Calls are returned within 24business hours: 913-327-8293.  JFS provides mental health and life counseling; fees are arranged on a sliding scale.  JFS has a Family Life Education program that educates all ages about issues relating to life, living and aging.  Jewish Elder Transport (JET) provides subsidized transportation to low income older adults for travel within 20 miles of their home. This transportation can be used for medical appointments, grocery shopping, going to the beauty shop; anything that helps older adults remain active and independent. Jewish Heritage Foundation of Greater Kansas City Page 5 A Resource Guide: Older Adult Services in the Kansas City Jewish Community 2008  In September 2008, JFS will launch JET Express, a volunteer driver program. Those eligible to use the new service must be 65 years of age and older, cannot have access to readily available transportation and cannot be wheelchair bound. Members will call JFS to make arrangements for a ride and will be reviewed to see if s/he qualifies for the program. A volunteer driver from the community will be assigned to the member to drive them from a location of their choice to their destination.  JFS is also piloting a membership-based, fee-based program called Help@Home. This program was developed to help older adults “age in place” by providing services to help them stay in their homes and neighborhoods. Services will include minor home repairs, computer trouble shooting, safety assessments/home modifications and nursing and nutritional assessments.  JFS facilitates support groups including a grief support group and a caregivers support group.  JFS also provides members of Jewish Senior Network with a limited number of free tickets, as well as free taxi service, to shows playing in the Lewis and Shirley White Theater, located on the Jewish Community Campus.  JFS provides spiritual and wellness assistance through the Community Chaplain Program (see page 12). Jewish Heritage Foundation of Greater Kansas City Page 6 A Resource Guide: Older Adult Services in the Kansas City Jewish Community 2008 Jewish Senior Network A Program of the Jewish Federation of Greater Kansas City Phone: 913-327-4677 Website: www.jewishkansascity.org Services Provided: Jewish Senior Network (JSN) provides four specific services.  Jewish Senior Network is a free one-stop hotline for information and referrals for all older adult needs including transportation, activities, home care, counseling and food assistance.  JSN also provides a no cost needs assessment for older adults to ascertain the appropriate arrangements and/or services for older adults.  JSN also refers older adults to a no cost case manager who can help connect older adults with additional services.  JSN offers financial subsidies for approved goods and services for qualified older adults. Jewish Heritage Foundation of Greater Kansas City Page 7 A Resource Guide: Older Adult Services in the Kansas City Jewish Community 2008 The Heritage Center A Program of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City Phone: 913-327-8042 Website: www.jcckc.org Services Provided: The Heritage Center provides a variety of engaging activities for Jewish older adults 65 years of age and older.  The facility has a packed weekly schedule with all sorts of activities and classes to choose from: bridge, book clubs, computer classes, ceramics, movie matinees, Jewish education and concerts.  The Heritage Center also runs day trips to local destinations.  ESL classes for Russian-Americans are held weekly at The Heritage Center.  From Pilates classes to spirituality seminars, The Heritage Center provides high quality services that are also highly subsidized including inexpensive catered lunches and classes that are more than affordable.  Scheduled roundtrip transportation to the facility, located in the Jewish Community Center, is also highly subsidized. Jewish Heritage Foundation of Greater Kansas City Page 8 A Resource Guide: Older Adult Services in the Kansas City Jewish Community 2008 Village Shalom Phone: 913-317-2600 Website: www.villageshalom.org Services Provided: Village Shalom is a continuing care retirement center that provides a continuum of living options and a variety of services for the community.  The Village Shalom offers many residential options including: independent living villas, assisted independent living, skilled-nursing and secure, memory-care.  Some of the community’s many features, services and amenities include: o Spa and Wellness Center designed specifically for seniors o Rehabilitation program (physical, speech & occupational therapies) o On-site Dental clinic for campus residents o Daily activities and programs o Two full-service salons o Library and gift-shop o Synagogue Jewish Heritage Foundation of Greater Kansas City Page 9 A Resource Guide: Older Adult Services in the Kansas City Jewish Community 2008 o On-site banking o The prestigious Epsten Art Gallery  Rachel’s Café, located on the Village Shalom Campus, serves Vaad supervised Kosher food from 9am -2pm Monday-Friday.  Village Shalom also has a certified and flexible adult day care program for older adults with Alzheimer’s and Dementia, an outpatient rehabilitation program and an acclaimed Spa and Wellness Center specifically designed for older adults.  The Campus is also home to an Alzheimer’s family support group sponsored through the Alzheimer’s Association.  Village Shalom provides scheduled transportation for residents. Transportation is also available for adult day stay clients at an additional charge. Jewish Heritage Foundation of Greater Kansas City Page 10 A Resource Guide: Older Adult Services in the Kansas City Jewish Community 2008 Yachad Kosher Food Pantry Phone: 913-649-4852 (Chabad House) Services Provided: Yachad is Kansas City’s one and only Kosher food pantry.  Yachad is open on the first Sunday of every month from 9-11 am and by appointment.  Yachad operates out of The Chabad House, located at 6201 Indian Creek Drive, Overland Park, KS.  Yachad has mostly non-perishable items in-house.  Additionally, Yachad partners with Jewish Senior Network (JSN) and Jewish Family Services (JFS) to provide Simcha Boxes, a monthly delivery of canned goods, pastas, personal care items, fresh bread and fresh fruit to older adults. Simcha Box eligibility is determined through JFS.
