Student Case Study - A man’s world Dawn Stokes, 36yrs from Quinton in Birmingham has spent half her life bringing up her seven children, who range in age from 3 to 18 years old. But the supermum had always dreamed of following her father Alfred into the building trade as a bricklayer. Alfred had discouraged her from picking up a trowel, claiming that the male-dominated construction industry was no place for a
woman. "My dad didn't want me to get into bricklaying because at that time girls were supposed to get married and have children. Only boys were taught the trade. Things were a bit old-fashioned back then." But when Alfred died last year, he left his work tools for Dawn and she decided to take the plunge and follow her childhood dream. She managed to complete two college courses between all the school runs and housework - to follow in her late father's footsteps. Dawn passed one building course at the Best Centre in Brierley Hill and then received her City and Guilds Bricklaying from Sandwell College. She passed all nine modules. She went on to collect Student of the Year at Sandwell College. Dawn is now hoping to land her first job on a Midlandbuilding site. She said: "The kids are all very proud of what I have achieved. I tell them: “I'm a modern mum now! I'm determined to be a good role model for my children." And while construction remains a male-dominated industry, Dawn has not encountered any prejudice. "Everyone has been brilliant," she said. "I've become one of the lads. It just shows how much times have changed." "I've managed to fit in being a busy mum with learning bricklaying and now I have the chance of a new career." Course Title Ref Full time Part time Evening Short course Venue

It was about two years ago when Gary decided on another career turn, but this time he turned to something he was passionate about: photography. He came to College and left having successfully achieved a City and Guilds Certificate in Photography, a qualification that, he says, has given him a clearer direction and opened doors. He had nothing but praise for his tutors and thanked them for the support they had given him. Gary has now started his own photography business; Gary Gilbert Photography is located in Vicarage Road in West Bromwich.
