Introduction
Glamlife is a gateway to information for students. You can use the Glamlife Directory as a starting
point for finding the information you need. Sometimes, the directory may include links to sites with
more detailed information.

Glamlife also acts as the gateway to your email, personal calendar, e-learning and more.

The basic premise of finding information on Glamlife is as follows:

   1. The Glamlife Search should be your
      first choice for finding information.
   2. The Glamlife Directory will provide
you with an overview of what
      information is available online.
   3. If the overview isn’t enough, more
      detailed information can often be
      found on extensive sub-websites.
   4. If you can’t find information that you
need, email us and we’ll try to help!

Please note: Information relating to your
specific courses and modules is likely to be
hosted on Blackboard, which you can access
through Glamlife.

On the right, you can see an overview of the
new Glamlife home page.

The Glamlife home page

Announcements
At the very top of the Glamlife home page, you will find announcements for students. These are very
short pointers containing important information. They are limited to 140 characters, so they won’t be
longer than a text message on a mobile phone. We’d strongly recommend having a daily glance at
Glamlife to check for announcements.

Your Mail and Your Week
“Your Mail” includes information from your email account. It will tell you how many unread
messages there are in your Inbox. You can click on “Inbox” to get to your email account, and on
“Compose Mail” to send a message.

“Your Week” includes information from your personal calendar. If you use your calendar for
scheduling your time, it will inform you about upcoming appointments.

Quick Links
To make it easy for you to navigate to the most common information you need, a selection of links is
collated underneath your email and calendar.

They fall into different categories, and include general “Quick Links”, “Your Advice Centre” – which
recognises which faculty you belong to and includes links to your faculty website, “Glamlearn”, where
you can find all relevant e-learning links, and “Glamlife highlights”, where the Glamlife editorial team
list the links that are most likely to be relevant at any given time during term.

News and Events
The Glamlife News and Events do exactly what they say on the tin. At the moment, “News” contains
general news from a variety of sources which has a high enough priority to be listed on the front page
of Glamlife. There are a multitude of News feeds on sub-sites, so if you are particularly interested in,
say, “Careers News”, we recommend you also check your favourite mini sites for updates for the time
being. News features are set for an overhaul, and in future, you will have much more control over
which news stories you want to have delivered.

Glamlife Events are hosted on a Google Calendar, and tell you what is going on around campus.

Student Support
The Student Support area includes links to the Glamlife directory, and various support services or
sites. The “Support Highlights” rotate during the academic year, aiming to direct you to the most
relevant support departments at any given time.

Promotional area
At the bottom of the home page, you will find promo images drawing your attention to different parts
of the site – or, sometimes, to external sites. If you are interested, just click on the relevant promo.

Using your email account
You can access your email account from the front page of Glamlife.

Once in your account, it should be fairly easy to use. You can find a guide to using your email here:

Using calendars
As a student, you now have Google email accounts, which comes with Google Calendars. To make
life easier for you, the “Events” functionality on Glamlife has been replaced with Google calendars,
too. This will shortly enable you to select events that you are interested in, and import them into your
own personal calendar. You can then set up your calendar to send you reminders prior to events you
want to attend. You can also enter your lecture details into your calendar, and use it for time
management. You can even share your calendar with other people, which can make arranging
meetings (or social gatherings) much easier. If you use Facebook or other websites that allow for the
planning of events, you can in many cases import those events into your calendar too.

To get to your personal calendar, you can either access it directly from the “Your Week” segment on
the front page, or you can go through your email inbox. There, you can find a link to the calendar in
the top navigation bar, next to the “Mail” link:

Once you have opened the calendar, it should be very easy to use. If you want to find out more,
Google has prepared a Help Guide:

Using the Search
The search functionality is now your quickest way to find information. You can find a “Search” field
in the top right corner of every page on Glamlife. Just use it the way you would use Google or any
other search engine.

When the results appear, you will see the title of the page, followed by a brief text which shows where
on the page your search term showed up, and the URL of the page. This should help you select the
best search result.

Using the Glamlife Directory
The Glamlife Directory lists all the information categories on Glamlife in alphabetical order. If you
browse through the list and don’t see the article you are looking for, or if you aren’t sure about the
name of a department or service, use the search functionality. In most cases, it should lead you to the
information you need.

If you cannot find something in the directory or using search, please email the Glamlife editorial team
(glamlife@glam.ac.uk) and we will try to find the information for you, or add it to Glamlife if it isn’t
online yet.

When reading one of the articles in the Directory, also look at the column on the right hand side. In it,
you will find related information – either in the form of links to websites that relate directly to the
content of the article you are reading, or in the form of downloadable documents.

Below these, you can rate the article and leave feedback. This is especially useful to the Glamlife team
– so if you have an opinion about an individual article, by all means, express it. We’re always glad to
receive praise, and always looking for things to improve.
