You provide the essential spirit for our student athletes and I look forward to joining you this season. It is wonderful to witness the ongoing tradition of dedicated college and community support for our athletes that I first witnessed forty years ago as an undergraduate. We have an excellent team of coaches and athletic personnel working to inspire and prepare our students for competition while providing the important lessons of teamwork and cooperation essential to their future. This year, we are pleased to welcome the newest member of that dedicated staff in our new Director of Athletics, Peggy Carl. Peggy returned to her native Midwest this fall and we hope you will join us in welcoming her to our community. Athletic competition is a vital part of a liberal arts education. More than a third of our students participate in intercollegiate athletics at the same time they are involved in the many non-athletic opportunities that Beloit College offers. When you add in intramural competition, more than half our students are involved in sports. I want to take this opportunity to thank our students, faculty, staff, the parents of our students, and the greater Beloit community for supporting our athletic program. We hope that your enjoyment of these athletic contests is equal to our pride in sponsoring them. Enjoy the game! Stated intent of the union was to preserve the tradition of both leagues while enhancing administration efficiency and fostering equity between men’s and women’s sports. Organization of the MCAC was conceived at a meeting at Coe College on May 12, 1921. Charter members were Beloit , Carleton, Coe, Cornell, Knox and Lawrence . The MWC has since grown to provide championship intercollegiate competition for 10 liberal arts schools located in Illinois , Iowa and Wisconsin . Member schools are Beloit , Carroll, Grinnell , Illinois College, Knox, Lake Forest , Lawrence , Monmouth, Ripon and St. Norbert. Others institutions who have spent time as a part of the MWC include: Hamline, Millikin, St. Olaf and University of Chicago . Track and field was the only sport contested in the MCAC’s inaugural year, but the conference now sponsors a total of 20 men’s and women’s sports, culminating in a MWC Championship tournament event at the end of every season with the exception of football. MWC tourney champions receive the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championships in selected sports. Chris Graham took on the role of Conference Commissioner in 2004, where he remains today. For more on the MWC, please consult the conference’s official website at www.midwestconference.org. 2007-08 All Midwest Conference Men’s Basketball Team First Team John Grotberg, Guard, Junior, Grinnell College Andy Horton, Center, Junior, Beloit College Andy Hurley, Forward, Senior, Lawrence University Ryan Kroeger, Guard, Junior, Lawrence University Wes Ladwig, Guard, Junior, Carroll College Joe Terwelp, Center, Senior, Monmouth College Second Team David Arseneault, Guard, Junior, Grinnell College Eric Bieniasz, Forward, Senior, St. Norbert College Scott Gillespie, Guard, Freshman, Ripon College Bobby Long, Guard, Junior, Grinnell College Laird Walker, Forward, Senior, Lake Forest College Honorable Mention Adam Estergard, Guard, Junior, Knox College John Hoch, Guard, Sophomore, Carroll College Brad Johnson, Guard, Junior, Illinois College Tom Katzfey, Center, Junior, St. Norbert College Grant Kluge, Forward, Senior, Knox College Ryan Mueller, Forward, Senior, Carroll College Hoyt Rees, Forward, Sophomore, Lake Forest College Player of the Year: Ryan Kroeger, Lawrence University Coach of the Year: Tim Heimann, Knox College Andy Horton 1st Team All-MWC 2nd Team All-Midwest Region 2007-08 Midwest Conference Final Men’s Basketball Standings MWC W 15 11 10 10 7 7 7 6 5 2 L 1 5 6 6 9 9 9 10 11 14 Overall W L 22 3 16 8 15 9 14 10 11 12 8 15 7 15 11 12 9 14 4 19 Lawrence University Grinnell College Carroll College St. Norbert College Lake Forest College Knox College Monmouth College Ripon College Illinois College Beloit College 10 1959-60 Tom Rath, 1st Bill Biederman, HM Dennis Hodge, HM Craig Miller, HM BUCCANEER ALL-MWC PLAYERS 1968-69 Kit Jones, 1st 1969-70 Tom Brenn, 1st 1970-71 Jerome Clark, 1st 1972-73 McClenty Robinson, 2nd 1973-74 McClenty Robinson, 2nd Larry Johnson, 2nd 1974-75 Mike Kujak, 2nd 1984-85 Michael Clinton, 1st Larry Knutson, HM Evans Papanikolaou, HM Tim Schneider, HM 1985-86 Michael Clinton, 1st Steve Hidden, HM Larry Knutson, HM Evans Papanikolaou, HM 1986-87 Steve Hidden, 1st North Ken Kozemzak, 2nd North 1987-88 Ken Kozemzak, 1st North Brian VanderPal, 2nd North 1988-89 Brian VanderPal, 1st North John Tharp, 2nd North Ken Kozemzak, 2nd North 1989-90 Brian VanderPal, 1st North Ken Muth, 2nd North Pat Brachmann, 2nd North 1990-91 John Tharp, 1st North Ken Muth, 2nd North Scott Schleich, 2nd North 1991-92 Mark Sobczak, 1st North Jim Matel, 1st North Lance Randall, 2nd North 1992-93 Mark Sobczak, 1st North Jim Matel, 1st North Scott Schleich, 2nd North 1993-94 Erik Quamme, 1st North Lance Randall, 2nd North David Kaneshiro, 2nd North Erik Quamme 1994-95 Erik Quamme, 1st North* Adam Tigert, 2nd North 1995-96 Erik Quamme, 1st North Adam Tigert, 2nd North 1996-97 Adam Tigert, 2nd 1997-98 Darren Rothermel, 2nd 1998-99 Darren Rothermel, HM 1999-2000 Henry Grant, 2nd Jason Hanson, HM 2000-01 Henry Grant, 1st* Matt Entwistle, HM 2001-02 Henry Grant, 1st Marques Flowers, 2nd 2002-03 Marques Flowers, 1st Matt Entwistle, HM 2003-04 Josh Hinz, 1st 2004-05 Josh Hinz, 1st Nick Hendry, HM 2005-06 Josh Hinz, 1st 2006-07 Mike Dowden, HM Michael Clinton 1961-62 Dave Varnado, HM Dave Hendricks, HM 1962-63 Dave Varnado, 1st Dave Hendricks, 2nd 1963-64 Dave Hendricks, 2nd Bob Rudolph, HM 1964-65 Bob Rudolph, 2nd Phil Woolley, 2nd 1965-66 Bob Rudolph, 1st Lloyd Smith, HM Phil, Woolley, HM Ray Niznik, HM 1966-67 Jim Jones, 1st Lloyd Smith, 1st Lanier Gordon, 2nd 1967-68 Jim Jones, 1st Kit Jones, 1st 1975-76 Mike Kujak, 2nd 1976-77 Dave Grady, 1st East Mike Kujak, 1st East 1977-78 Mark Hanzlik, 1st East Mark Hanzlik 1978-79 Mark Hanzlik, 1st East Dave Nolden, 2nd East 1979-80 Alonzo Jackson, 2nd Mark Smith, 2nd 1980-81 Mark Smith, 1st Mike Waterlander,2nd 1981-82 Chris Lindroth, 1st John Erikson, 2nd 1982-83 Dave Smothers, 2nd Tom Snapp, 2nd 1983-84 Michael Clinton, 1st Tom Snapp, HM Bob Rudolph Brian Vanderpal 2007-08 Andy Horton, 1st * League MVP THE BUCCANEERS VS. In the Fall of 2007, the Arena was re-painted and the Floods made an additional donation to fund two large main court scoreboards as well as scoreboards on each side court, buzzer-activated, lighted backboards and new baseline padding. In addition, the sound system was upgraded and enhanced lighting fixtures installed. Beloit defeated Lawrence University 93-68 in the first game in the Arena. A flexible curriculum, grounded in rigorous study encourages independent research, fieldwork, and collaboration with peers and professors. Coursework is interdisciplinary, experiential, and global in scope. The average class size is 15 students; Beloit's student-to-faculty ratio is 11:1. Beloit's wooded forty-acre campus includes twenty-eight buildings in a range of architectural styles; four buildings are listed on the National or State Register of Historic Places. The campus is marked by winding pathways, expansive lawns, displays of public art, and ancient Indian mounds. Beloit College was founded in 1846, when Wisconsin was still a territory. The early curriculum was built on the classical tradition, but students were given an unusual amount of freedom to choose their own courses. Today, Beloit is recognized for its longstanding commitment to curricular innovation, and its firstyear initiatives and international education programs. The Beloit College community is diverse and noted for its passionate engagement with ideas and the world. Its 1300 students are from nearly every state, the District of Columbia, and more than 30 nations. Twenty percent of its students are nonCaucasian; ten percent come from countries other than the United States. No more than ten percent of a graduating class is represented in any one of Beloit's majors. The college's academic facilities include the internationally recognized Logan Museum of Anthropology, the Wright Museum or Art, a state of the art performing arts complex and research labs equipped with advanced technology. Beloit offers more than thirty international programs, dozens of domestic study programs, and hundreds of internships and field study programs. OUR MISSION STATEMENT Beloit College engages the intelligence, imagination, and curiosity of its students, empowering them to lead fulfilling lives marked by high achievement, personal responsibility, and public contribution in a diverse society. Our emphasis on international and interdisciplinary perspectives, the integration of knowledge with experience, and close collaboration among peers, professors, and staff equips our students to approach the complex problems of the world ethically and thoughtfully. 98% of Beloit's 103 full-time faculty members hold a Ph.D. or the highest degree in their field. Teaching is the faculty's highest priority but all professors are active scholars and artists. Many are leaders in educational reform. Professors serve as mentors, guides, and partners on research projects and academic work. A strong tradition of student-teacher collaboration contributes to the college's lively intellectual community.
