Beginning Lacrosse Final Study Guide
1) Lacrosse is the oldest sport in America. Native Americans used the game to settle disputes. The games would go on for days, and the field could be as long as a mile. There could be as many as thousands of members on each team. 2) US Lacrosse was founded Jan 2,1998. 3) Lacrosse is currently the fastest growing sport in America today. 4) The rules and tactics of Lacrosse is much like basketball, one team is always trying to advance the ball to the other side of the field to score, while the other team is trying to defend their goal from being scored on. 5) There are three Lacrosse leagues: Mens, Woman’s and Box League. 6) Men’s league plays with 10 players. Three attackers (Forward line), Three midfield (Middle line), and three defenders (Back line). The goalie. 7) In the woman’s league there is no out of bounds. 8) In Box league’s there is six players on each side, including the goalie. 9) The stick includes the head, the pocket (Strings attached to the head), the throat of the stick and the shaft. 10) Men’s pocket’s on the sticks are deeper because the speed of their throws is harder in their games. 11) Face-Offs are used to start each game, the start of each new quarter, and after each goal. 12) The goalie uses the longest stick on the field. Can be up to 72 inches long. 13) The crease is an 18 foot semi-circle around the goalie. 14) If the goalie catches the ball with his stick, he must toss the ball out to his team from inside the crease within 5 seconds. 15) No attacking player is allowed in the crease. No defending player can check his opponent with the stick in the crease. 16) Scooping the ball is a skill needed to pick up the ball of the ground with the pocket of your stick when the opponent has lost control of the ball during game play. 17) Cradling is a skill used to keep the ball in the pocket of your stick without it falling out while running down the field. 18) In Men’s regulation games the team with the ball can only have possession for 30 seconds. 19) The law of physics that keeps the ball from not falling out while running is called centrifugal force. 20) Checking is a tactic a defender uses against the opponent by knocking their stick against the other opponents stick to knock the ball to the ground. 21) Safe checking is crucial. This means dislodging the ball from the opponents stick by a controlled pocking of the stick by a downward motion between the shoulders and hips. 22) If the ball goes out of bounds on the sidelines, then the opposing player nearest the out of bounds area is awarded the ball. 23) The defending players must give the offensive players ten yards when throwing in a ball from the sidelines. 24) Covering the ball on the ground with the face of your stick during a turnover is a foul. You can only scoop it up. 25) Unsafe checking is a penalty in Mrs. Lopez’s class, and push-ups will be awarded each time.
