Please consider running the enclosed public service announcement to alert potential
volunteers that local fire and EMS departments need their help. The 1-800-FIRE-LINE
campaign was created as a simple tool to assist with the challenges of retention and
recruitment. 1-800-FIRE-LINE is a national toll-free telephone number anyone can call to
find out about both emergency and non-emergency volunteer opportunities with their
local fire/EMS department.


Firefighters and EMS personnel are vital to the protection of our nation, our communities
and our citizens. In the wake of emergencies and disasters such as 9/11, Hurricane
Katrina, and others, it becomes increasingly evident how much we depend on the fire
and emergency services. A majority of these firefighters - 72% - are volunteers. Yet even
while call volumes continue to increase, the number of volunteer firefighters in the U.S.
has dropped by 8% since 1985.


Promoting 1-800-FIRE-LINE will help increase the number of people who contribute to
protecting our communities, both as first responders and as non-emergency volunteers
whose work enables firefighters and emergency medical personnel to focus on
emergency response.
