CARMEN-1 is the mission name for an “instrument” composed by ICARE-NG,
3 SODAD units and their interconnection data harness aboard SAC-D satellite.

CARMEN-2 is the mission name for an other ICARE-NG is aboard JASON-2.
MEDET is the mission name for one SODAD aboard ISS.

                                                     CARMEN-1 Objectives

• ICARE-NG is a dedicated instrument to study the influence of space radiation
on advanced components :
  – to measure e-, p+ fluxes respectively in 250keV – 4 MeV and 8 – 120 MeV ranges
  – to measure associated effects on test components (MEX) (dose drifts & single events)

• SODAD detectors are dedicated instruments to study micrometeoroids and
micro orbital debris in space environment.

• Development philosophy is based on a representative EM and a FM at
  instrument level.

• SM of ICARE-NG and the 3 SODAD have been delivered in December 2007.

• Tests between ICARE-NG and SODAD EM have been achieved (to insure
  dialog compatibility).

• 1553 bus validation with the SP simulator provided by CONAE is in progress.
  CARMEN-1 flight Software and 1553 protocol development should be finished
  at the end of August.
• CARMEN-1 1553 Interface Electrical Simulator should be delivered just after.

• SODAD and ICARE-NG Flight hardware have been achieved.

• GSE have been already developed for CARMEN-2 and MEDET functional
  tests.

• SODAD acceptance tests and ground calibration have been achieved and
  successful. For ICARE-NG, these tests should be performed in Sept. 2008.

• Vibration, Thermal cycling qualification tests have been performed on
  CARMEN-2 and MEDET models and are successful (No shocks, no ESD
  have been performed).
• An EMC qualification test of the should be performed in Oct. 2008 on entire
  CARMEN-1 FM (ICARE-NG FM and the 3 SODAD FM with the FM of their
  interconnection data harness) according to SAC-D specification.

• CARMEN-1 FM should be ready to be delivered in Dec. 2008 (Data harness
  FM in Nov.)

• Previous PFMs of ICARE-NG and SODAD have been achieved, integrated
  and fly respectively aboard JASON-2 and ISS with full success.

• ICARE-NG location is ok
     – Inside satellite on a wall near SAC-D upper deck,
     – laying implantation with a window in satellite wall for insuring
       detector FoV.
• SODAD locations are ok
     – Outside satellite, in three different directions of SAC-D
       satellite
     – FOVs are reasonably free excepted for one module but the
       proximity of some antennas could be interesting for the study
       of “particles cloud".

• No specific GSE during SAC-D I&T
     – After integration, It is not possible any more to perform Irradiation and/or dust accelerator tests
       on the CARMEN-1 sensors,
     – Even if we have the possibility to activate an event simulator on ICARE-NG acquisition chains,
       only aliveness or health check tests can be perform on CARMEN-1 during SAC-D I&T.

• I&T constraints :
     – SODAD protection covers have to be removed before flight, during Thermal Vaccum and
       Vibration tests.

• Some analysis have been performed :

     –   ICARE-NG PSA (ICA-0000-AN-01-ERM-1A),
     –   SODAD FMEA (FBM-PA-PC-7-DB-5540-CNS).


• New release of the CARMEN-1 ICD is available

• No RFA is open

• Some points from Technical Interface Meeting are still open
