One of the most fascinating stories of a company that makes custom
seats is Corbin. This company, unlike others, was formed by accident,
or should I say opportunity met with action - Luck?
The founder of Corbin motorcycle Seats Company, like many other
riders even today, was met with a problem that Corbin didn't want to
wait for another company to solve.
This company was started during an era where motorcycle seats were
only available by the manufacturer and there weren't many
innovations, as of yet, surrounding a solution to this problem.
Motorcycle seats were originally designed to hold the rider on the
bike, keep them comfortable while riding, and to offer the rider
maneuverability when on the road.
Not much thought was put into comfort, dissipation of the severe
vibrations the motor causes in the entire motorcycle frame and seat,
or sadly, safety.
The basics were there and for the most part- at the time - people
made due but Corbin wanted more. He wanted the perfect ride, the
safest ride, and especially the ability to take a 100 mile trek then get
off the bike without dealing with numb body parts primarily the legs,
thighs, and bum.
Corbin did eventually build his perfect seat, and he's been building
them every since. A funny story about Mr. Corbin was how he came to
sell his seat designs.

He was on his way to a rally in New Hampshire and decided to test
drive his new design. When he got to the rally he was so comfortable,
and one of the only people not complaining about the "long ride".
Many people became curious and before long he was the talk of the
trip. At the time he sold his prototype for $40.00 to a fellow rider, and
at the same time he took orders from other riders for custom Corbin
motorcycle seat designs for their bikes.
The amazing comfort people felt made word of mouth advertising one
of the company’s best ways to get the word out. Before long riders far
and wide were seeking Corbin out to ask him to build them a seat like
the one their friend had or a new design from suggestions.
It wasn't long before he realized that there was a booming market out
there and took advantage. He started to create dozens and now
thousands of amazing designs. Other companies followed suit, either
in whole (starting the same type of company, one being the second
best aftermarket seat company out there Mustang motorcycle seats)
or in part (building pieces that eventually end up in the latest high tech
seat design).
An example of a third party seat part product would be the widely
used Gel materials. Many different gel products have come out and
have been invented specifically for motorcycle seats. There are a few
really good gel products that are used in seats to cushion the body,
absorb and dissipate the constant vibration, and even help in creating
a more ergonomic design for the seat itself which also boosts comfort,
especially on log rides.
Corbin motorcycle seats spawned an industry that would become a
nexus of help in one of the previously most neglected parts of the
bike- the seat!
Corbin continues to lead the way in new and innovative technologies,
and like the Mustang Company, they have a bonafied bond with their
