Opening remarks: What is the plan?
When can I get my hands on D2L?
May 1st (date not set in stone)

Summer –
o Pilot group (actually using live courses) – how do you get in the pilot group?
       Volunteers
How many people will be in the pilot group?10 or 15
Fall –
o All courses have to be converted during the fall semester.
o WebCT will be turned off at the end of December.
We will not be able to get to your old course backups!!!!!!!
Your old course backups do not import directly to D2L. They need to be first
restored to a WebCT course and exported.
o All online courses will be taught live in D2L and anyone else who is ready.

Training –
o Spring 07 – demonstration type training in test courses.
o Summer 07 – hands on training in own courses without enrolled students
      (everyone)

Fun Stuff!!!!!
o You Choose how to move your course from WebCT to D2L
o You can import your entire course into D2L using the pre-existing
structure. This may/should? take less time. Depends on the structure of
               your WebCT course.
o You can import your course in parts (content modules and quizzes) to
               D2L.
o You can take the time to rework your course from scratch restructuring old
               course content and adding new.
o You can link to specific discussion boards (topics), drop boxes, and quizzes from
      within the course content.
o Discussion boards/topics can now have individual release criteria
o More advanced grading systems can be EASILY set up in D2L

Preparing Your Course for Conversion (Poster)
   1. D2L organizes links to your course files in an outline form with link. It is best to
reduce the number of links in WebCT to a specific file before exporting your
      course content.
       Why?
D2L will create a section in your course outline for each of the following WebCT
       tools:
           o WebCT Course Menu links
           o WebCT Organizer Page links.
           o WebCT Content Module links.
If you have linked to a single file from multiple locations (once from the course
menu and once from an organizer page and/or once from a content module) D2L
will create links to that specific file in each of those sections. This will be
       confusing to students.

   2. This is a good time to throw away unused files for two reasons: 1) D2L does a
better job importing exported WebCT files that are smaller. 2) Why confuse
yourself by bringing in old unused files that you will need to sort through later.
          a. Throw away zip files
          b. Throw away old syllabi, etc.

Conversion Types
Full Course Export From Within Your WebCT Course –
  Instructor
Pros
o All course content files should be brought over from WebCT.
o All links to course content that were linked to from WebCT’s course menu,
organizer pages, and content modules should be maintained in your D2L course.
   o
Cons
o D2L may make multiple links to the same course file – will need to delete the
multiple links so students will not be confused by them.
o You will need to rearrange links in the course content outline.
o You may need to recreate content found in WebCT Organizer page text boxes.

Export Only Content Modules and Quizzes - Instructor
Pros
o Multiple links to the same course files will not appear in D2L
o Allows you to specify specific modules to export
o Organizes WebCT Course Module content in one folder.
o Unused files will not be moved over to your new D2L course.

Cons
o You may need to recreate content found in WebCT Organizer page text boxes.
o If you did not link to certain course files from a Content Module you will need to
move those files over to your D2L course separately and then create links to them.
  Export Files Only - Instructor
Pros
o This method provides you an opportunity to look through all course files, rework
old files, and throw some files away that you no longer use.
o This method provides you to reorganize your course and rethink how you teach it
since none of the course structure will be imported.

Cons
o This method takes more time
o You will need to recreate all links to your course content.

Command Line Course Backup – FITC Staff
Pros
o This method is best if you have lots of files in your course that take up a large
amount of server space. (High quality images, video, audio, etc.)
o All content should be moved from your WebCT course to your new D2L course.
o All links to course content that were linked to from WebCT’s course menu,
organizer pages, and content modules should be maintained in your D2L course.

Cons
o D2L may make multiple links to the same course file – will need to delete the
multiple links so students will not be confused by them.
o You will need to rearrange links in the course content outline.
o You may need to recreate content found in WebCT Organizer page text boxes.
