The structure above shows the minimum number of 300 level courses and the maximum
number of 100 level courses. You can choose to take more 300 or 200 level courses.

Tips on Planning your Course of Study

 • Plan your entire course of study at the start of your degree. This will help you identify
and avoid problems later in your course of study and ensure that you have all the
prerequisites you need to enrol in your choice of elective courses. You can always
make changes to the plan later on.
 • A bachelors degree is made up of compulsory, soft-core (elective courses from a
        limited list) and elective courses.
 • You need to pass 360 credits (24 courses) which will take three years of full time
study. You may be able to complete the degree in less than three years by taking
        courses in Summer School.
 • You must complete all the compulsory courses for the degree, including the required
number of soft core courses. The remaining courses should be chosen from the
schedule of courses for the BCM degree. With approval from the Academic Co-
ordinator, up to six units can be chosen from any of the Bachelor’s Degree Courses
        offered at Lincoln University.
 • You must complete at least one, but no more than two, of the available majors.
 • A full-time workload is four courses per semester or two courses in either of the
        summer schools.
  • Templates are provided to help you plan your course of study. The compulsory
courses are already entered in the template, you just have to choose your soft core and
         elective choices.
  • Courses are usually only taught in one semester per year.
  • Courses are assigned a timetable block. To avoid lecture and laboratory clashes, do
not choose courses in the same block in any one semester.
  • You must complete the prerequisites for the course you wish to take and it is advisable
to have completed as many of the recommended preparation courses as possible.
  • First year or 100 level courses have no prerequisites.
  • You cannot enrol in a course if you have previously passed any course which is
restricted against the one you wish to take.
  • You can only credit three C- or restricted passes to a three year degree. Clear passes
must be obtained for at least five units at the 300 level, including all the compulsory
and soft-core 300 level courses required for the degree or major.
  • ALWAYS CONSULT A COURSE ADVISER IF YOU ARE IN ANY DOUBT.

Frequently asked Questions

Q: What if I want to study part-time?
A: You can choose to study fewer than four courses per semester. Choose your courses to
avoid timetable block clashes and to ensure that you have taken all the prerequisites you need
for the 200 or 300 level courses. Remember most courses are offered in only one semester.
Part-time study has consequences on your ability to access student loans and allowances.
Contact StudyLink for more information.

Q: Do I have to take all the courses in order?
A: The template shows just one of the possible combinations of courses. So long as you plan
to take a course in the semester it is offered, have passed all the prerequisites required and
avoid block clashes, then you can take the courses in any order.

Q: Do I have to start in Semester 1 (February)?
A: No you can start your degree in Semester 2 (July) and a template is provided for a July
entry.

Q: What happens if I fail a prerequisite course?
A: You will have to retake it. If this causes undue hardship, you can apply for a prerequisite
waiver. Approval is granted on a case by case basis and with regard to your performance in
other courses. Prerequisites are there to ensure you have a good chance of passing the course.

Course Planning Template
Please note:
    1. This template is prepared as a guide only. Your course of study should be checked carefully to ensure
that the degree requirements will be met.
    2. The template is designed to meet the regulations for the degree as they are shown in the Lincoln
University 2008 Calendar. It is possible that information related to individual courses, such as timetable
block or course availability may change. Up to date information can be found on the Lincoln University
         website.
    3. The template only considers courses that are taken in Semester 1 and Semester 2. Students can study a
limited number of courses in Summer School which will necessitate amendment to the programme plan.
