Career Research: Venture Capital
Venture capital firms raise investment funds of anywhere from $10 million to hundreds of millions from limited partner investors such as pension funds, large nonprofit organizations, and wealthy private individuals. The money is then invested in fledgling, private companies in exchange for an equity stake in these firms. Funds realize returns when the companies either sell their shares to public through an Initial Public Offering or sell out to a third party. Most venture investments are made in high-tech fields like software, telecommunications, medical devices, and biotechnology and the relationships between venture firms and high-tech companies have required that venture capitalists become experts both in business and in technology. The work of venture capitalists can be broken down into 3 phases: • Sourcing and picking the investments: finding the best investments before your competitors, through a strong web of contacts • Doing the deals: learning how to negotiate investment terms • Managing the investments: creating relationships between companies, helping start-ups find professional management, introducing them to large potential customers, and helping them to raise financing
