Consider the following steps in selecting a major and visit Career Planning & Placement to discover your options. 1. Begin by knowing yourself. Ask yourself these questions when deciding on a major:  Do I enjoy subjects focused on data, people, or things?  Do I enjoy working with numbers or words?  Am I drawn to fine arts, business, life sciences, mathematical sciences, humanities, or combinations of these areas?  How do I learn best? From lectures? Small group discussions? Case studies? Hands-on applications?  Are there courses I have taken that I truly enjoy? Do I find similarities in these courses?  In which academic areas do I excel?  Do I prefer to study one subject in depth, or would I like to incorporate several subject areas into my major?  Are there areas of knowledge or special skills that I want to develop? Become informed about your options. Know the major fields of study that are available at Charleston Southern University by looking in the college undergraduate catalog. Explore your options. The best way to find out about majors of interest is to get first-hand information about them. The following are great ways to gather information about a major:  Read the college catalog.  Talk to students in the major.  Speak to alumni.  Observe classes in departments of interest.  Visit with professors.  Talk with Career Planning & Placement staff.  Visit a student majors club meeting.  Read departmental literature.  Write to associations that represent academic areas.  Work part time in an academic department at school.  Participate in an internship within a specific discipline.  Volunteer in your field of interest Incorporate the results of your exploration into your decision-making. The more matches between your personal needs, values, and interests and the major of your choice, the better the decision. 2. 3. 4.
