Join your fellow Princetonians October 30 - November 4, 2006, on a five-day journey through this region where the Civil Rights Movement got its beginnings in earnest. Begin in Birmingham to visit the Civil Rights Institute, the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, and the sites of other pivotal events during the 1960s. Travel on to Selma and then Montgomery. Dinner discussion will take place at McNair Studios, the photography studio/gallery of Chris McNair, a civil rights worker, photographer, and former state representative as well as the father of Denise McNair, one of the girls killed in the 16th Street Church bombing. The Tutwiler Hotel (D) Tuesday, October 31, 2006 Birmingham This morning’s lecture will be followed by break-out precepts led by both professors. An independent lunch is followed by a tour of the the historic black district and Kelly Ingram Park. Walk to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute for a tour of the Institute followed by a private presentation with individuals representing the various factions and viewpoints of the 1960s. After a dinner reception with southern flair at the Institute, the night is free for individual pursuits. The Tutwiler Hotel (B, D) Wednesday, November 1, 2006 Selma / Montgomery Before departing Birmingham this morning, visit the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, for a guided visit of the site of the tragic bombings. Transfer to Selma while enjoying a lecture and media presentation en route. Upon arrival, lunch along the waterfront as a group before visiting the Slavery & Civil War Museum to explore the roots of the civil rights movement. Continue on to Montgomery for independent dining. Embassy Suites (B, L) Thursday, November 2, 2006 Selma / Montgomery Return to Selma in the morning for a walking tour starting at Edmund Pettus Bridge and continue to the National Voting Rights Museum & Institute, which documents the history of voting rights in America and brings to life the pivotal events. Next, stop in at the First Baptist Church and Brown Chapel AME, two historic churches that were the headquarters for the 1965 Voting Rights marches. The afternoon is free to allow for independent exploration of historic Selma. Return to Montgomery in the late afternoon for a reception and lecture by the study leaders. Embassy Suites (B, R) About the Study Leaders Professor Albert Raboteau Professor Albert J. Rabateau, the Henry Putnam Professor of Religion, is one of the nation’s foremost scholars of African American religious history. His research and teaching have focused specifically on American Catholic history and African-American religious movements. During his tenure at Princeton, Professor Raboteau has served as Dean of the Graduate School (1992-1993) and director of the Program in African American Studies. He was recently awarded Princeton’s 2006 MLK Day Journey Award for Lifetime Service. Professor Valerie Smith Professor Valerie Smith, the Woodrow Wilson Professor of Literature and Director of the Program in African American Studies, returned to Princeton in 2001 after a stint at UCLA. She is a specialist in African American literature and culture, with specific interests in black feminist theory and film studies. She is currently writing a book on narratives of race in the “post-Civil Rights” era. If a tour member cancels on or before February 1, 2006, there is no cancellation penalty imposed. After February 1, 2006, if a tour member cancels the following scale of charges is incurred: There is a nonrefundable administrative fee of $500 per person. The costs associated with any tickets purchased for planned performances (as indicated in the itinerary) are nonrefundable unless the tickets can be resold prior to performance. Written cancellation received by ISDI on or before July 2, 2006: full refund minus $500 per person administrative fee. Written cancellation received by ISDI between July 3-August 16, 2006: full refund of any recoverable land costs, less $900.00 per person cancellation charge (includes administrative fee). Written cancellation received by ISDI between August 17-September 27, 2006, results in forfeit of majority of funds, including a $1,000 per person cancellation charge (includes administrative fee). Cancellation in this time period could involve a loss of as much as 100% of land costs per person. Cancellations received on or after September 28, 2006: no refund. After the tour has commenced, it is not possible to issue any refunds. No refunds are given: (1) for lost travel time or substitution of facilities, (2) for itineraries amended after departure, (3) for circumstances beyond ISDI’s control, necessitating alternate arrangements being made to ensure the safety and/or further participation and enjoyment of your program, (4) if you leave the program after it has begun, or miss any scheduled sightseeing, activities, meals or accommodations. Friday, November 3, 2006 Montgomery Another morning lecture and precepts are followed by a tour of Montgomery. Walk to the Civil Rights Memorial for a visit to this remarkable monument. Designed by noted designer and architect Maya Lin, the Civil Rights Memorial is a monument to the Movement and to those who died in that struggle. Make a stop at the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Church where the boycott was organized. Afterwards, visit the Rosa Parks Library and Museum at Troy State University. The remainder of the day is free for independent pursuits. Join the group again for a farewell dinner and Journey wrap-up at a noted Montgomery restaurant.
