What was an Uncle Tom?
Taken from Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s
Cabin.
The term referred to the Slave character in the book who deferred to whites. This therefore entered the vocabulary of Black Americans in the 20th Century to refer to Black Americans who deferred to White Americans.
Who was Washington?
Washington was born a slave in 1856. He was educated and became a teacher. Then founded and headed of the Tuskegee Institution which educated Black Americans.
By 1895 he was regarded as the leading spokesman for the case of Black Americans. 1896 he became President McKinley's advisor on black affairs.
Who was W.E.B Du Bois
He lived from 18681963. Was described as a
‘leader without followers’.
Was very much the intellectual academic.
Established the NAACP in 1909 (Biracial) Wrote effectively against lynching and saw black people as
‘chosen’.
Supported panafricanism and joined the Communist party in 1961

Using the plain a4. Decide who was the most influential and effective of the two. You need to come up with a criteria to assess them by. (i.e Uncle Tom or not? What they achieved?) Then tabulate their strengths and weaknesses. Finally you will need to prepare a brief statement to announce why you have chosen your man. Almost like an electoral nomination.
