University Name, Seal, Letterhead, Business Cards, and
                            Electronic Communications

I. University Name and Seal
The name "University of California" is the property of the state. The use of the name
or any abbreviation of it or any name of which these words are a part is governed by
the education code of the state of California, the Bylaws of The Regents of the
University of California and UC policy. Unauthorized use of the name (or any
abbreviation of it or any name of which these words are a part) is a misdemeanor.

In general the use of the university name and unofficial corporate seal are restricted
to official university purposes that support the university's mission.

They may not be used to designate another business or organization or explicitly or
implicitly endorse, oppose or support commercial businesses or religious or political
   organizations, movements, or activities.

At UCSB, the campus policy coordinator has been delegated the authority to
approve the use of the unofficial corporate seal and the use of the name of the
University of California, Santa Barbara (or any abbreviation of it or any name of
which these words are a part). To request the use of the university name and
unofficial corporate seal you may contact the campus policy coordinator at 893-
   4212.

At UCSB, the director of the UCSB Bookstore has been delegated the authority to
approve requests for the manufacture and/or distribution of all commercial products
bearing the campus' name and/or the unofficial corporate seal. To request approval
to manufacture and/or distribute a commercial product bearing the campus' name
and/or the unofficial corporate seal you may contact the director of the UCSB
   Bookstore at 893-4599.

II. University Letterhead, Business Cards and Electronic Communications
University letterhead and business cards are for official university purposes. Their
content and use are governed by the California Education code, the By-Laws of The
Regents, and UC policy. Use for other than university purposes, such as for
personal, commercial, political, or religious purposes, or on behalf of another
organization would constitute misuse of university resources.

The university upholds the principle of academic freedom of expression for
individuals and groups within the university community. However, individuals and
groups are not to present personal, political, or religious opinions in ways that imply
endorsement by the University. Therefore, university letterhead is not to be used to
convey personal, political, or religious opinions. (See Policy on Letterhead &
   Business Cards, http://www.ucop.edu/ucophome/coordrev/policy/9-28-99ltrhead.html.)

When opinions are expressed in incidental electronic communications that contain
a university address, (either in the header/address or body) a disclaimer shall be
included in the note stating that the personal, political, or religious opinions are those
of the author and are not to be viewed as the University's position. (Use of
electronic communications is to conform to the UC Electronic Communications
Policy, http://www.ucop.edu/ucophome/policies/ec/ and UCSB Interim Implementing
