A Guide to Personal Firewalls

A Guide to Personal Firewalls by Ben Fox The Definition of the term Firewall. A firewall is a barrier to keep destructive forces or fire away from you or your property. In your car the physical wall between the car's motor and the passenger compartment is called a firewall. In computer terms a firewall is simply a program or hardware device that filters the information coming through the Internet connection into your private network or computer system. The idea is that only the programs or messages you want will be allowed through. What if I don't have a firewall? Without a firewall in place your computer is directly accessible to anyone on the internet. While it does take a skilled person to find and take advantage of an unprotected computer, it's simply a good idea to keep your computer protected. What it protects you from: Viruses Probably the most well-known threat. A firewall won't stop you from opening up an email virus. However, many viruses can only spread to computers without firewalls. Spyware This threat wants to log what websites you go to and how you spend your money. It will take this information and send it back to it's originator. Spyware counts on your computer being unprotected in order to function. Denial of Service You have probably heard this phrase used in news reports on the attacks on major Web sites. This happens when many computers infected with a virus send garbage data to a network with the intention of overloading that network causing it to crash. Spoofing When you click on a web page to view, your computer requests that web page. Along with that request is your computers address. That's how the website knows where to send that web page to. Hackers sometimes take advantage of this to make information appear to come from a trusted source or even from inside your own network! Most firewall products disable spoofing by default. Hardware vs. Software firewalls. There are different types for different computers. The kind of firewall that will suite you best depends on two things: What kind of internet connection you have and what operating system you use. If you are using Windows 98 and connect to the internet with a modem then you are usually safe without a firewall. The biggest threats are the newest threats and the newest threats are likely targeted to your newer computers running windows 2000 or XP. If you still want more protection a number of software firewalls are available. ZoneAlarm is a free firewall available for download from www.zonelabs.com. If you have broadband internet (that's a cable modem or DSL) then you definitely need a hardware firewall, regardless of what operating system you are running. The reason for this is hackers are impatient. If one finds an unprotected system that has a fast connection to the internet they will try to exploit it. There are a number of reputable companies that make hardware firewalls for home use. The most popular is LinkSys. Other popular brands include SMC, D-Link, and Netgear. If you have a Windows XP computer, regardless of how you connect to the internet, then you are lucky. A free update is available for Windows XP that includes a built in software firewall. This update is called service pack 2. When service pack 2 is installed it automatically turns this feature on to help protect you. If you run Windows XP on a broadband connection you will notice that you are recommended to have both the hardware firewall and the built in firewall included with service pack 2. Since they are two different types they have no problem cooperating. One important thing to remember is that a firewall is a preventative measure. It is not bulletproof protection against all threats. Using it along with the good practices of closing (not clicking on) pop ups and deleting (not opening) suspicious email will keep your computer happy and safe.
