                                             Enthalpy Changes

Concentrated sulfuric acid (~95-98%) must be carefully handled for many reasons, but due to slow
decomposition, storage concerns are very important.

Write the balanced chemical equation for the decomposition of sulfuric acid into water and gaseous sulfur
trioxide.

Using standard molar enthalpies of formation, determine the enthalpy change for this reaction.

Draw an enthalpy diagram for the decomposition of sulfuric acid.

Even though this is normally a slow reaction, explain why it becomes a larger concern for the storage of
concentrated sulfuric acid.
