BAPTISMS - Class 107
What is Baptism?
The word baptism is from the Greek word “Baptizo” meaning to „immerse‟ or „to deep in
completely‟.

Different Kinds of Baptisms - The scripture recorded three kinds of Baptisms. Namely –

        A. Baptism into Christ - Galatians 3:27, this is done by the Holy Spirit at salvation –
           1 Corinthians 12:13
        B. Baptism by immersion or “Water Baptism” - Act.2:38, Mathew 28:18-19
        C. Holy Ghost Baptism – Mathew 3:11, Act.19:1-6. This is the infilling of the Holy Spirit
upon a believer. One of the evidences of this is by speaking in other tongues - Acts
           8:14-17, Acts 19:1-6

Water Baptism Explained
This is the identification with the death, burial and resurrection of Christ and a public declaration of
Him. Immersion by water in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy spirit – Romans 6:3-4,
Mathew 28:19
 Biblical water baptism must be by immersion – a method where the believer is dipped
completely into the water - John 3:23, John 1:28
 It is not by sprinkling of water

Who Should Undergo Water Baptism?
Baptism is made for every believer. Mark 16:15-18, Mathew 28:18-19

Symbolism of Water Baptism
Water Baptism is a public identification of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is
also an affirmation or confirmation of the new life we now have in Christ. Romans 6:3-4, Romans
6:4-7

Laying on of Hands
This is placing hands upon the body of another person for a definite spiritual purpose. It had a lot of
significance in the Old Testament – Leviticus 1:1-4, Genesis 48:14, Deuteronomy 34:9.
Some of the reasons for this act are-
     To impart healing – Luke 4:40, Mark 16:17-18
 To impart baptism of the Holy Spirit – Acts 19:6
     To impart spiritual gifts and blessings – Romans 1:11, 1 Timothy 4:14, 2 Timothy 1:6
 To set people apart for specific assignments – Acts 13:2-3.
 However, care should be taken in the laying on of hands -1 Timothy 5:22
