Report on September Lunch

The September lunch at Bury Lodge was generously sponsored by Hewitsons,
one of the largest law firms in the Eastern Region, which is described as a
„regional heavyweight‟ by the renowned Legal 500 guide, which also gives the
firm top or lead rankings in 26 specialist areas of the law. Mike Kelly of
Hewitsons gave us an interesting and entertaining talk on the planning laws in
the context of development of the M11 corridor. As usual it was a convivial
occasion at which we saw a number of new faces and two, Martin West and me,
who had attended the inaugural lunch in November 1997; last minute pressure
sadly prevented, a third, Guy Schooling, from attending. Although on occasions I
have been unable to attend a lunch, I have never had to cancel one which means
that we have been lunching together every other month for the last ten years –
not bad!

Apart from myself, 60 members booked in for what was our 60th lunch which
created some sort of symmetry. We shall have to wait to see whether, taken with
our 50th, it is perhaps also the beginning of an interesting arithmetic progression
– we had 50 members at our 50th lunch! Together with some 50 apologies for
absence, the augers for future support are encouraging as we launch into our
second decade.

Shane Rhodes Chauffeur Services

It was good to see the return of Shane Rhodes, another early 1990‟s member of
the Lunch Club, emerging from the mists of time after a long absence. Since we
saw him last he has set up Shane Rhodes Chauffeur Services a luxury car
service and he would be delighted to provide his services for Club members.

Future Lunches

Our next Lunch will be held at Sworders Auction Rooms in the Cambridge
Road, Stansted, on 7 November 2007 at the kind invitation Guy Schooling
of GE Sworder & Sons. It is very apposite that we should be led into our
second decade by Guy, one of the original November 1997 founding members of
the Lunch Club.

The vagaries of the Internet mean that occasionally you may not receive your
invitation so please
                         diarise future lunches now!!

Sponsor a Lunch in 2008

I am delighted that almost all lunches in 2008 are now being sponsored; only
May (see below) and September remain available.

It will be noted that in May I am looking for a number of sponsors for The Lords
Taverners Charity of which Barry Root is an East Anglia Region Committee
member. As most will be aware, the Taverners do an enormous amount of good
work by: providing incentives to play cricket in schools and clubs; enabling young
people with special needs to participate in sporting activities; supplying mini-
buses to special needs organisations; creating recreational facilities in

conjunction with the National Playing Fields' Association. Barry is anxious to
help the Taverners to raise their profile and to improve public awareness of their
work in the region by enabling the Taverners to address groups like the Lunch

Typically the cost of sponsoring a lunch is in the order of £500 including the cost
of subsidising the price of lunch. We are therefore proposing that five members
of the Lunch Club each contribute £100 to enable the Taverners to address the
Club in May. The rewards for the sponsors:

 The satisfaction of enabling a very worthwhile charity to convey its
 That warm glow that comes from being generous
 The usual privileges of being warmly thanked and of generally being
                                    treated with respect;

Please let me know by no later than 7 November 2007 if you would like to
participate. In the event of there being more than five applicants, I shall ask them
all to bid for the privilege of sponsoring the Taverners and accept the five highest
bidders; anything over £500 will be presented to the Taverners. In the event of
fewer than five sponsors, Anglia Business Resources will pick up the tab.

This kind of charitable sponsorship is a new departure for the Lunch Club and I
shall be very interested to see how it works. Please support us.

A Day at the Races

Unfortunately support for the Day at the Races on 4 October 2007 was
insufficient to justify holding the event on that date but, encouraged by the
interest of those who could not manage 4 October, we are proposing to postpone
our visit to Newmarket until Friday 2 November, the last meeting of the season at
Newmarket, which will make an enjoyable start to what will become a long
weekend. The arrangements will be the same as before, namely, that we will
begin at about 1030 hrs with a visit to some stables, followed by lunch at noon,
after which we will move on to the Course for the start of racing at 1330 hrs.
Barry and Joan Root will host the day and guide us through the conventions of
racing and the interpretation of bookies' / Tote betting and odds.

The cost will be between £50 and £60 a head assuming that you make your own
way to Newmarket. Nearer the time I will let you have detailed instructions

including the arrangements for badges. I will also look at who is coming to see
whether there is any scope for shared transport.

A day at the races is always interesting, always enjoyable and occasionally
profitable and I do hope that you will decide to come to what should be a very
good day out. Assuming this is an invitation that you cannot refuse, please
confirm that you will be coming and the number in your party (please feel free to
bring friends). A deposit of £20 a head would be most helpful. If you would like to
pay on line, please, using your name and „races‟ as a reference, make payment
