Kwantlen Web Site Development Quick Guide (Using Active CMS) 1. Logging In Log in at http://cms.kwantlen.ca using your Banner ID and password (123456 by default) Click on My Page if necessary to change your password and other personal info. Click Save after making your changes 2. Creating Your Site i. Find Your Site Click on My Sites > Kwantlen to get access to the main navigation Menu Navigate through the Site Menu to find your page ii. Creating Your Page Create a new (Child) page: ***Note: A parent page is any page within your web site that has pages below it in the web site hierarchy (there are pages listed under the Child Pages tab). Child pages belong to a parent page and appear on the Child Pages tab of the parent. Child pages can be created for all page types. Navigate to the page that will be the “Parent” of your new page – for example, the main index page of your site. Click on the Full Edit button Marketing & Communications Department July 23, 2008 Example: Marketing and Communications: Note: If you do not see the edit buttons located on a page, you are either not logged into the CMS or you do not have editing rights for that page. o Select the Child Pages tab, and then under New, select General Content 2. Marketing & Communications Department July 23, 2008 o Give the new page a descriptive title in the Title: field, then enter a “web friendly” name in the URL Title: field (for example, about_us – note the use of lowercase and underscores). The HTML Title field may remain blank. o Ensure that the Content tab is active, and then in the HTML ONE field, add textual content, images and links as necessary. You’ll be shown how to create links and add Digital Assets (images) below. o Click the Emergency Publish button when finished. o If you don’t wish to make your changes live, click on the Publish button instead. Tips: Save often! Use the buttons at the top of the HTML ONE field to make text bold, etc. – much in the same way you’d use Microsoft Word to edit text. Use CTRL+M to create a new paragraph. iii. Edit an Existing Page Click on the Full Edit button o Make any required changes and additions to existing text in the HTML ONE field. o Add images and links as necessary. You’ll be shown how to create links and add Digital Assets (images) below. o Click the Emergency Publish button when finished. o If you don’t wish to make your changes live, click on the Publish button instead. Adding Links Select the text you want to make into a link Click on the Create Link button In the resulting “Insert Link” dialog, select either the Internal Link or External Link tab, depending on whether you’re linking to a page within Kwantlen’s Content Management System (CMS), or an external site. o If you’re adding an Internal (Kwantlen) Link, select a title from the list displayed, using the [+] sign as necessary to open a sub listing. Click the Insert button to add your link o If you’re adding an External (non-Kwantlen) Link, enter the site’s URL in the Address: area Marketing & Communications Department July 23, 2008   Enter a title such as the page’s name in the Title: field Click the New Window option in the Open In: area and then select the Insert button to add your link v. Quickly Adding Digital Assets (Images, etc) Click on the Insert Digital Asset button In the resulting “Insert Link” dialog, select either the Browse or Add tab, depending on whether you’re inserting an existing asset, or uploading a new one. o If you’re inserting an existing asset, browse to the appropriate folder, using the [+] sign as necessary to open sub folders.  Select the image you want to insert and click the Insert button. Marketing & Communications Department July 23, 2008 o If you’re uploading a new asset, make sure the Add tab is selected (below).  Click on the Browse button next to the Upload: field and browse to the location on your computer where the image you want to upload is stored, select it from the list and click Open.    In the Name: field, enter a name for the image, such as “myphoto.jpg” (without the quotes or any spaces). Enter some descriptive text in the Alt Tag: field, for example, “my head shot” (again without the quotes). The Assign to Folder: field is very important. This is where you tell the content management system (CMS) to store your image. July 23, 2008 Marketing & Communications Department Select the arrow next to the words “Digital Assets” and use the resulting dialog to browse to the location where you’ll be storing your images; for example, your_department > images and then click the Insert button. o The procedure for adding PDFs (Acrobat), Word documents and PowerPoint slide shows is the same as it is for adding images, but you’d save the files to your_department > pdf, and so on.
