   New Board Members for Internet Security
            Company Hi/fn, Inc.

    LOS GATOS, Calif., March 4, 1999 -- Network security specialist
Hi/fn, Inc., (Nasdaq: HIFN) recently appointed three new members to its board
of directors: Taher Elgamal, Ph.D., Robert W. Johnson, Ph.D., and
Albert E. Sisto.
    Dr. Elgamal, formerly Chief Scientist of Netscape Communications Corp., is
the founder of Securify, a Kroll-O'Gara company that assesses the security
efforts of companies on the Internet. While at Netscape he pioneered Internet
security technologies such as SSL (Secure Socket Layer), the standard for web
security. He also served as Director of Engineering at RSA Data Security,
Inc., where he produced the industry standard RSA cryptographic toolkits.
Dr. Elgamal received his Ph.D. from Stanford University.
    Robert Johnson is a private investor and a former principal and partner of
Southern California Ventures, a private venture capital firm. He is currently
on the board of directors of high-tech public companies Stac Software, Inc.,
and ViaStat, Inc. Mr. Johnson holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from
Stanford University and Harvard University.
    Albert Sisto is Chief Operating Officer at RSA Data Security, a provider
of widely used encryption technology and a subsidiary of Security Dynamics.
He previously held the position of Chairman, President and CEO of Documagix, a
developer of document imaging software. Mr. Sisto is a director with publicly
traded Jetfax, Inc., Insignia Solutions plc and Tekgraf, Inc. He is also on
the board of nCipher and Trintech Group Ltd. Mr. Sisto holds a B.E. degree
from the Stevens Institute of Technology.
