Introduce yourself. 2. Go over the class outline. EBay is a tool to use to buy and sell items over the Internet. As the Internet is global your market is global. This is the third and last in a series of class on eBay. The first was introduction to eBay, which concentrated on providing an overview and registration. The second was buying on eBay and this presentation concentrates on selling on eBay. I encourage you to ask questions for selling is more complex. 3. Note any upcoming computer classes. 4. Ask if there are any questions. Note It helps with communications if the questions are written down on the white board for all to see. This will remind yourself of the question and is a way to say “Yes, I heard your question.” Note that all questions do not need to be answered right away as they may be dealt with later during the session, in another class, or one on one. Exercise 1. Overview of selling on eBay Handout headphones as we will be using an audio tour of selling on eBay http://ebay.com/ at the homepage look at the toolbar at the top of the page click on ”Sell” then click on “Learn How to Sell” scroll down the page and click “take an audio tour of selling” Created by Enid Costley, with contribution from Deborah Johnson, for the Hibbing Public Library. Registration Need to register to be a seller or you need to upgrade your current registration to sell an item. To register as a seller you need to provide credit card information, and checking account information OR go through and Identification process which cost $5.00 and will take about three days. Going through identification verification will allow you to offer a buy it now option. If you sell mature items you must go through identification verification. 3. Costs involved and payments eBay is a business and it does need to re-coop costs related to hosting a website. There are cost and payments that need to be made. Go to “Sell your item sign in page” Near the top of the page Click on “Learn about selling fees” Go over the different type of fees Insertion Fee – fee for placing a listing Final Value Fee – fee after you sell an item List Upgrade Fee – fee to jazz up listing PayPal Fee – fee for transferring money – personal is free, but will not allow credit cards Payment may be made four different ways – at the bottom of the “Learning about Selling fees” click on “Paying your eBay seller’s fee” Payment to e-Bay of anything over $1.00 is due each month. Payment is either the 15th of the month or the last day of the month. An easy way to pay e-Bay is through an PayPal account. 4. Shipping cost and tips Shipping cost may be paid by the buyer or the seller. If the seller is paying for the shipping, the cost should be included in the price and you will be paying more “final value fee” Post Office – package may not weigh more then 70 pounds and be no bigger then 108 inches (length and girth – all four sides) Created by Enid Costley, with contribution from Deborah Johnson, for the Hibbing Public Library. Oversize packages have extra charge. John’s Shipping will package the item for you. Larger packages – UPS has a new trucker service – call for a quote Fed Ex – has a drop off box in Howard court for small items. Fed ex offers trucking service. If you including shipping cost be clear – shipping over seas, shipping to Alaska or Hawaii. 5. EBay selling checklist overview Go to the “Sell your item sign in page near the top of the page click on “Seller’s check list” Categories Do some looking as a buyer – can you find a similar item. How is it described? What are the categories used? Make sure the item is correctly identified and the correct name and spelling are used. Describing item Use Front Page to create a description. Click on the HTML code and copy, paste the item to the description field. If you do not know how to use a word processing program I would recommend taking a class on word processing. The Library offers two classes Working withWord One and Working With Word Two. Open up in the front page. Type in the phrase - show HTML code Make it bold – show HTML code Change the color – a dark contrasting color – show HTML code Drop down a line. – show HTML code Show how to copy it on to a disc – show HTML code Adding a Photo Photo need to be saved as a JPEG file. Use a digital camera to take a picture. Use a plain color fabric as a back drop. Select a fabric which will make the item look good (gray, light brown, light green.) With your camera you should receive a photo editor. Edit your picture by cropping it. And save it to your own computer hard drive. Jim Griffith, author of The Official e-Bay Bible, suggests taking several pictures from several angles. Including close up pictures. Griffith also recommends keeping pictures for three months. Pricing The Hibbing Public Library has several books on price guide. You may want to have the item apprised. Look also at similar items and what they sell for. Feedback http://pages.ebay.com/help/feedback/feedback.html Feed back is based on a system of points (1 point for a positive feedback, 0 for a neutral feedback and -1 for a negative feedback.) Stars are placed by seller information to highlight sellers with at least 10 points from feedback. 7. Trading Assistance Go to http://contact.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?GetTAHubPage or go to site map and click on trading assistance A trading assistance, for a fee, will help you sell and item. Search for trading assistance by typing in zip code – zero found Search for trading assistance by area code – located several. Any one thinking of beginning a business – might consider taking course on small business through the Northeast Entrepreneur Fund information is found at http://www.entrepreneurfund.org/ 8. Taxes I am not a tax expert. I do not feel comfortable about giving tax advice. You can get advice from a tax expert, look at www.irs.gov. for federal tax information and go to www.taxes.state.mn.us for information. 9. Selling on other auction sites There are several other auction sites available to sell on. Some of these do not get the sales that eBay does, but they are worth trying out. There is less competition on these sites. See the book “How to Sell On eBay” page 43 for more information. http://auctions.shopping.yahoo.com/ http://www.amazon.com/auctions Evaluation Please complete an evaluation before leaving Created by Enid Costley, with contribution from Deborah Johnson, for the Hibbing Public Library.
