General Statistics Office
 The General Statistics Office (GSO) is an
 agency under the direct authority of the
 Government of Viet Nam, with the
 functions of management in the field of
 statistics and the provision of socio-
 economic statistics to every agency,
 organization and body in accordance with
 the Government’s regulations. It collects
 data for regular reporting, conducts
 censuses and sample surveys.
GSO Data Collection
Regular report system:
   State enterprises report system
   Report system for government bodies which
    manage administrative records (customs, finance,
    education, health, ...)
   Report system for local statistics offices
   Population and housing census: 1979, 1989,1999
   Agriculture and rural census: 1994, 2006
   Economic census: 1995
   Non-state enterprise census: 2001-2004

   VLSSs were implemented in 1993 and
    1998 in Viet Nam with financial support
    from UNDP and the Swedish
    International Development Agency
    (SIDA), and with technical support from
    the World Bank.

VHLSS 2000 – 2010
(Vietnam Household Living Standards Surveys)

      During 2000-2010 GSO conduct
       Vietnam Household Living Standards
       Survey every two years: 2002, 2004,
       2006, 2008 and 2010.
      In these years, a core module will be
       conducted. Every four years or more,
       additional modules will be conducted.
The VHLSS 2000 – 2010 (Cont.)
Core module topics:
 Basic demographic information on all
  household members: age, gender,
  relationship to head, marital status
 Household expenditures on food,
  education, health, etc.
 Household income:wage and sarary,
  farm production, nonfarm production,
  remitance, etc.
 Employment and labor force
 Education: literacy, highest diploma, fee

   Health: use of health services, health
   Housing: type of housing, electricity,
    water source, toilet, garbage disposal

   A commune questionnaire, that collects

       Detailed information on agricultural
        activities and non-agricultural household

   The VHLSS 2002 covered only core
   Sample size:
       75,000HHs in 2002 (of which 30,000
        expenditure HHs)
