A fishing story to remember
There I was, at one of my favorite places

on the shore of a nearby lake — fishing.
Pauline had given me a new casting reel, I
was giving it a workout, enjoying how quiet
it functioned, and how far I could cast as the
day moved too quickly to a close.

loved to be near the water and that He had
called humble fishermen to be his disciples,

become  known  as  world  changers  who
brought thousands into the family of faith
and  launched  a  spiritual  adventure  that

the case, moved me to worship — softly

indescribable moment — one that seemed
frozen in time (or eternity) for as long as this
beautiful bird was there resting on my pole.
  ‘Well, you’re a pretty bird,’ I remarked, a
comment I might have made to a cardinal,

a robin or even a sparrow. But, this winged
one was different. This dove had arrived
uninvited to my worship service.

Forty days after the tops of the mountains
began to appear, following the great flood
of Noah’s time (Genesis 8), Noah sent out a
dove to see if the water had receded enough
to embark from the ark. The dove’s return,
and subsequent second mission, let Noah
know that by God’s grace he had weathered
the storm and saved the race.
When Jesus was baptized by John the
Baptist, Matthew says the Holy Spirit in

                                                                 in Genesee County
the form of a dove came to rest on Him
(Matthew 3).
So, doves have come to symbolize peace
or the presence of God.
Imagine then my surprise when one of
these carriers of good news had come to
visit me while I was singing, praying for
others and giving thanks.
‘Cut to the chase,’ some readers say. ‘Did
you catch any fish?’
Yes, a Northern pike, which I soon set
free to roam the depths and grow, just as a
beautiful dove had arrived out of the blue
to help me grow in my understanding of
God’s  love  and  share  this  unforgettable
story with you.
How long did the dove stay?
  Those  magic  moments  weren’t  timed,
but their memories remain, today.
And, the peace God brings to a troubled                               877-891-9081

As Leighton, or his son, Doug, drives to
homes in the tri-county area, their pickup truck
or Hummer oftentimes prompts a second
glance from nearby motorists. How often
does a truck pull up beside a car with “Hus-
band For A Day” boldly printed on its side?
Leighton said women call him, the
majority of the time, to get an estimate.
After the initial call, he works with the
husbands or men of the house just as often
as he works with the women.
“For the most part, men don’t care as
much about the house as the women,” said
Leighton. “It’s their domain and our focus.”
                                                       To Leighton’s understanding, the
amount of money spent by women ac-
count for 90 percent of the spending.
“They drive the economy,” he said.
Dale was doing some remodeling work
this week for Lee and Jackie Anderson,
a Fenton Township couple. When asked
which Anderson called him to get the
estimate, he laughed and said, “That’s a
good question. Jackie called me.” Soon
after that initial phone call, Leighton and
both Andersons were discussing a new
                                                    backsplash for the kitchen.
The Andersons built their home in
1988 and have been remodeling it in
                                                    stages, when money is available.
As a longtime subscriber of the Tri-
County Times and an avid newspaper
reader, Jackie noticed Leighton’s ad in the
paper. She then began noticing the Husband
For A Day truck around town and saw it
parked at a few of her neighbors’ homes.
Jackie had a price limit in mind and
when Leighton’s quote fit their budget,
                                                    they decided to hire him.
Leighton and his son have numerous re-
                                                    peat customers. The company experienced

was hanging some pictures on the wall.
                                                       Citing the current economy, Leighton
is seeing an increase in requests for ad-
                                                    ditional bathrooms. The economy has
driven people home, and with more
people living in one house, more bath-
rooms are needed. He said this is most
likely why he’s seeing an increase in
                                                    basement remodeling.
                                                       The Andersons have been considering
                                                    downsizing to a condominium. However,
since the value of their current home has
declined, they are, for now, staying put
                                                    and upgrading what they have.
One might wonder what they will have
Husband For A Day work on, next.

about his plans of starting a maintenance
business. Since he was no longer married,
he thought he’d choose a catchy name for
                                                    his new business.
As a guideline, Vowell says that if he
can do the work, he will do it. If the job is,
something he is not an expert on, he’ll refer
the job to someone else. “I set windows,
put doors in, but no additions,” he said.
Other typical jobs Vowell has done
include light plumbing and electrical work,
trimming trees and painting. He has just
recently begun advertising his services and
hopes to stay busy in his retirement.
