Closing the Achievement Gap
On Monday, August 18, 2008, Principals of all the Hartford Public Schools gathered for a
luncheon and celebration at the Rensselaer in Hartford. The occasion was to recognize,
applaud and reward principals for the very successful 2007-2008 school year. The CMT
and CAPT results proved that our students are making strides and we are making our way
closer to closing the achievement gap. Congratulations to students and staff for a fabulous
year!

Students Motivate and Inspire Teachers
Every year, prior to the start of school, teachers gather for Convocation. The event is meant
to motivate and inspire teachers for the year ahead. Mayor Perez, the Teacher of the Year
and Dr. Adamowski addressed our faculty with “words of wisdom” to start the new year.
But nothing inspired the crowd like the speeches of Briana Ramos, an 8th grade student at
Batchelder Elementary School and Angela Dunnham, a senior at Weaver High School.
Briana told teachers that she has big dreams and she looks to her teachers for support and
guidance. “You hold my dreams in the palm of your hand. Help me achieve them,” she
said. Angela told teachers that they are innovators and nothing short of miracle workers and
because of them she is on the road to college. Both young women reminded teachers how
important their work is in this city and that they are making a difference. Along with Briana
and Angela, the Hartford Magnet Middle School Marching Band performed at the event and
Myra Vasquez, a 10th grade student at Bulkeley High School sang our National Anthem.

School Construction Updates
Hartford Public Schools has an asbestos management plan on file for each school building
as required by the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA). This management
plan has been approved by the Asbestos Program of the Connecticut Department of Public
Health and is administered by Hartford Public Schools’ designated person, Mr. Claudio
Bazzano, Director of Building & Grounds.

A copy of the plan is available for your review at each school building and at the office of
Mr. Claudio Bazzano at the Buildings & Grounds Department, 388 Wethersfield Avenue,
Hartford, CT 06114.

The management plan includes information regarding the locations of asbestos containing
building materials (ACBM) in each school building, the condition of the ACBM and a plan
for managing the ACBM.

Our last triennial re-inspection was conducted on April 25, 2007 and our next re-inspection
is scheduled for April 25, 2010. Periodic surveillance is required every six months and the
Head Custodian performs this inspection.

Questions and concerns regarding this process should be directed to Mr. Claudio Bazzano,
Director of Building & Grounds at (860) 695-3233.
