IMAGINE • Imagine if you just moved to Calgary with a family of six, still searching for a job in this economic crisis, and a few days later your house burnt down, all your furniture and belongings burnt to bits. • In order to seek help you need either a computer to sign up, or transportation. • We have seen this, it HAS happened and it IS real. • Maybe you can find a cheap place to live, but what is the next step? How do you get a bed, or a sofa, or even a microwave to have the few canned items you got from the food drive cooked. • There is an organization that can help. Feed A Need • Feed-A-Need registered non profit charitable organization within the city of Calgary that seeks to connect those who wish to give to those who are less fortunate. • Ranging from single mothers and large families immigrating to Calgary, to those who currently reside in Calgary barely being able to afford basic necessities. • Feed a need is a unique organization that provides furniture and basic household items and the transportation to get it to struggling Calgarians. Feed A Need (cont‟d) • This organization has been working for this cause since 2006. With Calgarians (especially businesses/corporations) gaining knowledge of this charity and possibly reaching out their hands to help, it can reach greater lengths than it already has. “The reason we are called Feed-A-Need is because we are trying to help the people of society one by one; if we wished to help every single one it would be Feed-„the‟- Need, small miracles is the first step to helping poverty as a whole” -Al Mohammed (Feed-a-Need founder) A look back - Accomplishments • Successful 3 to almost 4 years. • Many milestones achieved. • Tremendous growth. • Served to thousands of families. • Established links to other organizations such as CUPS, the Calgary Board of Education, Bridge Foundation • Achieved official “Charity” status. • Success in attaining a functional warehouse operation. • Have learnt “Success has a price to Pay”! What price? • Despite the lack of volunteers, growth increased. • Switching from a warehouse to another on top of our already busy growth created immense stress (short of manpower). • Overestimated reliance on those that promised to get events and fundraisers going. • Many meetings were attended for funds for charity registration which turned out to be in vain, and lagged far behind. • Going over the minimal budget (due to lack of funding). • Meeting deadlines while trying to operate day to day tasks. We Need You! To reach our goals and make a difference… Overview • Despite a certain level of support, there are still many obstacles in Feed-A-Need (FAN) being able to attain its full potential, and overall goal. • This and severe weather has led FAN to a point where we have almost stopped. • Insurances cancelled, and 1 truck running. • All pick ups and drops offs almost come to a hault. • Quick action has to be taken, spread the word DONATE! • Break-even expenses are still at approximately $3000.00 • Let‟s all work hand in hand and get results. Main effects • Pick up and drop offs very “erratic” (caused stress & strain) • Could not keep in touch with all meetings of funding or attend for grants and other giveaways (got broke). • Could not keep up with promises made to families, or fundraising/event organizers for funding (shortage - funds). • No Human Resource Manager (paperwork mishandled) • No Bottles and Cans Coordinator (shortage of clients & funds) • Weak facility and storage, • The shortage of funds resulted in a non-heated leaking warehouse hard to maintain, which discouraged the few volunteers we had, and directed the attention to the problems rather than the organizations goals. • Overall there was a turn for the worst, and it needs to be fixed. Minor issues • Feed‟s phone number changing too often. • Person handling tasks changing too often (volunteers). • Person handling task can‟t accomplish in time. • Truck not serviced in time. • Straps either lost or knot tied which make trucks them useless. • Broken and damaged items cluttering warehouse. • Unable to get resources for items in the warehouse (e.g. plug outlets, nails, tools…etc) How to fix it • RELATED BUSINESS-Open a related business facility (cost between 1500 to 2500 monthly). • PAID CONSECUTIVES-2 reliable people to be hired to do all pick ups and drop offs (cost between 2000 to 3000). • VOLUNTEERS-Find volunteers from out sources and not from the need list wanting to repay the organization that helped them. • ORGANIZATION-Find 15 leader volunteers for tasks. • REVENUE-Grants, funds, events, fund raising, increase revenue from organizations that can fund the settlement of the needy so we can concentrate on helping as many as possible. Volunteers and retention Related business will have the facility to: • Almost full time volunteer portal for duties. • Have in house corporate meetings. • Volunteer meeting & training. • In house accounting and bookkeeping. • Meetings with corporate need list users. • Meetings with donors. • In house telemarketing staff (volunteers). • In House truck ads telemarketing staff. Revenue • Increase our revenue from pick ups and drops (donations). • Increase revenue from items we normally say no to for to transfer to related business. • Increase revenue for dump items. • Picks and drops will be daily instead of weekend picks only - decrease the need for immense storage. • Current storage will be easy to sort and distribute from. • Increase family viewing with organized storage. • Increase revenue from sales at related business. • Increase revenue from bottle and can regular pick ups. • Increase revenue from grants and giveaways.
