in business. You might make the argument that
if this is the case there would be no network marketing companies. Yes, this is true
but let all those distributors pay for the companies’ learning curve and inevitable
problems that tend to crop up with new companies. Another thing is, never buy
the argument you will hear over and over that it is critical to get involved with
a company when they first start up. The fact is, if the company and its products
are good, then at any time in the course of joining a company be it one year, five
years or more after they launch you can become that big producer, hitter, earner
and all the other terms reflecting financial success, just as easily as you can be a
monumental failure. The only big advantage you may have with a start-up is the
possible excitement generated about that start up and the possibility of easier
Page #
HOW TO CONDUCT A PROPER DUE DILIGENCE
prospecting. In your case it may not matter much as you are still in a learning
situation and your prospecting skills will still be limited. Of course a great upline
can be of great help to you in these early learning times. Even so, I would avoid
start-ups except for the rare exceptions.
2. Management –It is very important that you only consider a company that has
a strong management, marketing and operations team with experience and
background in both network marketing
and traditional big business. There are
many companies which are started by
distributors who think because they
were so successful as distributors,
it is a shoe in they can be equally
successful as company owners. Sadly,
many have fallen on their face. Of
course, there are also many success
stories of distributor owners but these
individuals were wise enough to let
their egos go and surround themselves
with experts in the many specialty areas needed including: MIS Department;
Accounting; Product R&D; Marketing; Personnel; Legal; Warehousing; Advertising;
Distributor Relations; and so on and so forth.
3. Money - With newer companies this is critical as it now, in 2007, takes about
two million dollars to start a viable network marketing company depending on
a number of factors: product line; rent or purchase of offices and distribution
facilities; in house or contracted manufacturing; location of company; salaries;
legal; consulting expenses; adequate inventory levels, and a host of other expense
items. The bottom line, with newer companies’ monthly overhead will impact
survivability until there are enough customers and distributors to offset these costs
and create profitability. Therefore, having money in reserve to carry the company
is very important. Now you ask how I can find this out. Alas, this is going to be
difficult as most network marketing companies are private.
One thing you can do is ask them straight out. If they
are legit, most will actually answer this question. And it is
always best if you can visit them as this will tell you what
kind of investment has been made.
4. Support - Very important to your success. Support will
come from two sources: The Company and your upline.
Both are very important and the more the merrier.
The Company Support - I would want to have as much
corporate support as possible including dynamic and
replicated websites, newsletters, telephone and video
conferencing, voice mail, brochures on all the products,
Page #
HOW TO CONDUCT A PROPER DUE DILIGENCE
clear explanation of the compensation plan, conventions,
quality marketing materials, educational DVD’s, audios,
and seminars. In the past it was touted that a company’s
main purpose was to provide you basic materials and
that was that. No more. Companies often compete for
potential prospects through what they offer in terms of
support.
Your Sponsor and Upline Support– Technically
these are the same, but it is kind of a misnomer. Your
sponsor is just that, the person who sponsors you into
the business. Your upline will include your sponsor and
everyone else above them. From my sponsor/upline I
would question them all as to what they will offer me
before signing on the dotted line and allowing them
the privilege of your participation. Too many prospects
sign up with the first person who tries to sponsor
them. DON’T!!! You need to shop around for the best
sponsor and upline. Now, your potential sponsor may
be a newbie like yourself but you like them and can work with them which are
good reasons for them to be your sponsor. However, it is unlikely they will be
of any help in the more critical area of support. Therefore what is really most
important is your upline leadership. You know that big hitter way up there. That
is the important person. What kind of help are you going to get from them!!! In
a nutshell it should be substantial. They should be out there working non-stop
helping out their downline since in a real sense you are their bread and butter.
Many of the top distributors actually make more money from training and support
tools than they make in commissions from the company. I find nothing wrong
with this especially if the materials are beneficial to your growth and success as a
distributor. Nevertheless, there are many upline leaders that fail to support their
downline and it is my opinion to ask for their help or request the company to allow
you a lateral move under a leader that will help you. I
have seen many distributors request of the company
a lateral move to another group all because their
upline was failing and not supporting them. Now what
is truly great about this business is you may become
a big hitter/leader as well and then provide the kind
of support hopefully you received from your upline. I
have seen more distributors than I can count rise to
the top and become leaders themselves.
5. Education – Before I was to join a company, I would
probably try and expose myself to as many of them as
I could. Go to opportunity meetings, allow yourself to
be pitched and so forth. I would also take the time to
Page #10
HOW TO CONDUCT A PROPER DUE DILIGENCE
read some books on the subject.
6. Products – This, while being subjective, is in actuality probably the most
important consideration for you getting involved with a company. Most of the time
you are introduced to a company by way of their products. You try them, get a
positive result, become a retail buyer and the next thing you know your supplier
is urging you to become a distributor so you can buy the products at distributor
pricing. Makes sense. Of course!!!!. Hold your horses right there. You still need to
go back to #1 on the list if you decide to become anything more than a consumer
of the product. Better safe than sorry. There are many companies out there selling
very similar products so I might want to try a few of them to see. You may be in
a better position with another company (whose product also
works for you) to achieve that success. I would take a number
of products from a few different network marketing companies
but I would never join with any of them if I didn’t like some
important aspect of their business model.
7. Distribution – It is far better to get involved with a company
that distributes in as many US states and operates in as many
foreign countries as possible. The reason being, this opens
up a bigger market to prospecting and sponsoring people
assuming the company will allow this. Many companies have
different compensation programs in foreign countries which
may exclude participation of distributors from other countries.
8. Legal – You need to check out if the company has been subject to legal filings
against them by governmental agencies such as the FTC, FDA and State Attorneys
General. Also, very important is how the company treats their distributors.
Some companies find ways of terminating distributors once they start making
too much money or those on their way up. Most
of these distributors won’t be able to fend off this
kind of action. However, there are more and more
attorneys willing to represent distributors and take on
companies for the types of action that are often illegal
and in the companies best interests only.
9. Trade Association Membership – I guess
membership in a trade association such as the DSA – Direct Selling Association is
a good thing even though it and other trade associations typically have only the
companies interests at heart and not yours.
10. Compensation Plan – Most network marketing company compensation
plans will pay individual distributors somewhere between 4 – 9% of the
distributors total organizational volume. So if a distributor has $100,000 in
volume it is safe to say that the distributor will earn on average around $7,000
Page #11
HOW TO CONDUCT A PROPER DUE DILIGENCE
in commission plus bonuses which might
add an additional 2% or $2,000. Most
companies will payout overall to all
distributors between 35% - 55% of the
companies total sales volume with most
hovering around 45%. The most important
thing to keep in mind is “it takes products
to sell in order to generate commission”.
You can be with a company that might
argue and brag it pays distributors 25% on
their organizations volume but they have
a product that no-one wants to buy or
sells for a ridiculously high price. So 25%
of nothing is nothing. With compensation
plans you have to read between the lines.
I can’t and won’t tell you what plan to get
involved with but I might suggest you find
a middle weighted plan. Remember, all plans have their pros and cons. You might
want to refer to the many articles on compensation plans that can be found on
the MLM Insider website in the articles section to further your education on this
important subject.
11. Miscellaneous – Other things to check out: Are commission checks being
paid on time? Are products being shipped on time? Are there any back orders on
products? How often do they occur?
12. Investigation – Finally as a last resort, if you really want to know what and
whom you are getting involved with then you might want to hire an investigative
agency to check out the records of the principals of the company. There are many
misrepresentations made by company executives about themselves and their
company and here is a way to expose their truths and lies. Don’t know if this
has any relevance to whether the company or you will succeed or fail but it is an
option.
Well there you have it and yes there are probably a number of other things you can
do in your investigation but most will involve common sense. My final suggestion
is please don’t take “conducting a proper due-diligence” for granted. You are
making a decision that may shape your financial future, your family, your happiness
and therefore should be taken very seriously.
I wish you all the very best of success

ComPAny info: USANA Health Sciences continues to grow and affect network marketing
in a positive way by setting a stellar example of how a company can and should be run
in network marketing. USANA Health Sciences is a publicly traded
company that manufactures and distributes pharmaceutical-

nutrition bars & shakes, and an anti-aging skin-care line
based on cellular nutrition. Their skin-care line, SENSE, contains
an exclusive, patent-pending, self-preserving formula that eliminates the use
of traditional paraben preservatives. As I have said many times before, everything about this
company comes off first class and the company seems to be a shoe–in every year for the
editors’ list and the reasons are simple. USANA is a company that represents: quality not
quantity; Ethics not schemes; and excellence not mediocrity.
It has won for the th year in a row, “The Distributor Choice
Award Best Company” for 2006 – 2007 and for the lucky 13th
year in a row appears as an MLM Insider Editor’s Choice

was in bed thinking about the delivery challenges into your body occurring with traditional pills
and capsules and the fact their coatings may or may not get broken down in the body properly for
absorption. On the other hand liquids must be shaken and taken immediately for proper absorption.
Athletes use “gels” to pound carbohydrates right before competition or in the middle of a race. So
Glens question was: “What if anyone could pound nutritional supplements in the same way—when it’s
most convenient for them”? “Could a highly accessible delivery system like the one athletes use be
versatile enough to work with other consumable products”? Out of all this he came up with the answer
for “bioavailability” and launched with AGEL a powerful new delivery mechanism called
“Suspension Gel Technology”. And because he knew network marketing inside and
out, he knew it was the right vehicle to get the product to the most consumers in the

DON’T DILIGENCE
due diligenCe of A network MArketing oPPortunity
is only As good As the Questions you Ask - or don’t Ask.
By Leonard W. Clements © 2007
It is an unfortunate fact that conducting a proper due diligence of an MLM program, before joining it, is
a rarely performed process. Even those few who attempt it do so in such a way that they are begging
to be misled. Due diligence is one thing - a proper due diligence is quite another.
There are four ingredients to a profitable,
enduring network marketing opportunity: A good
compensation plan, a good product line, a good
company, and a good support system. Alas,
many decisions as to which MLM program to join
involve little more than adding up the percentages
in the compensation plan brochure. The bigger
number wins. Any other contrasting, comparing or
appraising of MLM opportunities mainly involves
prospective sponsors playing “dueling hype.” The
prospect asks each potential success-suitor to
basically tell them everything they want to hear and
they all eagerly oblige. The one who spins the best tail of multilevel utopia is the victor.
“We have the highest quality products that sell themselves, the most lucrative, revolutionary
compensation plan, the easiest most duplicatable system, and the company is debt free and about
to go into momentum.” There is it. Every MLM prospecting pitch ever given. I’m sure you’ve heard it
too. But, when your sponsor said this, did you ever ask “How do you know?” Or better yet, “How can
I know that all this is true?” Without asking this question, without digging deeper to discover the truth,
you can only accept it all on blind faith. So, the first step is to challenge your prospective sponsor
to sponsor your due diligence process. Enlist them. By all means, give them the chance to back up
their superlative claims with tangible, verifiable, historical, mathematical, or whatever type of proof is
necessary.
This is the point where many soon-to-be network marketers who think they’re conducting due
diligence fall back on what are utterly useless questions. For example, “Can I really make money at
this?” an actual question I’ve been asked so many times. Or, this more sophisticated sounding but
just as useless of a question: “Is the company positioned for long term growth?” Or, “Do the products
work?” Or, “Is your system duplicatable?” My first grade teacher once told me there are no dumb
questions. I now wholeheartedly disagree. Why ask a question when you already absolutely know the
answer is going to be an enthusiastic “Yes!” Wouldn’t a better question be, “How can I make money at
this?” Or, “What is your duplicatable system?” Or, “Is the company growing?” and if so, “How do you
know it is?”
Of course, this is only the first step to a proper due diligence. Asking your prospective sponsor to
Page #
DON’T DILIGENCE
validate their positive statements is important, but you still have to validate their validations.
There have been many articles written about how to evaluate an MLM program. Most list basic,
seemingly common sense actions such as; call the Better Business Bureau, call the Attorney
General’s office, get a D&B credit report on the company, study their financial statements, find out
what the top earners are making, are their testimonials or scientific studies to support the product
claims, and so on. In a perfect word, where all this information is available and accurate, a proper due
diligence would swift, easy and simple.
This isn’t a perfect world.
Let’s take these one at a time. First, a BBB report is essential. However, don’t put so much weight on
the number of complaints as you do to the number that have are unresolved. It’s better to have 0
amicably resolved complaints than to have ten unresolved. Of course, it’s even better to have none.
Yes, you should call your state’s AG`s office, but more
importantly you should call the AG`s office of the state the
company’s corporate office is located. Usually, if any other
state were to close them down, they just don’t do business in
that state. If their home state closes them down, their probably
done. Also, keep in mind that most AG`s offices will only tell
you if a formal action has been taken (but not about open
investigations). Most will also tell you the number of complaints,
if any, that have been filed. But beware. Some states, such as
California, lump complaints and inquiries (such as yours) into
the same total. And, again, place the emphasis on how the
company has handled the complaints, not just the raw total.
Personally, I’ve found Dun & Bradstreet reports to be generally
unreliable (and not cheap) and would not recommend this step.
D&B typically reports information supplied by the company. The
type of MLM Company that you would most want to avoid is the
one that would lie to Dun & Bradstreet. Right?
Studying a company’s financial statements would be an obvious step if it wasn’t for the fact that less
than % of all MLM companies are public companies. And you can bet the private one’s are not going
to show you their books. What’s more, you have to know how to read a financial statement. Once
obtained (go to www.sec.gov, do an “EDGAR” search for the company and pull up their most recent
10k), don’t just jump to the bottom line (net profit). Read all those pages of text. There’s usually very
interesting, and very revealing information in there (both positive and negative). Also, don’t just look at
last year. Go back at least five and look for trends.
The financial or sales data you get from the company or its reps (outside of SEC filings) are usually
ripe with hype (which the dictionary defines as “to increase artificially”). One company recently
claimed to have “record revenues” for the previous quarter. Although the statement was technically
Page #
DON’T DILIGENCE
true, their SEC filings revealed that almost half of that revenue was assets the company was selling
off. Remember, revenue is not the same as product sales. Yet another company recently claimed to
have “record sales” for the quarter. Again, the claim was technically true, although the company also
reported its first “net loss” in its history. Clearly, net profit is more important than sales.
Probably the most common and most abused financial claim is to be “debt free.” Understand,
NO network marketing company is truly debt free, nor would they want to be. First of all, accrued
commissions and bonuses is a “payable.” It’s debt. Does the company really have none of this? I
hope not. Furthermore, debt can be good and very useful. Without it you may not be able to establish
credit terms, which the company may desperately need in the future. Or perhaps the company is
“debt free” because they have a poor payment history and can’t establish credit. How do you know?
What if the company experiences strong growth? To have the inventory, staff and infrastructure to
handle 0,000 distributors when you only have 10,000 usually requires taking on some debt. Debt
also frees up liquid capital to grow and expand the business, or to weather down turns. How much
debt a company carries is a better question, not whether they have it or not.
Earnings related questions can be the most misleading of all. First, to provide earnings data without
numerous other disclosures can be deemed a “deceptive trade practice” by regulators. To use your
or another’s earnings as an inducement to join an MLM program is considered taboo. Those who
practice it are putting their opportunity at risk. Also, this is basically useless information as far as
your ability to earn an income. Comparing the incomes of individuals from different MLM companies
to determine which one you want to make your living from is like comparing the sugar content of
a single grape from two different orchards to decide which one you want to make your wine from.
Besides, most prospects want to get involved with an opportunity before it gets really huge, yet many
are seduced by huge incomes which can’t be developed until huge growth occurs! This creates a
paradoxical search criteria.
Due diligence of product claims is
tricky. First of all, as far as disease
treatment claims make sure
there aren’t any! Even personal
testimonials are not safe haven.
The company is still liable and may
be required by the FTC to provide
scientific substantiation of the claim.
Even if they could, the FDA could
then step in and declare the product
an “unapproved new drug.” So,
certainly test the products and see
if they work on your ailments, then
make sure no one is saying it will.
Like I said, this one’s tricky.
Unfortunately, space limits me to only a brief survey of some of the “don’ts” of doing a proper due
diligence. To really do this subject justice would require about a 0 page analysis (and does, in my
Page #
DON’T DILIGENCE
book Inside Network Marketing). I hope you’ve at
least gleaned from this article the idea that doing a
proper due diligence first requires that you do some
digging, and that there are right and wrong places to
dig.

BEGGING TO BE MISLED
begging to be Misled
By Len Clements © 2007
If you ever want to determine the level of honesty and/or MLM savvy of the person
trying to sponsor you, the best question you can ask is the worst question you can ask...
How much money will I make?
If your prospective sponsor even begins to try to give you a
definitive answer to this question, or worse, further defines the
amount of time it will take to get you there, they either A); are
a naive rookie that honestly doesn’t know any better and is
likely just repeating the same garbage they were recently fed
by their sponsor, or B) they’re making up garbage on their own
and feeding it to you in an effort to tell you what they think you
want to hear.
I can’t count the number of times a prospect has asked me for
a specific income expectation. Or, as just occurred recently,
a prospect will state their income goal then ask how long
they’d have to work to achieve it. In this most recent case,
my prospect wanted to make “$5,000 per month” and asked if
that was “possible” within six months. I then inform them that
their question is impossible to answer, knowing full well that my competition is likely
responding with an enthusiastic “Absolutely!” Why is it impossible to answer? Let us
count the ways.
Such a question is kind of like stating the algebraic equation Y+T+L=5,000, then asking
what Y, T and L equal. Mathematically, this would be impossible to answer. Nor is it
possible in MLM.
Y=You. Your ability, your efforts, your personality, your contact base (or “center of
influence”).
T=Them. Those you enroll, and those they enroll and they’re abilities, effort, attitudes,
and contacts.
L=Luck. Call it serendipity, call it fate, call it divine intervention. Call it what you will, but
call it something, because it counts.
If you were a talented high school basketball player looking for a college to sign with,
would you ask each recruiter how many NCAA championships you’ll win? Of course not,
because he’d have to predict the Y, the T (in this case it stands for Team), and the L
factors.
Page #
BEGGING TO BE MISLED
Even you can’t accurately predict what you will do, how well
you’ll do it, how fast you’ll get better at it, how you’ll react to
failure (or success), and how long you’ll wish to do it. So how can
your sponsor possibly judge this?
An even greater wild card is what others will do. You can control
what you do, but you can’t control what others do. Nor can
you even begin to predict how well they will do and how soon.
I know someone who’s been working the same MLM program
for over three years, has personally sponsored 55 people, and
not one has done a thing. I know another person who, just two
months after joining my downline, enrolled a couple who built a
leg over 900 people over the next three months. These are good
examples, albeit extreme, of how unpredictable the success of
others in your downline can be.
The Luck factor accounts for everything else. The more regulatory conscience reader
my wince a bit on this point, so let’s be clear I’m not talking about luck in the sense
of a lottery or gambling, per se. I’m talking about that intangible factor that helps us
success in any type of business, or in life for that matter. Was it skill or effort that put
John Lennon and Paul McCartney in the same neighborhood as children? Or that caused
a stage hand named Clint Eastwood to catch the eye of a famous director? Obviously,
talent was eventually a factor. But how many very talented people never succeed
because they just couldn’t get a break? There’s quite a few in MLM as well?
There’s also just the opposite situation. I know someone who was the number three
earner in a very large MLM company, yet openly admitted to having little knowledge
of MLM, and only a handful of personally sponsored people. Fortunately for him, one
of them was the number one earner in the company. You might enroll 100 people in
your MLM career, and three will develop into superstars and make you wealthy. And
they might be the second, third, and fifth person you enroll or the 94th, 97th, and 99th
person you enroll.
There are external factors to consider. You could have done the exact same things, in
the exact same company, using the exact same tools, in 1998 (the midst of our most
recent MLM slump) and had twice the success had you done them in 1991 (our last MLM
boom). As I attest in my cassette/CD “The Coming Network Marketing Boom” we are
coming out of that most recent slump and on the verge of our next boom, so this factor
looks positive for everyone right now.
I’ve heard more than one wealthy MLM’er claim “The harder I work the luckier I get” in
an effort to sarcastically discredit the luck factor. No, the harder they work, the more
effectively they enhance the influence of Y and T in the equation. There’s still something
to be said for knowing the right people, being in the right place, and at the right time.
Page #
BEGGING TO BE MISLED
And all of this isn’t even considering
the more tangible factors such as the
products, company, support system
and compensation plan of the specific
opportunity you’re considering. All of these
factors, and especially comp plans, tend
to perform far differently in actual practice
than they do on paper. How closely each of
these factors are represented in relation to
reality varies significantly from company to
company and from sponsor to sponsor.
This is also not even factoring in the issue
of net income vs. gross income. Who cares
if you succeed in earning five grand in six
months if it costs you six grand a month to
do it? Okay, so $5,000 in profit then. Well,
is that $15,000 gross income and $10,000
in expenses, or $5,500 gross and $500 in
expenses? The less you put into building
the business the less you can expect out
of it. It’s reasonable to assume, as in any business, the greater your budget, the faster
you’ll reach your profit goal. I’m often asked, “So how much should I budget each month
for my MLM business?” My answer is always, “The most you can comfortably afford, but
not a penny more.” I have no idea what that number is for each prospect, and more
times that not, neither do they!
I’m certainly not suggesting you can’t make $5,000 in six months in MLM. All I’m saying
is don’t ask if you can. You’re just begging to be misled.

BEST COMPANIES LISTING CRITERIA
best CoMPAnies listing CriteriA
Welcome to the Editor’s Selections of the Best Companies in Network At the end of this important
Listing Criteria are the actual results and a list of the companies that I consider to be the top ten in all
of network marketing for the calendar year 00.
For those of you new to network marketing, The MLM Insider is and has been considered by
industry experts to be the definitive and objective information resource on network marketing. For
over 1 years we have been delivering objective and valued information and education to millions of
prospects and networkers worldwide.
Since I got involved in the network marketing business in 1, I have seen it go through enormous
growth, change and challenges to its very existence. This is why it is imperative to conduct as careful
and detailed evaluation of a company as humanly possible before getting involved.
There are literally thousands of companies purporting to be Network Marketing companies but in my
opinion, probably less than 00 could meet the basic parameters for what constitutes a legitimate,
bon fide network marketing company, and furthermore, one that will be able to endure the competition
and other growth inhibiting factors.
These parameters include:
1. Adequate operating funds on-hand to cover daily operations (one months out);
. Funding for Research and Development;
3. Formal administrative offices with departmentalization;
. Adequate sales, and marketing literature;
. At least months of Product Inventory;
. Physical warehousing and shipping facilities;
The fact is, it takes huge money to start an MLM company and even then the competition is brutal.
Based on my personal consulting and discussions with other start-up consultants, we are still in
agreement that it now (year 00) takes a minimum of $ million dollars to start a viable network
marketing company. You might say aren’t there better businesses to start or invest this kind of money
in and I’d have to agree network marketing would probably be way
down on my list. This is why most of the new companies popping
up from what I’ve seen are either absolute junk or they tend to be
a breakaway of sorts from an existing well established company
by one of their more successful distributors and may have a
chance. The fact is, some of the hotter and most successful
companies of today were started by distributors previously
successful with another also successful company.
Network Marketing like traditional companies follows a growth line
Page #
BEST COMPANIES LISTING CRITERIA
Now what may even surprise you more is I could only find about 25
companies I thought could be candidates for my Best Companies List
for 00.
Of these companies most of my evaluation was generated from
consulting with other experts, looking at corporate websites, and talking
to distributors and management. I then used the following criteria for
determining who would make the list.
1. Management
. Products
. Compensation Plan
. Support
. Longevity
MANAGEMENT
Despite great products, compensation plans and support, far too many “What could of been great”
MLM companies fail because of inexperienced, unfocused or ego based management. A very good
friend of mine has already been involved on the corporate level with two companies that failed
because of lousy management. Sadly, these companies had all the other ingredients for great
success.
I am a firm believer that any network marketing company should be run by a seasoned CEO or
President with a combination of mainstream corporate world and network marketing experience.
Staff should also have specific experience direct to a network marketing company or have the ability
to be well trained. I cannot count how many MLM companies have bit the dust due to a successful
distributor who felt he or she could start their own company and be equally successful. Their giant
egos, management inexperience and inflexibility often got in the way and they eventually ran their
companies into the ground. Of course there are a number of success stories, but these companies
are run by people smart enough to surround themselves with true experts. Unfortunately though, by
and large most distributor run companies are doomed to failure.
PRODUCTS
Products are of course a very important criterion. Products fuel the program and if the products
aren’t any good, it is unlikely that the company can succeed. However, for this selection process, I
have to look at the products very loosely. I have personally taken products of companies that have
generated tens of thousands of positive testimonials and hundreds of millions in sales yet in the
majority of cases, I received no noticeable benefit. Nevertheless, I would still strongly consider being
involved with these companies for the opportunity (if I was looking which I am not). I presently have
a major health issue and in the past years I have taken a wide variety of network marketing health
products but so far none have helped to any discernable extent. Nevertheless, these same products
which are from wildly successful companies have done wonders for other people with equally serious
Page #
BEST COMPANIES LISTING CRITERIA
health aliments. Different strokes for different folks as they say. In any event, I will continue to try the
products of different MLM companies’ in hope of finding ones that help me. So I might suggest that
you also keep an open mind and try and find a company that has a product or products that is of
benefit to you. But, if you don’t find one I wouldn’t necessarily pass them by and suggest you consider
them for the opportunity side. Look at all the ingredients with the company as to the potential benefits
to others. There are many successful distributors that are with a company for the opportunity and not
the products. Keep this in mind especially with the companies you find mentioned in this eBook (even
though they represent some of the best selling products in all of network marketing)
COMPENSATION PLANS
Without a doubt compensation plan criterion was another very important aspect of my evaluation.
Network marketing companies are quite masterful at creating compensation plans that look good on
paper yet are mostly unworkable in reality except for the super
high achievers. This is part of the big game to lure distributors to
the opportunity. To be blunt, distributors can be pretty lazy about
conducting their due-diligence and with that comes an extreme
ignorance about compensation plans. They end up being attracted
to companies because of the strong and often misrepresented
presentation relating to the compensation plan. Fortunately more
and more distributors are falling for the hype as much as they use to
and are starting to do some homework. Companies previously rock
solid have been put under extreme pressure by their own distributors
and severe competition to improve their compensation plans. I know of
at least two companies that lost their largest distributors because they
played around with the compensation plan and reduced commission
opportunity.
In my evaluations, I tired to focus on companies that provide a good
income opportunity that is fair and achievable with good effort. The plan should have
enough of a balance to provide good frontside, middle and backside money making opportunity. A
plan like this helps reduce attrition. While some of the companies on the list this year have less than
spectacular plans, most meet my criteria of fairness and who sad this business was easy. For most, it
takes hard work and effort. Remember, plans are not designed to give away money. Might I suggest
you go to the MLM Insider web site where there are numerous articles on compensation plans. You
can get a very important and must needed education.
SUPPORT
There are two major sources of support when involved with a network marketing company. The
support coming from the company and that found in distributor ranks. Without question, any prospect
considering being involved with an opportunity must strongly consider both. My focus in the selection
process was strictly based on the support the companies offered. This included their marketing
materials, sales aids, hot lines, teleconferencing, web conferencing, training, corporate meetings,
contests, conventions, web site, public relations, etc….It is obvious the more support that is available
Page #
BEST COMPANIES LISTING CRITERIA
the easier promoting the business can be for you the distributor.
LONGEVITY
As part of my evaluation process using the aforementioned criteria, I also
put some emphasis on longevity. Will these companies be around in 1, , 10,
1 years. Sort of predicting the weather yet I feel that my selections will be
around for a long time or at worse merge with other companies for competitive
reasons.
CONCLUSION
This is a really fun business especially if you are making money. Everyone
wants to be sitting up front at the conventions. To the victor goes the spoils
and networkers with money know how to have fun!!!! The real beauty of
Network marketing is that it is a true democracy where a person with literally a few bucks and lots
of fortitude can become rich in a short period of time. Only real estate or the lottery offers the same
opportunity. The only issue is which company to do this with? While more companies than you can
count continue to launch there are very few that will be around in even six months. Many of the
companies on my list have been around for years and the reason for this is they are doing it right.
They have paid their dues and have solved the riddle. So my suggestion to all of you seeking a
network marketing business to hang your hat on is:
1. Be patient;
. Look at my suggestions;
. Study, read articles, educate yourself;
. Ask your potential sponsor and the company lots of questions;
. Study some more;
. Try products;
. Go to meetings
. Have fun.
Most importantly, approach this as a business with your future in mind. It is not a game. It is a
business that can be lots of fun. Don’t get caught up in all the hype as this can cloud your vision and
objectivity in selecting the company that is right for you. And, don’t let anyone ever steal your vision.
Finally, I would strongly suggest that if you are truly looking for a great opportunity to be involved with,
you take a very close look at the 10 companies that have made my Top 10 list for 00. Spend some
time learning all about them, and see which one may be best for you to get involved with.
Best of Success

Company is a relatively small company in distributor number and

get most of the press and word of mouth attention.
However, there is absolutely nothing small about the character,
integrity, products and management of Amazon Herb. It is huge in
those areas. A company that more than most is committed to your
personal health and lifestyle goals. It is a company that through its

ComPAny info: USANA Health Sciences continues to
grow and affect network marketing in a positive way by setting a stellar example of how a company
can and should be run in network marketing. USANA Health Sciences is a publicly traded company

everything about this company comes off first class

the editors’ list and the reasons are simple. USANA is a company that represents:
quality not quantity; Ethics not schemes; and excellence not mediocrity.

MLM IGNORANCE
if you go through your MlM CAreer with blinders on,
sooner or lAter you’re going to get blindsided
By Leonard W. Clements © 2007
Ignorant does not mean dumb or stupid. Ignore -
ant. That is, to ignore readily available facts,
thus resulting in a lack of knowledge, not a lack
of intelligence. Let’s be clear on that right away
lest I offend anyone who finds themselves guilty
of the acts and practices described in this article.
For this article is going to delve into what is
surely one of the most common factors resulting
in not only failure, but in many cases utter
devastation, both financially and emotionally. I’m
going to attempt to defy human nature (a result
of millions of years of evolution – I’m not saying
it’s going to be easy) and cause you to
reevaluate your MLM choices from a logical,
rational, educated perspective.
The now cliché’ definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and
expecting different results. It astounds me as to how many folks I see fail at building an
MLM business, then go right on to do the exact same things in their next business. Or,
worse yet, join a quasi-MLM opportunity with more red flags sticking out of it than the
Russian Consulate (out of ignorance as to what defines and illegal pyramid), then when
it crashes and burns – they jump to another deal that is almost identical!
Why? Well, here’s where the human nature part comes in. We are, as a species, drawn
towards the opportunity to get something for nothing. We don’t want to go to the gym
and work out, or eat less fatty (thus delicious) foods; we want to take a pill to lose the
weight. We don’t want to work for our money, we want to win the lottery. We, not all,
but millions of us, believe in psychic healers, fortune tellers, and yes, pyramid schemes.
All in spite of the Everest size mountain of evidence that they don’t really work. Yet, we
still believe. Because we want to believe, so badly. The idea of ridding someone of all
known disease by a touch on the forehead, or of someone telling you what your future
holds (for $3.95 per minute), or – that you can be a millionaire in 90 days by buying
some tapes for $1,000, is just so compelling, so awesome. Don’t confuse me with the
facts because I have to believe this!
You would think that a little common sense, logic, and rational thinking would make the
evidence pile unnecessary. Yet both appear to be powerless against that allure of
“something for nothing.” If a pill or potion really cured literally everything (as some
marketers will attest, and no, I’m not exaggerating), then wouldn’t this product be front
Page #1
MLM IGNORANCE
page news all over the world? Wouldn’t the inventor of the
product be at the head of a ticker tape parade on his/her way to
receiving their Noble Prize? Wouldn’t this mean that the average
lifespan of a human would now double, with all that that entails?
Yet, what would appear to be the single greatest scientific
breakthrough in human history is not only not being marketed by
the pharmaceutical company that won the multi-billion dollar
bidding war for the rights to it, it’s being marketed, with little fan
fair, via only medium to small multilevel marketing companies.
And thousands of what appear to be intelligent, rational people
are buying these products. Or, more specifically, buying into the
pitch.
Same goes for money games. If you could really get rich by buying $1,000 worth of,
whatever, why aren’t we all rich? If it was really that easy, that simple, that quick, why
aren’t we all doing it?
What we can and can’t say about our products, and what defines an illegal pyramid
scheme, is knowledge that every network marketer should have, yet few possess – in
spite of the numerous, easily accessible, totally free sources of this information. A
company with over 50,000 reps was recently shut down for alleged illegal pyramid
activities (among other things). Yet, over the months or years that these good folks
were putting their heart and sole into this business, the information that would have
revealed the legal vulnerability of this company was less than 5 minutes away the entire
time. A few clicks of a mouse is all it would have taken to avoid possible financial and
emotional ruin.
But they had to believe.
Where is this information? All around you. Want to know what limitations the FDA and
FTC place on our product claims? Why not ask the FTC and FDA? It’s that simple. Always
has been. The FTC will tell you at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/buspubs/
dietsupp.htm. The FDA will tell you what they’ve told others at http://www.fda.gov/foi/
warning.htm. Read, then reconsider your company’s product presentation. Are they
(you) vulnerable? Now you will absolutely know. No more questions. Ever.
Want to know what defines a pyramid scheme? You don’t
need to be an MLM expert, or lawyer, or Attorney General
to figure it out. The qualification is so utterly simple. Just
ask the same question that the FTC asked of Amway in
1979. Can the last person still make money? Not only is it
that simple, I’m not even paraphrasing legalese. That’s
literally the question the court asked (obviously, in the
case of Amway, they said Yes). The ignorant position holds
that you can’t be a pyramid scheme as long as you have a
Page #
MLM IGNORANCE
legitimate product. Yet, every single company that has
been attacked by a state of federal regulator for pyramid
violations has had some kind of product. Some, like
Equinox and Jewelway, had great products. The trick is,
it’s not the presence of a product that matters, it’s the
motivation for buying them that regulators look at. In
other words, if only distributors are buying the products
and few, if any, can realistically mark up the products and
retail them to non-distributors, then the last person in
can’t make money. If recruits are the only one’s buying
the product, then you have to keep recruiting to make
money. If the distributors are buying the products
because they actually want the products, that’s fine too.
Ask yourself, would most (not just a few, but the vast
majority) of these people still buy these products if there
were no income opportunity involved? If the answer is
NO, don’t touch. And just because a company pays on
legitimate, retailable products, doesn’t mean they can
pay on distributor training or enrollment fees as well. Just
because all the commissionable products are retailable
doesn’t mean you can buy $5,000 worth just to qualify for the Platinum-With-Diamonds-
In-It Presidential Executive position in the compensation plan, or that the primary
motive for joining might still be the hype attached to their compensation plan or
recruiting system. And just because other companies have been getting away with it
doesn’t mean yours will.
Sure, there is the occasional shade of gray which requires a little research and studying
to interpret. But like I said, the resources are everywhere, and they are easy to
understand. Check out www.mlmlaw.com or www.mlmatty.com for everything you ever
wanted, or could know about what defines an illegal pyramid. My own site at www.
marketwaveinc.com has an abundance of such information.
There is also an abundance of good, qualify, legally sound network marketing
opportunities to choose from. They’re not
hard to find either. They’re the one’s that
don’t make ridiculous claims about their
products, which people are actually buying
because they like them. They have merit
based compensation plans, and they’re
training and support systems involve, God
forbid, doing some of the work yourself.
That has been the formula for long lasting
financial success in this industry for over
65 years. Nothing will ever change it.

MLM IGNORANCE
If every network marketing distributor
were to spend no more than two hours,
total, doing nothing more than perusing
the five web sites listing in this article,
pyramid schemes could be wiped off the
face of the Earth forever, and not one
person would ever again see their
family’s livelihood crumble into a pile of
regulatory rubble. But, alas, at least half
would read it all, then ignore it. It
wouldn’t support what they want to
believe.
It’s just human nature.
